Went to see it today... I absolutely hated the main chick characters. At the beginning they had me doing nothing but face palming and shaking my head. The family in front of me actually left, too. But then, as Milincoln said, James Franco comes in and redeems it. I didn't give one crap about the girls at all, but I was very intrigued by Franco's character as well as the stuff with Gucci Mane. Problem is, that stuff doesn't even get introduced until what I felt was a little past half way into the movie. The first half was 3 annoying girls and selena gomez (she's the brunette chick, right?) yelling about spring break... The whole movie felt..... for lack of a better term.... undercooked. It wasnt really what I consider an action film, far from a kids film, almost girls gone wild, half after school special, and other mixings. It just failed to commit to any one specific genre, i felt. Im sure It'll get stuck in the action section of redbox but what action? The last scene was the most eventfull one and even that failed to satisfy. Like lighting a big fire work, watching sparkles, and hearing a pop..... you think to yourself..... wait was that it? Then you wait hopeing something else will happen but in the movie's case nothing happens, we get credits. It would love to see a prequel with only Gucchi Mane and Franco. They were the best part of the movie and we got to see them on screen for a small amount of time. It will prob never happen but I loved seeing Franco in that type of role/look. |

I loved it! It's a satirical hedonistic dream, that's the best way to sum it up. It's not about depth in characters, it's about an escape.

And the problem that everyone and anyone is obsessed with the 'escape' that was presented. Animalistic and barbaric at times, should this be what it's about for these four girls? Or should they be way more excited for something more worthwhile? I kind of took away from the fact that they seem to have the most fun with each other just the four of them on the beach and that in a sense is all they needed. |

Saw it earlier. Two of the people I was with said it was the worst film they had ever seen.
As for myself, I liked it. It's morals are to be questioned (it went from four girls hedonistic vacation, to a ludicrous gangster style ordeal), the girls characters were truly appalling (Gomez's Faith was the only one that got some form of development) and the ending was pretty rubbish. However I think this would certainly benefit from repeated viewings, as the good bits were really good. And it's neon tinted cinematography is to be admired.
As for James Franco; best performance of the year. LOOK AT ALL MA SHIT!

i find that harmony dude's works to be really pretentious and uses art to just sell shock stimulation (ie sex, violence, taboos). perfect example is vanessa hudgens in this movie - she's supposed to be the wildest of the group, a girl completely disillusioned in teenage culture pumped up by sex to the point where she just can't help crawling all over her friends and relating anything to sex - when it's not about sex, she's pretending to shoot things. it's like, okay dude, i get that america's teens (and largely young women) are oversexed and are pretty disenchanted with reality in their quest for eternal orgies, but at some point it becomes just exploiting this actress for the sake of taboo sex appeal. oh well, lots of money for some therapist.
