Just read an article at PW Torch by Michael Moore (PW Torch Collectables Specialist) about which wrestlers have been produced the most by Mattel.
Here's some highlights from the column:
- Mattel has made at least 83 Cena figures since they started producing the WWE line in 2010. This count only includes basic, Elite, and Flex Force. It does not include Rumblers or Brawlin' Buddies.
- If you wanted to collect all of them it works out to buying more than two Cena figures a month, or about 25 Cena figures each year.
- 75 of the 83 Cena figures are indistinguishable from one another.
- Rey Mysterio comes in second with 67 known figures to date.
- Third is Randy Orton with 43 figures.
- Fourth is HHH with 36 figures.
- Fifth is CM Punk with 31 figures.
- Sixth is Undertaker with 29 figures.

83 figures, divided by 39 Months is about 2 Cena figures a year, plus an extra 5. If this list includes Basic, Elite and Flex Force AND Basics/2Packs fall under the same category, I would say that isn't too bad really.
EDIT: Not to mention some of the exclusive sets he was in (Superstar Matchups, Rumble Heritage 6Pack, etc.)
Plus, with Rey in second with 67, we cannot forget that 6 of those came in a TRU exclusive 6Pack.

Holy smokes! That is quite unnecessary by Mattel in my opinion. So many indistinguishable figs and repaints that couldve given us the outfits and accessories that we want yet the "budget" does not let them. Eliminate 5 or 10 repaints from basics and elites and it creates extra money for better gear and outfits and colors.

36 Triple H figures? Come on Mattel it should be more than that.

That can't be right:
- 75 of the 83 Cena figures are indistinguishable from one another.

He's the face of WWE if you like it or not.
WWE shoves Cena down our throats so I expect Mattel to do the same.

That can't be right: - 75 of the 83 Cena figures are indistinguishable from one another. I agree. Indistinguishable means you can't tell the difference between them, so I doubt that is true.

Maybe it's 75 of the 83 are unique. That sounds right. They didn't start with the straight re-releases of Cena until the Red figures. But even that number seems wrong. Everything from Blue, Orange, and Purple was unique, as well as the one offs like Chain Gang Soldier, John Deere Green, Hustle Loyalty Respect, etc. The jhorts, shoes, or scans were always different.
EDIT: I'm a little bit drunk. I'll figure it out in the morning, my own post seems off. Good night.

"75 of the 83 Cena figures are indistinguishable from one another" means 75 of them are the same, or different?

I've got a decent amount of Cena....nowhere near 85. I think he's wrong on the Punks though
I've got 29 different ones. If you count a 1/1000 and a regular Basic 2 the same that would be 30 same with the Flex force series 1 regular and version with the belt, brings it to 31 and going on that route there'd actually be 34 Punks total-

"75 of the 83 Cena figures are indistinguishable from one another" means 75 of them are the same, or different? Means the same. I would question that #. A lot of Cena's figs are nearly identical to one another, but Mattel does a pretty good job of changing up the shoes or head-sculpts to make them a little different. Usually. I have noticed that the recent green banded basics are all pretty much the same figure just being re-released in different ways.

Eliminate 5 or 10 repaints from basics and elites and it creates extra money for better gear and outfits and colors. I don't think you understand how money works. Using repaints and rereleases is cheaper and thus frees up money in a series to do newer sculpts and designs on other figures. Giving Cena a new head and body every time would take away money that could be used on a new Big Show or CM Punk head, or a Roman Reigns torso, for example.

I compiled a list a while back that didn't include Flexforce, or live event exclusives, just mass-market releases, and it was 66 figures. I can believe that that many flexforce Cenas came out. What I don't buy, even if you flip the numbers, is the indistinguishable part. No way are 75 indistinguishable. Conversely, there are more than 8 that are straight re-releases. Remember that most store exclusive rings include a figure that is simply a re-issue, as are the K-mart 3 packs. Starting with Red, they began to cut back costs, by re-releasing Cena with no deco changes. From red, to Camo, through green, and undoubtedly with the 10 years strong attire they have heaped re-issue after re-issue upon us. Hell, to give you one example, the RAH Camo gear. In basic form, despite having 5 (6 if you count the revision of 20 where they swapped him for B18 attire) releases, there were only 2 attires. And the Green one with solid black shoes, and dark blue jhorts was done 7 or 8 times already. I found the list I compiled after much searching. Since I made it, they released Basic 29 and a TRU exclusive Ring with yet another re-issue of the green themed attire, as well as announcing Elite 23. would love to know if the 67 Rey figures are all in different attires. In the past year, he's had some re-releases. Blue & white Rey was in a 2-pack with Miz and Best of 2012 while his red and white gear came out in a 2-pack, as a FlexForce figure and in the Walmart 6 figure boxset.
