Heres my first shot at making a custom ring. Work was rushed, eyeballed, and only used hand tools to assemble. There is not a straight or level line on the thing but it sits level on the floor. This is a few ideas I've had over the years, finally tried them out, was mainly trying to make sure all this was going to work. I hate the box bottom style rings where you cant use the underneith, I also hate heavy wood as the mat. I used 1x1's cut like you would to make a icture frame. Theres no support in the middle at all. The mat I used the Cardboard foam sheets from wal-mart made for presentations and bulletin boards. This makes it springy and give a little but and it has a very good sound with cloth over it if you leave most of the board loose. It is pretty durable when cut in a small size like this, you'd have to step in the ring or Throw a figure down with full standing force to get it to fail. I didnt make a canvas or skirt for this as Im just gonna recycle it, The turn buckle pads were an experiment, I plan to make better ones and cover with cloth. Posts are straight as pat patterson. I'm trying to work out a way that they can be removed for storage or possibly shipping, but still be rigid and not bend in from the ropes. Gonna look at the hardware store on payday and see if I can come up with a way to make metal ones. This is an 18"x18" ring, 24X24 is too big for me, I will probably do the final 20x20. They make a type of rubber dipper that is used to put rubber handles on things, I want to coat the posts in the stuff so they wont damage figures and have a soft surface to them. This thing is surprisingly light, it weighs a little bit more than the jakks hardcore ring fully assembled. as for the ropes, it's a secret.

What type if metallic piece did you use to attach the posts to the ring? The ropes are great by the way! I love seeing what other people come up with.

Awesome ring! I know it's a prototype but it's got a real "Indy" feel to it. It would be perfect for several Pic Feds that already post on the site. Can't wait to see the next one you do.
Also, how many dogs do you have?! I count 5 from the pic alone. lol

What type if metallic piece did you use to attach the posts to the ring? The ropes are great by the way! I love seeing what other people come up with. they are 1" dowels and the metal piece is a 3/4" bracket that is made for attacking pipe to a frame to run electrical wire through. I had to bend them to get it ti work right, they would be perfect if I shaved the ouside corners down a little so the dowel will sit flush and not be barely off to one side. The frame is held together on the inside by elbow brackets in the corners. Awesome ring! I know it's a prototype but it's got a real "Indy" feel to it. If you ever wonder what that would look like, its these, lol.

that looks amazing, any problems with the posts bending in as of yet? if so maybe some chain or something underneath like a real ring uses. I like it, any plans for a 6 sider?

Thanks a lot man. that looks amazing, any problems with the posts bending in as of yet? if so maybe some chain or something underneath like a real ring uses. I like it, any plans for a 6 sider? They are holding pretty well, not as well as I would like. The chain idea would work, either that or another brace in the corner. You just cant drill into wood too many times in such a small area or it splits. The chain idea may work a lot better. 6 sided ring I can take or leave. but if someone wanted to buy one I'd definately make it for them. i like what you did with the turnbuckle pads!!! really brings the ring together!! makes me want to build another ring!! Thanks, I already have a way to cover them AND make them removable. Have to wait and see Right now they are just tied down with thread.

Heres some more stuff I've done, found this rubber mat stuff Im going to cut to make the ring mats. looks good, grips to floor, not oily or greasy. I've learned what to do and what not to do on this thing so the next one is gonna turn out way better. If I do anything else to this one it will just be lowering the top rope and retightening the rest of the ropes. The posts have stayed where I put them, I just need to get a better way to secure them, I'd like to make them removeable. These pads can be removed, didn't add covering to these. A peek underneath Frame and floor from underneath Action shot! All and all I like how this turned out. Im gonna make the next one a little bit bigger. This reminds me of the wcw ring, just the top rope is too tall instead of too short xD
