For Ultimate X, square wooden dowels that you can buy at hardware or craft stores work best, but just make sure the dowel you buy is at least 1/2 inch thick. That way they don't bend inwards because of the weight of the figures hanging off the ropes. Jakks ring ropes work awesome for Ultimate X matches because of the springyness of them. Just make sure they're tight enough like becca said. You can attach the dowels to your ringposts with cable ties that you can buy by the dozens for cheap at the dollar store. You can drill a hole at the top of the dowel on the side facing the ring to attach a small screw eye. That way you'll have somewhere to tie the Jakks ropes instead of just tying them around the post. They're available at any hardware store. Here's a diagram I made for someone else a couple of months ago. And here's a pic of my UX with ring ropes.
