My friends are telling me that I should start reading comics, I am thinking of starting with New 52 Justice League but I don't know where a good place to start would be, any suggestions?

Well what comic character are you interested in? If you could pick a comic hero then I might be able to point you in the right direction.

Justice League is good. Personally I'm a fan of the JLI Max Lord running things days. There are a number of collected editions.

If I may, maybe you should go back and read some of the stuff that is highly regarded as being awesome. Just to see if you even like reading comics. Maybe check out Batman Hush, Long Halloween and Dark Victory. Punisher Born, Welcome Back Frank, and In the Beginning. If Superman is your thing then I recommend The Death of Superman, Red Son, and Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow. As has been mentioned, it's all relative to what you like, and what characters appeal to you. Maybe you would be more into stuff like Watchmen, V for Vendetta, Sandman and Preacher, all stuff I love passionately but aren't traditional "superhero" books. You have the luxury of being able to start from scratch without any preconceived ideas of what comics are supposed to be about, take advantage of it.

I wouldn't start with reading Supergirl due to all of the rewrites she's gone through.

If you want to read Justice League then track down the trade paper back volume one of Justice League collecting the first 6 or so issues. If you like it buy volume 2 and then just track down the back issues to the current or wait for volume 3 and so on.

I've got a complete list of recommended reading order for both Batman and the Green Lantern if you're interested. Just find what you like and stick with it man. Even the New 52 stuff is worth a read. Batman The Court of the Owls is a fantastic read, and one of the best things to come out of the New 52.

Preacher was the first time I really read comics (apart from when I was around six years old). Still haven't found anything to match it in the last twelve years.

Y:the Last Man is one of my absolute favorites
If you're looking for more super hero oriented books, I recommend Batman: the Long Halloween DC's New Frontier DC's Kingdom Come Marvels

The old DC Vertigo Sandman is a must read, as is Miracleman. I can't brag on these two stories enough. Marvel is set to reboot in a few months, so nothing current with them matters....which is ok, since it pretty much sucks. The DC New 52 Batman is awesome, as is the current run of Superman.

Marvel's become such a convoluted mess that it's all ending soon. So...starting anything with them for the next few months is pointless. I do agree about Deadpool tho...but then again, continuity doesn't matter so much with him.

I would recommend Batman Hush to a first time reader as well. If you enjoyed Guardians of the Galaxy, Annihilation was good. I don't read much current stuff, but New 52 Justice League bored me to tears. It may be much better now, I don't know. I liked Justice League Dark much better.

most of the big publishers have a lot of their books first issues in special edition reprints for $1 each. I know Marvel, DC, and Image have these. good way to try a lot of different books for a low price.
