If anybody at Mattel reads this and feels like answering, I'm just curious how the color scheme for each figure is decided upon, and who makes that call?
Because it just seems to me like there are a lot of recurring color issues that shouldn't be happening. My #1 concern is with the sheer number of figures that are given JET BLACK hair. For example, CM Punk, Wade Barrett, Cody Rhodes, Santino Marella...these men all have some shade of brown hair in real life. Yet their hair and facial hair is always jet black.
And even the most recent AJ Lee figure (Basic 30) was given JET BLACK hair. Basic 24 AJ and Elite 21 AJ were both given the correct brown hair....yet Basic 30 AJ was given jet black hair?
Also....the Sheamus hair color issue. There was a period of time back in like late 2010 or early 2011 where he WAS in fact dying his hair with that horrible ketchup red hair dye that almost looked like a maroon color.....but for the last year and a half, his hair has been back to his natural hair color like his Elite 8 figure had.
So yeah, I'm just curious how the colors are decided upon. It just seems like there is an increasingly absurd amount of black continuing to incorrectly show up on these figures. And if the answer is that black is cheaper than brown, I'll totally understand that....I'm just wondering how Mattel can look at guys who have brown hair in real life and decide to give them the darkest shade of black hair on their figures.
Thanks.

Aj's hair is more black than brown these days. I think they made the right call. It would be great if they could get some dark brown 'highlights' in there, but we all know Mattel struggles with that sort of thing. Hair is usually one color.

I was going to point out the same thing with AJ's hair. It is more black than brown these days so MDT nailed it.

Alright, that explains AJ Lee, but what about CM Punk? Dark brown is what he should have...same for Rhodes, Barrett, etc...

Dark brown/black is a bit like potayto, potarto. They look similar and, particularly with Basics, they're aimed at kids who won't stop to question the shades of paint used.

They've used a dark plastic that wasn't jet black that seems appropriate for AJ. (See the Bella Twins below.) To the naked eye, it even had a little bit of a brown tint to it. (Pic: Hulkamania 4 Life) I don't get why Sheamus still has dark hair like during the King Sheamus run. I could understand the masked Cody Rhodes Elite having black hair because at that time his hair did have a fuller, darker appearance. A year later, his Elite based on WM28 should've had brown hair to reflect his neater haircut. (Even the video games picked up on that detail.) Hopefully, the Best Of 2013 Elite Wade Barrett coming up won't have a black mustache and beard. That would just be sad.

The jet black color didn't bother me on Punk when he was slicking back his hair, though his beard should have been brown. But now with his shorter/buzz cut the jet black is all wrong. And the new Basic 29 Punk is a perfect example of a good head ruined by wrong hair color. Surprised no one has mention Mattel constantly getting HBK's hair wrong. His Elite 19 would have been perfect had the hair not been so dark. Dark brown/black is a bit like potayto, potarto. They look similar and, particularly with Basics, they're aimed at kids who won't stop to question the shades of paint used. But Elite heads are generally painted the exact same as Basics. I collect both and rarely see a difference.

i have a feeling that out of all the people assigned to the wwe mattel figure line, prolly two people are actually "intune" with wwe, meaning that they are/have been wrestling fans. the rest are prolly just generic designers who base figure designs off of generic promo pictures they get emailed to them. the real fans working with mattel probably get their ideas overridden by these other designers and thats why we got hodgepodge lines sometimes.
if there were more people in tune with the wwe product, people who were wrestling fans/collectors like us, we wouldnt have the recurring "knee pad" issues or the legends line issues we had, or the color issues we had; they would KNOW.

Forget about hair colors, I wanna know who decides attire colors and why Yankees or Hart tribute Punk wasn't made yet. I remember seeing MDT say that they didn't like Yankees so they're not making that attire, that's just stupid IMO

Also didn't punk only wear that attire once at NOC 2012? Same goes for Bret Hart one SS 2012. Mattel said there not going to make attire's he seldomly wears.

^^Elite 24's got Trish, Rey, Ryback, The Miz, Barrett and Ziggler. ^Black hair for that version of Barrett was somewhat passable since he did sport that slicked back, wet look prior to his injury. Nowadays, it's clear that Barrett needs brown hair, but I guess it depends on whatever reference material they work from.

on SmackDown AJ's hair looked black.
I'm nervous about Seth Rollins hair (or kaitlyns for that matter).
Since it has to be molded in 1 color....then painted

About AJ, let's say her figure was based off of 6 months ago - November Vickie (who clearly has black hair) next to AJ:
How about 5 months ago in December?
What if it was 3 months ago in late January?
Still not black.
