One of the greatest memories I have while collecting as a kid is from around Christmas time when RA24 was first starting to hit. Literally everyone was after that first Great Khali figure. We had just moved out to the area and the cost of living was much higher than where we were originally from. Mall shopping with friends of the family and walk into KB and there was only one Khali left. We were hardly making it by with rent and all other expenses so buying a figure was sort of a rarity. I begged for the $10 I needed for that figure, my mother really didn't have the money so our family friend who we were with was generous enough to give me the money to buy it. That was the only figure I got for Christmas that year, and this was at the peak of me collecting. I wanted literally every figure that came out. But that year, I was so happy to have that Khali figure to add to my collection. I still have it to this day.

I was over on the Jakks board earlier and saw where this topic was moved here. And that's funny because so far all anyone has talked about is Jakks figures and (myself included) other non-wrestling toys and games. And that's all that can be discussed since Mattel didn't make wrestling figures when KB toys existed, so why did this get moved again?

To bring myself back to topic, if TRU has the highest prices now ($12.99 basics) how much do you think KB would be? $14.99, or would they only be $12.99 as well since standard seems to be $9.99-$10.99? Again, while KB had the worst prices on brand new items they also had a ton of stock. Would they still with the way the economy has gone? Because when I was much younger I can remember when TRU was also as amazing. In fact, with the majority of places that I went, the problem was there being too much good stuff. The ease of finding things made it easy on my parents. Imagine with how dry retail gets at most stores and how clueless most parents are about toys, what it must be like to be a kid whose parents can't find the toys they want. Target has always sucked, though, now they just suck even more. It used to be infrequent purchases. Now it seems like between the 2 Targets in town that I pick up maybe 10 figures from them in an entire year.

I loved that place. I used to buy there all the time, 5 mins away from home.

I always went to TRU as a kid, only one KB where I lived and it was about 30-40min away from my house so I never went unless I was at the mall. Wish it would come back now that I can drive though.

I guess i am in the minority here... i didnt hate the place... but i always felt that was where toys went to die...
the local one got new stock... but maybe once a month.. and it was very little.. over half the store was clearance items.. and the prices were horrible... the last thing i remember buying from them.. leader class megatron from the first transformers movie.. was sold out everywhere else, and they held it for me straight off the truck... but instead of the $40 like everywhere else.. it was $55

We need another mass retail chain toy store to compete with Toys R Us that way Toys R Us starts stepping up their game. Because right now they have the market cornered in toy stores and cant pretty much charge and stock whatever and whenever. Sucks big time in my opinion.

Did anyone else have a K-B Toy Works in their town? It was kind of like a K-B clearance store.
Virginia Beach had one and they had a lot of older stuff for cheap. I remember getting a WCW Powerslam Kanyon figure for under $5 there.

I remember going to a KB Toys in the Mall of America and my grandma buying me just about every wrestling figure they had just because she was awesome. It was around the time Toybiz came out with the "T-shirts and Tatooes" WCW set. I remember getting Jeff Jarrett and the Sting evolution boxed set that day. If I remember correctly, my grandma bought me 24 new figures that day because they had a buy 2 get 1 for a penny sale or something like that. It was crazy.

They also had a WWE autograph signing there, it was Kane.... it was a awesome day...

I miss Kay bees from the 90s and the 3/$9 bin especially. But yeah, I went there pretty often until they closed. Though with their higher prices toward the end, I wasn't buying from them as much.

I went to K-B Toys (it was Toy Works here) at least once a week. every Thursday was truck day,so every Friday they would have the new stuff out. one of my fondest memories was going there and finding the new BCA series that had the 1st Kane figure back in 1998,and also finding Series 2 of Ripped and Ruthless that same day, also with a brand new Kane figure! I would easily drop (after bills) full paychecks there. and like the OP said, they never seemed to have empty pegs.

The economy being on the downturn was the main reason they went out of business in the first place, so that's a moot point. I loved KB and I worked there for about 2 1/2 years as an assistant manager. They paid us like crap though. I only made $9.00/hr. in a management position so I had to move on. I left there probably 2-3 years before they went out of business. As far as the pegs always being full, they weren't allowed to have empty pegs or empty spaces. If there was an empty space we would move stuff around and fill in the spots. That's why they put price tags on the items themselves instead of on the shelves, to make it easier to move stuff around.

If there was an empty space we would move stuff around and fill in the spots. That's why they put price tags on the items themselves instead of on the shelves, to make it easier to move stuff around. I guess what I meant, was if they had survived the economic downturn, the result would have been more modest orders. It seems like even at Christmas time, all the stores that aren't Wal-mart are modestly ordering. Taking guaranteed sales on a limited quantity over less predictable sales on huge orders. I personally hate how few figures I buy at Target because of how much of the year is spent without stock. I remember the Christmas of 2011. I had a Target on the way home from work and checked it every night I worked because I kept thinking, "This is Christmas, the one time of year that toys actually sell." I was wrong for having that logic. They got a case of BO2011 basics in November and about 3 weeks before Christmas had the BO2011 Elites, again just one case. I stared at completely empty pegs every day I went in. Even the Flexforce was gone. As a store, it looks terrible to have gaping holes with no product. And TRU, the store that specializes in toys no less, had very minimal stock this year and it was all old. When I walked over to the TMNT section, there were tumbleweeds the entire month of December. They didn't simply get the stuff on truck days and sell out, they just never had it. They peeled the price stickers off of the pegs so that they could put placeholders such as TMNT earbuds in their place. They had something like 10 pegs for TMNT action figures with one set of earbuds on each peg.
