So i've been on wfigs past few days and saw a members (name escapes me) thread about a custom hog pen and RAW arena he built, anyway in the RAW entrance pics he had Austin attacked by Flair and talked how it was rumoured that Ric Flair was meant to be coming over and be the corporate champion up against Austin.
Any truth/story behind that? I thought it was pretty interesting.

Never heard that, HHH was pontentially set for it in Fall 98 but due to his knee injury, The Rock filled that spot instead.

I highly doubt they were going to make a 49 year old man (that wasn't Vince McMahon) their world champion when they had young guys like Rock and Triple H moving up the card at that time.

Flair was hardly even wrestling when he first came to the WWE in 2001. There was no way he was gonna be champion. I think the initial idea was to do McMahon vs. Austin type thing with Flair vs. Austin. It didn't click the same though.

I don't think he was.
I think this would have been HHHs slot if he hadn't been injured in Autumn 98.he was at the very least in the running.

I think what is being referenced here goes back to 1998.... when Flair was "fired" from WCW for no-showing a Thunder taping to go to one of Reid's amateur wrestling tournaments.... and I believe he was still contracted to WCW but was exploring the idea of getting his release and joining WWE. I believe this was around the same time The Rock was the WWE Champion - so it's possible that Ric Flair could have come to WWE during this time (had he been granted his release) and been a focal point of WWE storylines. Instead, Flair ironed things out with WCW and came back in September 1998 - with the 4 Horsemen reboot (Benoit, Malenko, McMichael, Dillon & Arn Anderson). |

Not a chance. Flair has even gone on record as saying that he was so emotionally and mentally beat down (mostly by the politics) that he actually considered retiring. Its one reason he praises McMahon/Triple H & HBK so much because they basically made him feel like he was dirt (like Bischoff treated him) to being a living legend that he truly is.

Hey that was me! In the Torch and on other sites Scoops for instance Flair had sued WCW and vice Versa. This was in the beginning of 1998 and it was stated that the whole corporate champion thing was going to be Flair. Mankind put on the tie and shirt to hold onto it for a couple of months until Flair could debut but it fell through. I was voraciously reading Lords of pain.net and all the wrestling websites back then as I do today. Believe me it was talked about.

IMO theres no doubt that Flairs troubles with WCW were talked about within WWF....they would have been foolish not to consider depriving WCW of Flair.

Im sorry but you don't know that for sure.HBK was in HHHs corner big time in 98 and in Vinces ear. HHH being on the shelf for fall 98 made Vinces choice a lot easier-that much we do know but we don't know HHH was never in the running. |

Well I think it was obvious HHH was in the running. Just look at how well Rock and he did during Austin's neck injury from Nov 99 - mid 2000.

IMO he would have flopped hard. He didn't have his "Game" gimmick yet and still had his mid-carder look. He was still known as the goofy leader of DX and simply wasn't ready for the top heel spot. Rocky was getting huge in '98, even after he lost the IC Title to HHH. He was getting huge face pops during the fall of '98 and his heel turn worked great. |

100% agreed man.
HHH needed those few months AFTER his heel turn in 99 at WM15 to mature into that role.even at that....it didn't really take til Foley put him over back to back in 2000.
if he had turned heel as DX HHH straight into Champion?doubt that would have worked.....Rock was already at that level-he was more credible.
