I'd have to say easily 1997 that was a great year for wrestling in general. yes. WCW was on fire.the brand-name of the nWo fueled everything. you had great Cruiserweight matches.the beginning emergence of some stars who would be big in WCW (or elsewhere). an "anything goes" rebellious vibe to Nitro. and lurking behind all this, like a coming storm, was Sting. WWF actually had better matches, and at least on par storylines, with WCW. they finally started to build THEIR stars for the future (Rock,Austin,Triple H,Kane,Foley NAO) while still retaining the brand value of guys like HBK,Bret Hart,LOD,and the Undertaker. It was just that WCW was too red hot to stop.but the beginning of the WWF's rise to the top was in 1997. ECW was arguably at it's zenith. becoming (officially) the 3rd biggest promotion in the U.S., finally starting PPV events, selling out everywhere, merchandise sales were good. and did i mention the wrestlers were giving their all,the storylines were great, and the product reached the right balance of great wrestling and compelling characters to go along with the extreme hardcore action? pro wrestling,I don't think, will ever see another point like this.the 3 biggest promotions giving 100% every week to try and top each other.

97. The match didn't pan out but that Sting story was probably the pinnacle of anything WCW did during the MNW years. I think a lot of it carried over into 1998 though, which I thought was a spectacular year for WCW. It may have been "the beginning of the end" but it didn't feel like it at the time. Goldberg vs Hogan on Nitro felt like the biggest free TV match I'd ever seen in my life. WCW never felt like it was on a downward spiral for me until the Russo run, which was what made so many people tune out. It's not a coincidence that the product got magically good again in the fall of 2000 imo.
