Not saying it did any damage to him or anything like that, and I even like the poka dots. It's just here is a wrestler who held almost every title the NWA has ever had to offer. Yet (I know it was a short run), nothing in the WWF. I know when they brought in Flair it was a huge win on the WWF's part. But to bring Dusty in and never give him a push towards any sort of title?? I just think that was a misuse on Vince's part. You're confusing wrestling in those days with wrestling now, where everyone near the top gets a million title shots. In those days, they didn't. You'd only see two or three title defences a year on televised events. Feuds lasted a long time. It wasn't like now where you'd get the champion in twelve or thirteen PPV title matches a year as well as TV every week. Plus, the WWF had a babyface champion for pretty much all of Dusty's run there, except the very end of it when Slaughter beat Warrior at Rumble '91, which was Dusty's last PPV. Hogan vs Warrior was the big face vs face match in Dusty's run, they weren't going to water that down by having a different face vs face title feud right before or after it.

Sure, they gave him goofy yellow polka dots. But dammit, they gave him one of the greatest themes in wrestling history.

On the McMahon DVD Dusty talks about how he stormed into Vince's office and said he'd had enough of the polka dots and that they were terrible. He then said that Vince spent 20 mins convincing him that only The American Dream could pull it off because he was that good, and Dusty walked out ready to keep going with the polka dots, and he ended up getting over in them.

It wasn't the polka dots that were the problem - it was the humiliating "Americana" sketches, like this one, that were intended to bury Big Dust where he was selling meat, cleaning toilets, etc.... I, for one, loved Dusty Rhodes when he was in WWF.... it was great when he took the Big Bossman's billy club and hat.... just a fun time in wrestling..... I saw the polka dots on display a few weeks ago at Pro Wrestling World! Here they are....
