As alot of you know, ppv's exceeded 3 hours from 1985-1992 and needed to be edit for their vhs release.
Can anyone name some of these edits for me? Like point some of them out?
I'm looking to order some UK tagged classics which are from these coliseum masters and i'd like to know whats cut?
Specificaly the 1989-1990 Royal Rumbles!

it's not so much that they NEEDED to be edited, it's that WWF were looking to budget. LP film was very expensive then, where as SP tapes were much cheaper to produce. Typically, they'd cut certain undercard matches out completely or edit them for time. And by 1990, they were pretty much done with that. Harley Race vs. Haku from Royal Rumble 89 didn't make the cut on tape, and the two singles mid card matches on Survivor Series 88 were both HEAVILY edited. The tags match was briefly edited but not much taken out.
If you're wanting uncut, get the anthology releases. The F will be dropped and certain theme songs changed, but every match is 100% complete

Wrestlemania 12 VHS release did not include the tag team championship match.

I'm not sure about the UK, but in the States, the Coliseum releases were 3 hours with some ppvs coming on two cassettes to accommodate the entire event.

The only PPV I know that was released on two VHS tapes was WrestleMania IV. I can assure you the 1987 & 1988 Survivor Series, WrestleMania VI & VII were heavily edited. |

A few edits that comes to mind is Gene Okerlund interviewing the Colossal Connection was cut from the Coliseum Video release. I haven't viewed y copy in a long time so I can't say what was cut. As for WrestleMania VII, Hacksaw Jim Duggan's entrance at the beginning was edited out. White stuff was edited out, there were some exclusives such as this: |

Wrestlemania 12 VHS release did not include the tag team championship match. That's because it was on the Free For All(preshow) and not the actual ppv event. There were some Coliseum ppv tapes back then that did include the preshow matches, but they were usually the 2 hour IYH tapes probably just to add some content to the tape. As far as WM 6 and 7 go I know some matches were edited down for time such as the tag title and retirement matches on 7. Also pretty sure the instant replay debate from 7 was dropped as well. Don't know a lot about 6. |

The worst offender goes to the Coliseum video version of SummerSlam '88. The opening match between the Bulldogs and the Rougeaus was chopped down to about 6-7 minutes when the match went to a time limit draw. The actual runtime of SummerSlam '88 is about 2 hours 50 minutes. I was able to track down a copy of the live airing from a source and compared it to the Coliseum Video/Tagged Classics and the Anthology versions.
Even on the Anthology sets, the events were edited for time. The most complete versions you'll see is acquiring the live airings of these PPV's. I can assure you Lord Gaylord Hansky, the instant replay debate was edited out from Anthology/CHV versions of WrestleMania VII. However, I believe it was kept intact on the Legacy box set version of WrestleMania VII.
I believe the Pipers Pit segment from WrestleMania V was never shown in its entirely on home video. The Anthology version had portions that were edited out and was cut completely from the Legacy release. I am not too sure about the CHV/TC version.

The Tagged Classics do not contain the WWE bug (the term for a watermark on television) on events that predates the 1993 Survivor Series. I was able to source out material from various means to compile a theme song change list. The live versions are so much better because you are seeing the PPV's in their original uncut form. While I was going through some VHS tapes, I was able to find the live airing from the 1991 Royal Rumble complete with the five-minute intermission.
The run-time varies from the live PPV masters to their CHV/TC and WWE video counterparts. If is answers part of your question TheBadGuyChico, the CVH/TC version of SummerSlam '88 is about one hour and 27 minutes. So much was edited from it that I can't tell you what was removed. There was a segment advertising a boxing match which was omitted from the home video releases.
Don't get me started on how the Bulldogs' elimination isn't shown on the CHV/TC version of Survivor Series '87. Let alone some of the introductions was re-voiced by Craig DeGeorge. Here is what I'm talking about:

As a kid watching the CHVs from the video store I had no idea what I was missing. Then 1998 hit with the WrestleMania releases 1-14 and I was shocked seeing so much that had been edited out like the 1st had the stock music for Hogan and Richter, no entrances for Windham/Rotundo or JYD and no interviews for most of the guys.
III was missing a lot of entrances too and the Jesse part with Matilda.
The CHV IV actually had a lot of exclusives that weren't shown on the re-release or the DVDs.
V had a Sherri interview, VII had a intermission piece with the Rona Barrett.
Those were just a few I remember.
Survivor Series 87 had the clipped entrances on CHV but the full entrances on the DVD set. Only thing missing from the DVDs was Steamboat's theme but a friend gave me a tape from the PPV he made in 1987. I think all the original pieces were seen in the WrestleMania 1998 releases (some original themes missing from DVDs), then the Summerslam, Survivor Series (aside from Steamboat theme) and Royal Rumble were all in tact on the DVS.
Survivor Series 88 CHV and DVD had a few different backstage segments.
I think RR 89 had a few interviews not seen on the CHV. I think RR 90 was kept pretty much in tact. RR 91 had different interviews on the CHV v. DVD (CHV had the backstage locker room-like wrestler only segments like Crush, Smash, Dino, Henning, Tugboat).
By Summerslam 91 I think the cuts were toned down, if not stopped completely. Summerslam 89 and 90 were packed on the CHV.
