 Today I drove to Lafayette, IN for band practice and decided to see if there was a TRU close by. I found this vintage piece of art. If this doesn't mean anything to you..I'm sorry you missed out on the best era of collecting. LJNs, Hasbros and BCAs will always be king. Toy Biz are cool too. Now a days all the Toys R Us look updated and to be honest, just like every other building near shopping malls. Just like how collecting has become bland and stale with really only one company putting effort into making toys. In case you were wondering about the inside.. The toy aisles are still set up the way they used to be.. All rows lead straight to the back with no rows intersecting. The WWE figures were towards the back and slightly to the left, as I remembered when I was a kid. Call me crazy, I don't care. |

Memories. Of course I wasn't around for then, but there used to be a TRU right by me that was just like that, but it got shut down in 2001

Thats awesome!! There's a Toys R Us in Knoxville, TN thats still set up like that. I went there last year while we were on our vacation and thought it was cool to see the old set up. The one in Bowling Green, KY was like this up until just a couple of years ago.
I remember when they did the first remodel to the Madison, TN Toys R Us, I hated it. They went from the classic aisle that you mentioned to these weird half aisles that came together in weird angles. Does anyone remember those? I hated going to that one after the remodel, but the Bowling Green store was still set up with the normal aisle so I loved going there. But eventually Madison fixed the odd angled aisles to what we have today, and Bowling Green updated as well.
Similar to this, although not as cool, the Madison, TN WalMart is not a SuperCenter (although thats gonna change in the next year I've heard) so its still set up similar to some of the old stores. I believe its the only one around thats not a SuperCenter in this area, so always enjoy the occasional stop there to see how the stores looked.

When I was working in Vernon Hills Illinois a few years back the TRU there looked like this one, but Inrecently passed that way, and they've updated.  |

Aw man...damn you!
We had a TRU in the Rolling Acres area of Akron, OH up until about 06-07. It was literally 2 minutes from my house. I'd go there bi-daily. Up until it closed, it was set up just like this. Same aisle set-up, same outside. Man. I have SO many good memories from that place. And back in the 90's, there was an equally as huge place called Children's Palace that might have even been BETTER than TRU. I miss those days.

I assume the TRU I've been going to my whole life had to be built in the late 80s. Seemingly the same white brick facade I've seen for the past 20+ years.
Vintage for me would be seeing the video game section lined with blue tarps with clear plastic pockets that held tickets that you had to bring up to the register if you wanted to buy a game.

man that takes me back. Do they still have the big glass cases that used to display NESes and the like, and who remembers when you had to grab a tag for certain items and after paying at the register you went to the window to pick it up? And heres another one..Geoffrey Dollars!

Oh, man that's cool. The last one that looked like that around here was in Greensboro and it shut down in 2003. Still, I went in one of the last few weeks it was open, my first time actually going in, and I scored several Gundam figures for something like $1.98 apiece if I remember correctly. I still remember how the TRU in Winston used to look when I was little. It's crazy what the mind latches onto. I remember where everything was on the aisles, too, and my brain has never scaled that stuff, so I assume if I walked into this TRU in my mind I would still have to ask someone to reach up to the higher items and get them for me.

My TRU beside the "ghetto mall" is still old school like this. Same set up and all. The one in the more upscale part of town though has been updated sadly.

it nice to finally see an old school toys r us like that. reminds me of my youth when the toy aisles seemed like the y reached the ceiling of the store and went on forever and were actually fully stocked with great toys. not like todays stores that not only to me seem empty (mostly in the figure aisles!lol) but are also toys r us/babies r us stores now which means less room for toys. I miss the excitement I used to get when I would walk into a toy store knowing the choices were endless but those days are long gone sadly.
anyone else feel this way too?

I go to the Johnson City TRU almost every day! Still junked up full of Green elite Cenas and WMH Bryan last time I went. Wow, so do you live in the Tri-Cities area? I'm actually in North Carolina, so when I say Johnson City TRU is my closest, it's actually about an 80 mile round trip, but JC is where I usually shop. Might have to hit you up and see if you've seen anything good next time I head that way, as I hate going all the way down there just to come back empty handed, which is more often than not. |
