How I Met Your Mother. I love both shows, but The Big Bang Theory wishes it had the writing that HIMYM does. I'm currently in the middle of season 6 of Big Bang and the show has accomplished practically nothing as far as the span of the series goes. You can watch almost any episode at any time and jump right into the laughs and understand, which is fine when you're looking to fill 22 minutes, but when you're an avid fan like me and power through seasons, I'm here in season 6 and just thinking "When is something going to happen?". All the show has really established are the relationships. Penny and Leonard hook up and break up a lot. I was originally impressed with the callbacks to prior episodes, but then I started watching HIMYM and it made spam's callbacks relatively sub-par. HIMYM on the other hand, gives you your 22 minute fill, provides laughs and methodical stories thats progressing over seasons. The writing on the show - continuity, callbacks, doing that thing where you take an episode or story arc from years ago and adding a new spin on it and tying it to the present, they do it all. Its a relatable show that takes real life issues and situations and puts a funny spin on it. Theres still two ing slaps left in the slap bet from Season 2 and were in season 9!!! Like I said I actually really enjoy Big Bang Theory, but when comparing it to How I met Your Mother, there's really no comparison. This is hard to argue with.

I don't watch either on a regular basis but HIMYM is tolerable. spam is so awkward and the jokes are cringeworthy. Kaley Cuoco is the only reason I watch it for and ironically I hate her character.

Love spam and the jokes are awesome. Penny is the worst thing about the show and the actress who plays her is gross (and looks like Paul Heyman).

I like Big Bang better but that's not really saying anything as these last three seasons have not been the best. These nerds should NEVER, EVER get girlfriends let along hot ones. The show was much better when they were trying to get chicks. Having Leonard with Penny and Howard with the Bernadette is just silly. That would never happen. And I'm sick of Amy. She's the worse addition to a cast since anything David Spade does. Sheldon still makes me laugh. So I stick with the reruns and DVR and never watch the new ones.
As for HIMYM? I despise that show just for Ted. I think he is the worse actor and I just want to curb stomp him. Barney is funny for the first three seconds and that's about it. I've only watched less than a handful and just cannot and do not want to get into it.
I'll also throw in the same for "Two and 1/2 men". Just looks stupid as all hell from the start.

I hate laugh track comedies, but How I Met Your Mother has a place in my heart. It's always been so entertaining and tells such an intricately woven, engaging story that I'm able to look past it. This season has really been the only exception. Still, though, the callbacks and continuity have been absolutely incredible. It's got a really special team of writers and actors.
Most of my friends love The Big Bang Theory, and I'm a big fan of Kaley Cuoco, but of the many episodes I've seen, I've only chuckled a few times. I just can't get into it. To be fair, though, I've never found anything Chuck Lorre has been directly involved with to be funny. I don't care for his humor at all.

IMO, nothing is funny on HIMYM even though I've watched most episodes out of boredom. I want to like it, but can't stand any of the characters - especially Ted. He falls in love with everyone in 2 seconds, so how are we suppose to buy into the fact that he meets 'the one?' The writing is incredibly insulting to me, but yet, I sadly still watch it.
Big Bang is enjoyable for me, but not what it use to be. It is still a million miles about HIMYM for entertainment purposes though.

HIMYM is kinda mediocre, but I just find Tspam really really bad. Sheldon is just unbearable.

I honestly can't stand laugh tracks in the slightest, but I love How I Met Your Mother so that wins automatically.
How I Met Your Mother and That 70s Show are honestly the only two shows with a laugh track I can watch.

I agree that Penny is a horrible character but I think the worst thing about the show is Sheldon, which is funny because he is a favorite character among the majority of the fan base. He's the most irritating character on TV. Although, I'll have to disagree with the statement of Kaley looking like Paul Heyman because I find her attractive (kind of see where you're getting that idea. Maybe if she was a relative or something along the lines). She has her off days but she has that girl next door look going for her. She's cute but not hot.

I don't like either one at all, I'd actually say they're both bad, but that's just my opinion.
I know they're both really popular, thats fine.

I've never seen How I Met Your Mother but I'd still choose something I've never seen over Big Bang Theory.

Big Bang Theory hands down.
The humour is top-notch, on-par with or better than Friends IMO. Those saying the 'geek jokes' make the programme unwatchable because the mass audience won't understand are delusional. My whole family watches the programme and laugh their socks off despite the references not always being understood by them. It's the character quirks, the delivery and acting that make the programme.
HIMYM I have never got into. It's boring IMO, and all it seems is Ted moaning and whining about moving from one relationship with a beautiful woman to another. As if he has anything to complain about. As a 'down-on-his-luck' guy, he seems to be doing pretty well.

Both have their spots. Forced to choose between the two, HIMYM wins.

I've watched both shows quite a bit and Big Bang is far better in my opinion. Mother has 1 or 2 characters that make every episode while Big Bang Theory is great overall. Sheldon is the best character for me, but everyone else is great as well. Even the repeat characters like Barry, Stuart, etc are great.

I watch both casually on syndication, but I like Big Bang a little more. It's primarily because I can sit down and watch just about any episode and laugh in a Friends, but not quite as awesome, kind of way. I really enjoy HIMYM too, but every time I watch it, I feel like I'm missing elements of the previous story in order to get the jokes, which is really my problem and not the shows. I'll probably go back and watch HIMYM from beginning to end at some point, which is something I have no interest in doing with Big Bang because you can enjoy it so casually. Just my viewing preference but I do enjoy them both.

Big bang theory! I don't think I ever watched an episode of How I met your mother. 2 and a half men is great too!
