So during the big Austin heel turn at Wrestlemania X-Seven which showed him shaking hands with Vince McMahon it could be inferred that Austin aligned with Vince because he "needed" to beat The Rock and would do anything to be WWF champion...right? Makes sense in a way I suppose.
But here is my question...why did Vince choose to go through with this (in kayfabe terms)? Austin made his life a living hell since 1997 so how did backing Austin as his champion benefit Vince? Was he that unhappy with The Rock in kayfabe? Did they ever explain this?
I honestly don't recall one bit if anything was actually explained or if they just suddenly became friends. All I remember was Austin kicking J.R.'s ass on Raw and then aligning with Triple H.
Any details or memory on this?

Kayfabe wise, it benefited Vince because its better to have Austin with him than against him, Austin in his storyline in that time was so desperate that, just like JR said, he sold his soul to the devil, Vince had the last laugh in the feud of Austin/McMahon if you think about it (going by the "The Attitute Era ended at WMX7" saying), not only Austin was hugging and kissing Vince's ass during that time, he was doing his bidding (beating up JR).

Funny you should bring this up. I am currently rewatching the entire year of 2001, I just finished watching Mania X7 recently and actually watched that episode of Smackdown where Austin whooped JRs ass last night. Lol

to say I hate this decision is a f*cking understatement.its one of THE worst booking decisions EVER.hands down.it totally neutered the Austin character.even Austin looks back on this period with disdain.and with Rock disappearing to do movies until August there was actually no need for this.
certain posters will tell you "Austin turned because Rock was getting cheered more than him"bull f*ckin sh*t.Austin was getting better responses than Rock from the moment he returned.the crowd was euphoric when Austin won the RR.the heat on HHH was enormous when he beat Austin at NWO.Rock was still incredibly over but on the run in to WM17 the crowd sided with Austin.
when HHH turned heel at WM15 it surprised the hell outta all of us but made sense.this made no sense at all.still though.....Austins turn at Invasion was 20 times worse.
worst of all?the epic encounter that they had at WM17 is ruined for me for all time because of this f*cking nonsense.it made WAY more sense for UT to turn heel after WM17 and be Vinces guy.

It's almost like they did it just to do it and nobody thought of how to explain WHY they did it.

I just remember Austin saying on his DVD that he thought he was getting stale and he thought it was a good decision at the time (which we all know how that turned out).

I always thought the reason of Austin 'needing to beat Rock, and would do anything to be champion,' as the reason for siding with Vince was weak. I mean Austin had Rock's number, especially when it was all on the line.

I think the real main event of Wrestlemania X7 happened a month prior at No Way Out in a 3 stages of hell match.
Austin vs. Triple H in that 3 stages of hell match, for the WWE Title, in the main event of Wrestlemania X7 would have been huge!!

It's almost like they did it just to do it and nobody thought of how to explain WHY they did it. I can agree with this. there was NO logical reason,in the story of the match, for Austin to need McMahon's help. hell,it was a no DQ, no countout match. Austin didn't need Vince to give him chairs,he could've got them himself! it made MORE sense for Rock to turn heel and ally himself again with Vince to keep his title. that said,I think they did it because they wanted to freshen Austin up,and make him a heel again. and i guess creative felt the only 100% surefire way to do tat was to have him be with vince.

Im telling yas.......this period in Austins career makes me ILL thinking about it.

I can't remember if I heard this on Stone Cold's podcast or Jericho's with him, but from what I heard the heel turn was actually on Austin himself thinking it would be a great time to cash in and get heel-heat. Vince just happened to think it was a good idea.

Austin's nitch was that he was the ultimate tweener. He would whoop anyone's ass and not give 2 craps. I get the story with him being desperate but turning heel to the point where he joined Vince and ran from opponents was stupid.

most infuriating for me(still)is the fact that Austin had the stroke to refuse the booking of his character running and turning tail.....no two ways about it.
I will NEVER get over that.

Im assuming that the writing team felt that of they kept Austin as an ass kicker, he would be cheered even if he was beating up faces. Its a trend that carries over into today. Once someone turns heel, they have to turn into a coward (ie Punk, Ryback, etc) Its maddening!

Austin frequently talks about this on his podcast. Basically cites it as his biggest regret of his career. He says that if he could change only one thing, he'd have Stunned Vince at the end of that match as well.
But yeah, Austin has also said a bunch of times that a heel turn was his idea. But he also realizes that even that wasn't such a hot idea now. I recall him saying a few times that "the crowd just wasn't ready to hate Stone Cold." And, as we see in the comments of this thread, he's 100% on the money.

Vince knew that Rock was departing.....why did he turn his other main guy heel?he had Angle and HHH there to be the Two man Power Trip if he had wanted.....or UT could have been turned. I mean Jesus.....look at the ME of backlash 2001 or when Austin & HHH(who always had some cheers) beat on the Hardys....the crowd was not Anti Austin. however as I have said...this was bad.....BUT the turn at Invasion was despicable.it tuned heaps of people I knew off watching WWF.their ratings declined hugely by Summerslam too.

Do you guys remember when Lita laid on top of one the Hardys and they whooped her ass with chairs?
