One key thing for me is that they are securing their fan base but possibly locking out potential fans. People become fans by stumbling across something on tv or hearing it from other then seein it. They aren't going to fork out the $$$ without being dedicated. Sure they can YouTube and such but it's now harder to secure new fans. I also thought of the DVDs. With access to a growing database of past ppvs, there really is no need to buy DVDs. At least not to the extent that earned them good DVD sales in the past. This seems like the best value option that all these peripheral things become redundant. Same with many of features on wwe.com such as countdowns an such. Lots of interesting questions and predicaments, but it's a pretty exciting time to be a wwe fan! But... Raw and Smackdown are still going to be on TV. And they're still going to offer the PPVs. This is a supplement to that, not a replacement. I don't see how you can say "oh no people won't be able to find it" if nothing from a television perspective is changing.

The DVD argument is also likely of little concern to WWE. If people still want to buy physical media, they're going to still buy physical media. I have a Netflix account, but I own plenty of Blu-Rays of films that are available to stream. Physical media collectors aren't going anywhere. They're going to continue to buy until the option no longer exists, and the option will no longer exist only if the studios and companies can't turn a profit by producing the media.
If you want physical copies of events for your collection, then continue to buy them. Ultimately, that's what is going to convince WWE to continue to release them.

I think your first concern is pretty much moot. I actually sympathize with the ritualistic traditions of Pay-Per-Views and whatnot, I used to feel the same way and I still feel the same way about other things. I like things to feel special, especially when I'm dumping money into them. To me, though, desensitization occurred years ago. Maybe it was when they increased the events from 5 all the way up to 12, and then as many as 14, and then back to 12, and so on and so forth. Maybe it was when they had split-brand Pay-Per-Views and the quality took a sharp hit. Maybe it was when the gimmicks started. Regardless of when you place the pin on the map, the concern you've raised has already happened for the vast majority of fans. Let's be honest here, a lot of people watch every Pay-Per-View of the year live, but simply do it illegally. Some buy a couple a watch the others illegally. Some split the events with friends. Some go to bars. There are various means by which a die hard fan can see the events live without forking over the cash. I'm not going to deny that I'm part of that group. Now I won't be. It's not going to make the experience any more special, but it's not going to devalue it either. If anything, I'm going to feel less stress. When I fork over $55 to WWE for a Pay-Per-View, I'm constantly worrying whether or not it's going to be garbage. Excluding Wrestlemania, I've ordered six Pay-Per-Views since the beginning of 2011. I only felt like I got my money's worth twice (MITB '11 and Summerslam '13), the other four times, I felt cheated and immediately regretted shelling out the cash. I don't have to worry about that anymore. As far as the decline in quality of the events, how much lower can they go? We're coming off a stretch of perhaps the worst 4 months worth of Pay-Per-Views in WWE history. I don't see how it could get much worse, so really, I expect it to improve. Burn-out really boils down to self control. WWE is going to do their best to prevent it by strategically releasing content as they see fit. We're not going to sign in on Monday the 24th and be overwhelmed with 100,000 hours of footage. What we do with it from there is on us. I use my Netflix account enough to warrant the $7.99 a month price tag, but I don't go overboard. I plan to do the same here, which may mean watching a few shows, or nothing at all. To me, I've already gotten my money's worth just by tuning into the Pay-Per-Views. If you get burnt out, it's really no one's fault but your own. The content isn't being shoved in your face. Finally, the subscription price just isn't something we can worry about right now. Will they raise the price? Who knows. We'll have to cross that bridge when we come to it. As of now, it's all just speculation. No use worrying about something you can't control or predict. I just don't understand why people are getting so worked up over the feasibility of this project and trying so desperately to view it in terms of feasibility for the company. We have a vested interest in the product and company, sure, but they're a business and businesses succeed and fail based on the risks they take. It's not our responsibility to worry about the sustainability of the Network. It's our job to support it if we like what's being offered, and enjoy the hell out of the fact that WWE is offering an incredible deal to its fans. Enjoy it while it lasts, and worry about the negatives when they arise. Couldn't have said it better myself

you nail a great point with the devaluation. when i was young, i had similar rituals to the ones you speak of but as i've gotten older i've lost that level of obsession with it - why? because it's simply not as enticing. some of that is just getting older, but most of it is the loss of hype. i still get it for 'big' shakedowns or matches.

Am I the only person who still wants to order WrestleMania through PPV, even though I will have the network? I mean I look at it this way, the sound and picture will definitely be better. I have ordered PPVs through WWE online and honestly was not happy with the lag, pixelated picture at times and lack of surround sound. Other than Mania though, I feel like WWE hit a home run. I thought of that too. I'm fine with slightly less quality on the other PPVs, but I'll actually order Mania on PPV for the best quality possible and no worries about lag, quality errors etc. Having assisted in the tech support of a fairly large operation video streaming, I can say without a shadow of a doubt, there is going to be a crash during Wrestlemania. Idiots with low bandwidth are going to buy it and get pissed when it doesn't work. People with horrible routing are going to blame WWE for it. And here's the big one.. WWE is GOING to get DDOS attacked. They're going to piss people off. The biggest one I see is the lack of international distribution at launch, and considering most DDOS kiddies are in Europe and the middle east.. Yeah.. They're going to get DDOSed and probably dropped by it. Hopefully not long.. But I get the feeling, knowing from an insider perspective.. They probably will. Hopefully they invested a few hundred grand into the best DDOS mitigation they can get..

Think we'll need Xbox Gold to use the WWE Network? If so, I'm out. No smart tv, no tablet, an 8 year old computer, and no desire to pay Microsoft what Sony supplies for free.

My only concern is if the Wrestlemania steam lags, or isn't good. THEN, I'll complain.
But as hard as they're pushing this, and the huge number of subscribers they'll have to watch Mania on the Network, I'm sure they've prepared and are ready to deliver a good steam.

This announcement is WAY more than what most people think of it.
The WWE is going to have their own Network when half of the wrestling companies today cant even make it on TV. It seems like a cool thing to me, going to have to see.
BTW, The logo they are using is disgusting.

I would say it's pretty much a guarantee you'll need Gold. And Sony is drawing closer to Microsoft's model, specifically with the PS4 as it relates to gaming. I've always thought they're both services unique in value and worth the money, but to each his own.

Can I ask something? How much do PPV's cost in the US? I'm really confused because I always thought they were $24 for everyone....
Anyways, the WWE Network in my opinion is great for fans, but for WWE? I mean they were very clever. If you subscribe, you're in for six months. If you just want to watch Mania and then never touch it, you are paying five bucks extra.
I'm getting the Network, close to 1/3 of the price for WM.

all i know is not matter what people say i will be getting this. Ive been waiting for something like this for many many years. I can afford $60 for 6 months without a problem. But then again if you are going broke and this is what sends you over the edge you have a lot more to worry about than $10 a month for wrestling.

I have ordered PPVs through WWE online and honestly was not happy with the lag, pixelated picture at times and lack of surround sound. Other than Mania though, I feel like WWE hit a home run. The network isn't being run by the WWE.com streaming team. It's a far more expensive, slicker operation run in association with the MLB guys. This isn't just them throwing more content on a WWE app or website. This is a massive deal. Whole new ballgame. Harder how? The shows that have TV deals still have TV deals. People can still stumble across Raw and Smackdown no problem. People only buy PPV DVDs to have them in a collection on their shelf anyway, don't they? Can I ask something? How much do PPV's cost in the US? I'm really confused because I always thought they were $24 for everyone.... Nope, they're about double that. $45. WrestleMania is $60.

The way I see it, is the WWE realizes that all of this is out there for free as it is. Illegal Streaming Sites will broadcast their PPV's, YouTube has all of these PPV's and matches, it's all out there. Hell, their own YouTube channel has been uploading matches and events over the last year and people have been watching them!! They're embracing this. They're realizing that people will stream their events, so why not make $10 off of something in a way that the NBA, NFL, MLB, and NHL are doing? This could be hugely successful or it could be very mediocre.

It doesn't matter what you all think! All that matters is... WWE Take My Money Now!
really... WWE already said they need 800k to 1 million subscribers to break even from the projected loss of revenue. I don't think that's that many when you figure in world wide numbers... And if they go over that amount.. it's a profitable decision...

As long as it stays under $15 a month and I have access to all 80s stuff from WCW/NWA, WWF, AWA and others...Then Ill be happy. If I pay $10/mo and all I get is access to Raw/SD, current PPVs and a bunch of recent garbage from the past 15 years....Im out.
