Out of every lawsuit, internal dispute, battle, etc., I had never read of this until tonight (from Wikipedia):
"Charles Austin controversy
In a Rockers tag team match at the USF Sun Dome in December 1990, Jannetty executed his Rocker Dropper finishing move on jobber Charles Austin, who had been teaming with Lanny Poffo. Austin's neck was instantly broken as a result of tucking his head during the move, rather than "pancaking" flat on the mat. Austin was severely injured and sued Jannetty, Michaels, and Titan Sports. When the case finally came to court in early 1994, Charles Austin was awarded $26.7M.[5]"
26.7 million...in 1990. WOW. It's incredible to think how big WWF/WWE is and was, to where 26.7 million dollars, as much of a blow as it was, did not make or break them. That's unbelievable...and all due to one Rocker Dropper.

How the hell was he able to sue for that? how many guys have been severely injured while wrestling and not one has gotten a dime from what I know. Wouldn't he have had to sign a waiver? 26.7M damn think about it, that's more than some of the top guys ever collected during their whole career......

That guy got 26.7 million for botching? Sin Cara must be filthy rich!
Seriously though, how did that guy win? It was his fault for doing the wrong thing.

I remember years later when Mr Perfect was doing commentary for the WWF. Jannetty was in a match and hit the move on someone, and Perfect said "Now that will break your neck" you gotta love Mr Perfect I bet Vince was pissed.

The OP did not post all the facts of the case. After executing the move, Jannetty recklessly rolled Austin onto his back, tagged in Michaels who proceeded to put the icing in the cake by slamming him onto the mat.

I remember hearing about this as a kid. This was what really split up the rockers initially. If there is no Charles Austin, there might be no Micheals singles run.

What was the Rocker Dropper? I read it was a wrist-lock leg drop bulldog, but all I can find (none being Jannetty) are Fameasser type moves. Can't see what the wrist-lock would look like in this.

Yeah, it was the Fameasser. He'd usually set it up differently to the way Billy and Ziggler do it, though. He'd use a wristlock to get them into position rather than a boot.

Wish I could see a video of him doing so.

You couple this with the steroid scandal and WCW starting to take his stars, Vince must have literally been pulling his hair out.

this was actually part of some other things going on too:
- at the same time Vince had to pay out the $26 million to Charles Austin,at the same time he also had to pay out nearly $1 million to Jesse Ventura, for a lawsuit he brought against the WWF for owed back royalties. so,yeah,Vince was getting hit pretty good here.
- as Buzzards said, things between the rockers were never the same after this incident.
- it actually ended Michaels first marriage. he said that the marriage was kind of on the rocks for awhile, but they were trying to repair it by going on a vacation/2nd Honeymoon in the Pocono Mountains, making it around an autograph signing he had to do there. Shawn said either on day 2 or 3 of the trip,I forget which, he was told by the WWF he had to fly down to Florida for 2 days to give testimony in the trial. when he got back, his wife told him she wanted a divorce.

I do remember a little bit about this when I was a kid. My mom tried turning the story into a "don't try this at home" segment.
