"JUST COVER HIM! You KNOW he's not gonna QUIT!" during the "End of an Era" at WrestleManiaXXVIII.
The Undertaker wasn't going to quit when he started.
He wasn't going to quit then, & he wasn't going to quit now.
While the match wasn't the Deadman's finest work in a typical sense, think about this.
Due to Brock Lesnar's dominance in real life combat sports, he is seen as the most legitimately dangerous man in modern wrestling. He even decimated four of Undertaker's past opponents since his return two years ago. He defeated Triple H twice, broke his arm, broke Shawn Michaels' arm, mauled Big Show, & injured Mark Henry.
For all intents & purposes, no one else would have been as believable. And Undertaker wasn't going to bow out.
He forced his opponents to take him out.
17 men had stepped up to do just that, & 17 men were set back down. Three of them more than once.
When you have an outlaw that stands as the last of his kind. Who refuses to fade away with a whimper, but burn out in a blaze of glory. To go out the way you came in.
Swinging for the fences unwavering determination to only go out when you are simply outdone.
What better way to go out, than to be the most enduring champion of your lifetime, to have dominated as the man could only be beaten by his own will or the most nefarious of acts, than to have a pinfall stolen from you by a mere second during an attempted kick-out, by the most vicious warrior of that period in time?
Did I want the streak to end? Not if you threaten to shoot me in the arm with an A-K47.
Do I think Undertaker was the most deserving star of any main eventer since Bruno Sammartino to hold such an honor as the streak? Beyond any form of refute.
Did I want Undertaker to have the most regal sendoff in all of Wrestling's history dating back 1885?
More than I want to be in a romantic relationship.
However.... Undertaker is not a person for pretension.
As hilarious as it is to say about a person who plays a supernatural Western Mortician, Undertaker is a realist.
A person who is raw in demeanor, but polished in execution. His matches feature no wasted motion, his behavior & mindset follow suit.
It is reasonable to hypothesize that he wanted a beautifully real ending, an unbelievable career.
I'm not claiming I know why the greatest record since Sammartino & Thesz's reigns as NWA, & WWWF champion respectively was ended. I'm throwing sone ideas in the air.
The greatest thespian in our history. From cover to cover, start to now, for all of history, & until further notice... has had what is considered his greatest achievement ended.
"How did it end?" is the question.
Was he robbed of his legacy, or was it finally solidified as a higher form of greatness, differently beautiful from all others?
My apologies for any writing errors I failed to notice.
I love you guys. Thank God(which one?) for WrestlingFigs.
