This past weekend, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueria was knocked out in the first round by Roy Nelson in the main event of the UFC's Abu Dhabi show. That now gives him back to back loses for the first time ever in his career and before that he alternated wins and loses since beating Tim Sylvia back in 2008 for the UFC Interim Heavyweight Title. This also marks the 5th time he's been stopped in that time frame after not being stopped in 35 fights prior. Now don't get me wrong, I have loved watching Big Nog fight since the first time I saw him fight against Mark Coleman at Pride 16 in 2001. But that was a long time ago and its evident to me that Big Nog can't fight the way he used to. His calling card was his ability to absorb inhuman amounts of punishment then lock up the submission. But recently he has been stopped by Velasquez, Mir twice, Werdum, and now Country. His wins in that time have been against Dave Herman (not in the UFC and fighting a middleweight in Kaleb Starnes in his next fight), Brendan Schaub who is vastly overrated and has a glass jaw and Randy Couture who was ready to make movies and be done with Dana. It's obvious and has been for a while that he isn't getting back to the title, and at 37 with 45 pro fights against the best heavyweights in the world, is it time for him to step away and solely train the talented fighters he has in his camp? He has done it all, only Pride and UFC champ, and depending on who you ask the greatest heavyweight submission artist ever if not the greatest heavyweight ever.
If you think Nog should retire, how will you remember him? If he should stay, who does he fight next?

I'd like to see him retire... it was really sad seeing him KO'd like that. He's still capable of beating guys like Schaub and Herman - but his punch-resistance is nowhere near as good as it used to be and really, he has nothing left to prove. He'll still probably go down as the second greatest heavyweight ever (after Fedor).

I love Big Nog but agree, he should hang them up...he will absolutely go down as one of the greatest fighters of all time.

He'll still probably go down as the second greatest heavyweight ever (after Fedor). I actually have him ahead of Fedor as the greatest heavyweight ever. Reason being is while Fedor has won both meetings with Big Nog and has that super long streak, Big Nog has fought better overall competition since their last meeting in 2004 in the Pride Grand Prix. And that streak was built on tomato cans and dudes way past their primes. Lindland was overrated, Arvloski had a shot chin, Sylvia and Rogers were never that good. The first guy he took on that wasn't in a funk or out of their weight class and overrated was Werdum, and he got tapped out. Granted Fedor was too aggressive, but then Big Foot trounced him and Hendo knocked him out in one shot. So calling Fedor the greatest heavyweight ever is a stretch because of how he did against legit top tier competition.

Man, that was an absolute VICIOUS knockout by "Big Country". He put Big Nog to sleep and I believe the ONLY fighter to do so. Sure, he's been finished TKO, but I think when Big Roy dropped him like that, he's the ONLY fighter to put him to sleep.
If Big Nog did continue, I have no idea who you'd put him with at this point. I've heard he wants to one last fight with Frank Mir before he retires. I have no idea why. Mir is already 2-up on him. Even if he did beat Mir, it wouldn't do anything for his career at this point.
I think it's time for Big Nog to hang up the gloves.

Truth be told, I'm was a little surprised that Schaub didn't finish him a few years ago. He caught him on more than one occasion, but got cocky about it and ended up with his back against the cage before getting caught himself.
The worst part about the Nelson fight is there wasn't a single person wonder "if", but just wondering "when" regarding the knockout.
That being said, I wouldn't be surprised to see him fight one more time.

You're probably right Sean, Nog probably will fight one more time though I really wouldn't want to see it. You can't blame a fighter for wanting to go out on his sword, but reference Gary Goodridge to find a fighter who hung on too long.

Especially after a knockout like that, let alone the two almost knockouts minutes before it.

His whole Pride career he took a lot of damage. He took some of Cro Cop's best shots in their 2003 fight including the head kick that used to murder dudes. He took big damage against Barnett and Bob Sapp. Thats the problem when your game is on the bottom in guard, you have to eat shots to catch something a lot of times. So while he may not have been stopped until Mir, the cumulative damage is what I take into account.

To further add to the point, its like the firefights Liddell used to get into. All it takes is one brutal KO and you aren't the same.

Dana will probably have to force him out like he did Liddell and Hughes.
