I know I've been quiet for a while. I haven't made much progress on WCWA recently and have had very little free time. But here's something that came through my head that I feel the need to share, to give a little insight into how my mind operates booking wise. I call it...
Fixing Goldberg
Goldberg was WCW's last real star and could've been the saving grace, but the heads of the ship had to ruin him just as fast as they made him. The streak lasted in total just barely over a year. That's baffling. I'm going to keep Goldberg the same, up to these key points:
Hogan at the Georgia Dome
This is where they went wrong with Goldberg, but it's EASILY fixable to a right. Goldberg, with the streak, COULDN'T be the World champion, because the World champion has to eventually be defeated. Leave the streak without the World title. And here, we're going to fix something else too. We're keeping Goldberg vs. Hogan, for the title, at the Georgia Dome on Nitro. Pop the rating, pop the big gate. To take this match, Goldberg vacates the WCW United States championship, which gets out of the "Goldberg has this belt, we need to beat him to get it off of him" problem. I'd still have him beat Raven for that title because it was a key moment for Goldberg's development. But going into the Dome, the US title is vacated.
In the Georgia Dome, Goldberg has Hogan beat. He's the better man. He nails the Jackhammer center ring. Gets up and poses... And Hogan rolls to the outside. With the help of let's say Vincent, Hogan heads to the backstage area. Hogan is counted out. Goldberg gets the win, he's beat Hulk Hogan in the Georgia Dome, but it was by count out and therefore, the title doesn't change hands. Take this match on the road and on the road for a few months, Goldberg beats Hogan every night by count out. On TV and on PPVs, Goldberg runs through the nWo. TVs, he's beating Curt Hennig, Scott Norton, Buff Bagwell.. PPVs he's beating Hall, Nash, The Giant.. He's running through the nWo because prior to the screw job in the Georgia Dome, Goldberg didn't give a crap about the nWo but now he's pissed at them. He's going to bring them down.
We're going to keep the Hennig/Goldberg PPV match that was for the title on PPV, obviously non title.. But this is going to be a key match for Goldberg because he's going to DESTROY Hennig. Hennig was one of the best sellers around and could work a broom stick, so he'll make Goldberg look better than anyone out there. And Goldberg is just going to cream him. He's going to cream him so bad that Hennig is put on the shelf. Let him manage for a little while. But Hennig is now on the shelf.
Got guys heading to Japan for tours? Norton, Bogus Sting, Buff Bagwell? Goldberg destroys them on TV. The announcers put over that they're gone, that they're hurt. We'll give him one of these squashes over Scott Hall on Nitro too. He kills Hall, Hall is stretchered out.. Let him tour with NJPW for a month or so, just long enough that people forget that he did get destroyed. But quickly, the nWo is no longer this giant gang. It's down to just Scott Steiner, Hulk Hogan, Kevin Nash, & Vincent.
Starrcade 98
We're a few months after the Georgia Dome now. It's Starrcade. We're going to put Hogan with DDP. Hogan vs. DDP for the title, DDP over. Giant is going to face Ric Flair and if Flair wins, he gets Bischoff in the ring for 5 minutes, giving us the Flair/Bischoff blow off without the terrible match. But a feature match is going to be Kevin Nash vs. Goldberg. Goldberg is dominating... and out comes Scott Hall. And he's got the taser. Hall zaps Goldberg, Goldberg's stunned.. He walks into a Nash powerbomb. Nash with the cover, 1.....2..... AND GOLDBERG KICKS OUT. Hall slides in, zaps Goldberg again blatantly in front of the ref, it's a DQ. Nash powerbombs Goldberg three more times and they leave him laying. Spray paint him nWo. Streak is still in tact, Hall has his revenge, and we're heading into 1999.
Taser Match and keeping Goldberg busy
Goldberg beats Hall in a taser match and puts him out again. Bam Bam Bigelow interferes. We get the Goldberg/Bam Bam program as Hogan works with DDP. DDP takes the title at Starrcade, but we give it back to Hogan around Spring Stampede. Now we're heading into Great American Bash. Goldberg beats Nash clean at the Bash, then calls out Hogan. We're heading towards Hogan/Goldberg... but it's too early and he's got to dispose of Scott Steiner first. Month or two program with Steiner, hard fought matches but Goldberg comes out on top. Just when it seems we're about to get Hogan/Goldberg, Jeff Jarrett shows up! Jarrett kabongs Goldberg, hard ways him. Now we've got Jarrett (nWo) versus Goldberg heading into Halloween Havoc (or a November PPV if the timeline doesn't match up for Jarrett's arrival)
Jeff Jarrett vs. Goldberg
Jarrett is a Curt Hennig type and will work well with Goldberg, but ultimately, Goldberg runs through him too. Let's get the cool visual of Goldberg spearing a guitar and it blowing to pieces in route to Goldberg beating Jarrett. And now it's set up. There's no one left. Hall's gone. Nash is gone. Bam Bam is gone. Jarrett's been disposed of. Steiner's gone. It's just Hogan and Goldberg. And it's Starrcade 99.
Starrcade 99
Now I know I said putting the title on Goldberg is wrong and something we never want to do, but now.. it's time. Hogan is stale, WCW is in trouble, we're heading into 2000... So Goldberg beats Hogan. Clean. No interference, no shenanigans. Clean, center of the ring, at Starrcade 99. Into 2000, you revisit all of the nWo top guys in main programs, Hogan, Steiner, Jarrett, Nash.. All title matches. And when Goldberg beats them all, the nWo is disbanded once and for all. You get the Nash/Jarrett, Nash/Hogan, Jarrett/Steiner side feuds, while Goldberg works on top with Booker T, Bret Hart (no kick means no stroke means Bret continues working), Sting (first time match up, will be hot), DDP.. They're all trying to not only win the World title but end the streak. It's a big deal. Ron & Don Harris come over from WWF? They're fed to Goldberg immediately, big guys and fresh. Feed them.
Ending the streak
Goldberg matches are no longer on every Nitro and if he works Nitro, it's a 30 second kill over a guy like The Sarge or Bobby Eaton or something. It's a total squash and not a name match. because at this point, the name matches are pretty much exhausted with Goldberg. You can milk a rematch or two with Hogan or Nash and get a fresh match with Savage.. You've got someone like Vampiro who picks up steam from Sting, maybe he'll be the one? But he's not. Mike Awesome, this guy jumping ship from ECW. He had the ECW title and he's a big powerful dude. Awesome gets a good long PPV match out of Goldberg, probably Goldberg's hardest hitting match.. But he falls too. WCW is getting desperate here, though. We're mid 2000, maybe even late 2000. They're dying. They're still bleeding money because while we've turned business around, we haven't done that well and we're not changing THAT MUCH beyond just Goldberg. Vince Russo is a top heel. After destroying let's say Kaz Hayashi, Russo comes out and says Goldberg's biggest test is still to come.
He's going to turn heel.
No one wants to see the babyface top guy unbeatable monster beaten, but when he's this dickhead ass who's walking around with Vince Russo saying "I CAN'T BE BEAT!!!" there's legitimate money in beating him for the title. And the man to do it? Booker T. He's young, he's fresh, and with the nWo and Goldberg tying up the title, we're at Starrcade 2000 and it will be Booker's first title win. This makes Booker. And we're going to assume Goldberg's contract ran out in January 01? Then after the Starrcade loss, he disappears. He's gone. He's been beaten so he's lost his appeal. If WCW survives, he can return around May or so on a new contract, if they don't, he shows up in WWE after the Invasion.. And they do whatever it is they're going to do with him.
