I ALWAYS always go above and beyond my expectations. Even though I do it with both genders, I would only suggest doing it with a lady. Wait what?

I'm gonna say he means he went above and beyond to help male and female customers. Yeah I understood that, the wording just felt overly sexual though lol.

But on topic Id say I am in the middle. If I see people actually doing their work it motivates me but when I see someone standing around it kinda pisses me off and just takes the focus right out of work.

I pride myself in being a work horse. Recognition or not.

I'll admit I've taken a few sneaky naps as soon as I've gotten to work. Other than that I wouldn't really call myself the 'under the radar' type.

As the owner of my own business any time I notice a worker working harder than their co-workers I always reward them. It's hard to find good help. I also find that those type of workers also don't stay in the same positions and I promote them. Keep up the hard work and it will pay off.

I stand out at my job unfortunately. I work really hard and people recognize it. Unfortunately, at my job, the people that work the hardest only get rewarded with more work. What usually happens is that I agree to help someone with something and I suddenly have a new reoccurring responsibility. I can't say I don't want to do it because it's now part of my job description. Even though I have a set amount of paid time off I have to take each year, it's tough to take it because almost everyone working here relies on me for something. Even when I do take days off, I end up getting tons of e-mails from people in the office that I have to respond to.
It all comes down to pride in myself though. I couldn't be someone who just does what I'm supposed to do and nothing more. I've tried it and it never works. If I know I can do more, then I have to do more. It's just in my nature.
At one of my last jobs, I went the extra mile but it was a bigger company and I went largely unnoticed. For the time I was there, it was great. I was being paid well and I had no stress. Over here I'm considered to be "management" even though I only make half what the other managers make, but I'm constantly under stress. I'm 26 and my hair and beard are already showing some signs of grey.
UPDATE: Almost on cue, my boss just walked in to talk to me about a time sensitive project that two other people were supposed to work on. They haven't done it so now I'm being asked to work over the weekend to get this project done.

I'm a manager in retail and I often stand out. I don't agree with some of the policies and procedures the upper level management come up with and I often clash with my boss over issues. That being said, if she asks me to do something, I'll do it if I agree or not and I expect the same from my employees.

I would say it all depends on where you work. You better than anyone should have a good feel and understanding for what the environment is like at your workplace.
My fav job was some years ago for a small local company. I was doing deliveries to local businesses. It was great pay and best of all no one was bothering me. Every day I went to work looking foward to my work day every day because I would make a game out of how fast I could finish. I was trying to finish as fast as I could because we, drivers, would get paid a full day (8hrs) even if we got done earlier. I remember one day I started at 430 am and by 8 am I was done for the day. I took a long lunch and still made it back before the 8 hr mark.
At that job you were rewarded for being as fast, reliable, and efficient as possible.
Now more recently I had a job for a big company where being fast was not a good thing for the drivers. Being fast only got you watched by the safety department. Being fast also only got you more assignments. It was the complete opposite of what I liked. So in that job the slower you were the better off things were for the driver. I remember when I first started at this big company I thought I would work hard and do a good job. I ended up doing twice the workload for a day because I thought hard work would pay off. At this big company being a good worker, a fast worker only got you problems.
So I would say it all depends on where you work.

Certainly fly low. Im head over a Commercial department, if I overachieve they'll have me start doing things up front in the retail side and then try to put me in a role of a store manager or something....something of which I have no desire to get into. I come in, do my job and hit my numbers. As long as I hit my numbers I get paid (wages + bonuses). Me getting promoted to another position in Commercial side has nothing to do with how hard I do/dont work...Just depends on my numbers.
