You only have to do it around here if you get a DUI.

I did community service if it can even be called that. It was basically a free period, all I did was go into my counselors office and help with papers/ went to other classrooms to get students that he needed to talk to. That was pretty much it. It wasn't mandatory though.

I think mandatory community service is ridiculous. It instills no values in a student, and teaches them to help others for their own selfish gain.
After all, the Good Samaritan didn't stop to help the man on the side of the road because it would look good on his college application.

This is a bit of local news. 48 students will not be allowed to participate in graduation ceremonies this year because they did not complete mandatory community service. a link to the news article articles.chicagotribune.com/2014-05-20/news/chi-48-oak-lawn-seniors-banned-from-graduation-ceremony-20140520_1_graduation-ceremony-community-service-forged-documentsThis was news to me. I did not have this mandatory community service imposed on me when I was in high School. I see it as slavery. I always thought community service was a punishment appointed to a person by a court of law. I think if I was a parent of one of these kids I'd be very upset. I'd want my kids at home where it is safe, not working for free at some random place. Is this an Illinois only thing? Do they have mandatory community service near you? Were you forced into slavery in order to be able to graduate? Thank god I wasnt part of this fad. 24 is nothing! I had to do 200 hours to graduate.

as someone else stated, it's mandatory in the province of ontario so my high school had everyone do it. i didn't, and that's actually why i didn't graduate through high school.

I remember my senior year you had to do a few hours of community service to have senior privileges, which the main thing was, if you had a study period, you could leave the school.

That's disturbing. Can't graduate because you won't perform a mandatory punishment that wasn't earned. How sick. I never had to do community service in NJ and haven't heard about it here in MA only when kids get in trouble do we have to do stuff like that. It's a punishment. Not a mandatory educational task. Smh.

I've heard of this at different high schools, including in illinois. My high school flirted with the idea, but still hasn't done it. I don't necessarily have a problem with it, if it's within reason. Like, perhaps some of it is done during school hours or its regarding a legit community project, & not something stupid like picking up trash on the side of the road. The only real issue I think there could be is if this is all done outside of school time & it cuts into hours kids use for part time jobs. I worked all through high school. Usually between 24-30 hours a week, on top of school & sports. I'd be Pisces if I had to give up paying hours & could understand the argument opposing the topic.

I think this community service stuff is screwed up especially all the community service needed to get into college. This community service becoming more important than grades. I don't have a problem with it being done but it should not be mandatory and keep the students with good grades from getting into college over the ones that do more community service with not as good grades.

Nope. It was strongly recommended for college application purposes, but it wasn't required. A couple of years after I left, they added a requirement, but I think they were pretty lenient about it.
I had amassed hundreds of hours by the time I graduated anyway, as my father was running the town's 4th of July Celebration at the time (the largest in the state), so I was constantly working for the committee. I also took a Community Based Learning class my senior year and we did a whole bunch of community work.

I only had to do community service when I got Saturday school which was pretty much every week. Then I switch school district and 300 of my detention slips were erase!
I fought the law and I won!

I dont understand how people are calling it a punishment.. if its a requirement to graduate, its no different than taking classes. You need so many credits to graduate, this counts towards your graduation. do it.....

Did I? No. But my daughter has to do it every year as part of the honors/Principle's list.

Nope. Wasn't required. I find that notion to be very strange.

Just get it done with so you don't have to worry about it. Try to find time in the summer when you're free or do it with friends together so at least you can have fun.
