Some early line thoughts of discussion.
Who saw that coming. Barao being on the tear that he was on, crushing everyone in sight, including Dillashaw's teammate Faber twice. Watching the highlights, Dillashaw looked like a monster and Barao looked lost and out of it early. Still doesn't take off the shine of the new champ's performance. Potential first defenses are Assunscao, Cruz and we'll say Johnny Eduardo since he did just KO Wineland who was ranked #4. I can't justify giving Barao a rematch because of how lopsided it was. Faber and Dillashaw are teammates, so they're gonna stay away from that one for a while. The division doesn't have any standout contenders right now except Assunscao's six fight winning streak.
Cormier did what I thought he would, including getting a submission. His jujitsu game is the one thing we haven't seen since his kickboxing has been sharp since day 1 and his wrestling is crazy good. That and Dillashaw's performance were perfect examples of having a good gameplan while still being aggressive and going after the finish. DC should be next up after Gustaffson, and I'll stick by my prediction I made when he dropped to 205, and that was he would be the one to be Jones.
I don't know exactly what Robbie Lawler has been doing since he's come back to the UFC, but damn it he has looked great. I believe he is the number 1 contender no matter what Woodley and McDonald do next month. Ellenberger needs to reassess something because he's not the same killer that he was when he first came in. He needs to find that way again if he wants to stay in the top 10.
A finish from Mizugaki would've probably leapfrogged him in the ranks to a title shot, but I can't help but think we'll see him against a guy like McDonald next.
Sucks for Varner tearing his ankle up. I've been following Varner and Krause since their WEC days and I was really excited to see this fight. Sucks it ended the way it did. All heart by Varner gutting it out until the end of the round before the doc and his corner told him no more. Then the doc steps on his ankle. Anyone else think that was a little dumb on his part?
So here it is guys, results with some talking points. Discuss!
