A lower league coach inheriting a team with a lot of issues, getting the team to play his way for a little bit then letting the stars get what they want. I hope I am wrong on that.

Johnston was third on my wanted coaches, right after Trotz and Willie. In other news Kings got Gaborik on a fantastic contract. Now that I said that I'll eat my words in a few years.

I'm hoping to sweet Jesus that Kesler ends up on the Hawks. I'm not sure what's going to happen with the Kane and Toews contracts but I have to imagine Kane is the harder of the two to make happy in terms of dollars right now and letting him play on a line with Kesler would seemingly help the negotiations. I know moving Sharp or Seabrook is eminent but I'm hoping whatever deal they are attempting to work with Vancouver is built around Sharp. I don't particularly want to see Keith and Seabs split up even though the Hawks have a nice pool of young D that can step in next year. A Kesler move would also allow Shaw to move back to the wing, which would be extremely beneficial imo. I've been saying for 2 years, that I don't think people realize how difficult it is going to be for the Hawks to keep Kane here. I've just had this bad feeling about him. I'm not worried at all about Toews. He's not going anywhere. I think Kesler coming here would be great, but I can't imagine how that contract is going to fit in with the Kane/Toews contracts, even if they were to unload Sharp & Seabrook's contracts.

I think Kesler coming here would be great, but I can't imagine how that contract is going to fit in with the Kane/Toews contracts, even if they were to unload Sharp & Seabrook's contracts. Sharp is a 5.9m cap hit for the next 3 years, and Kesler is a 5m hit for the next 2, for a player who is 3 years younger and a much better 2-way player. Plus the salary cap is increasing. If you give Toews 9m and Kane 10-11m (Or both of them 10m and load Kane's contract with incentive bonuses), then they have the space, assuming they move Sharp. They have the luxury of a bunch of cap friendly productive youngsters, Saad being the most obvious, but Teuvo will likely play on the 3rd or 4th line based on his rookie salary. Oduya and Rosival come off the books next year as well, which frees up money going towards Kane and Toews. The biggest problem I see is Vancouver letting Kesler go. They are talking Saad or Teuvo for starting off packages and that's just not realistic. Something built around Sharp, who is still extremely cap friendly for his production, and draft picks or lesser prospects shouldn't be out of the question. It's not like Vancouver has a choice. Kesler is going to play disgruntled until they let him leave, and right now his list is at 2 teams. There is also the issue of Sharp having a limited no trade, and Sharp has said he wants to end his career with the Hawks. Seabrook has a limited NTC too but is a BC guy, so he's probably more receptive to Vancouver than Sharp at this point. I think the Toews and Kane deal is going to get done though. It's the priority and has been the priority. I think you're definitely spot on in saying Kane is the more difficult challenge between the two, and I think that's fair from Kane's perspective because he would likely demand more on the open market.

No, it's a great deal. All you can judge a move on is how it was perceived at the time and this was an extremely nice signing for the Kings. It's front loaded until he hits 35 and then shows a natural decline for what will surely be his declining production years. Gaborik finally found a system he fits in and his best move was to stay put. The cap hit will likely be a steal for the next 2-3 years and will more than compensate for the pain they'll feel on the back end of the deal, which may not be much of an issue if the cap continues to grow. I think Gaborik could have gotten more money on a worse team but Gaborik and the Kings have a mutual value to each other. My ONLY argument on Gaborik is his health. You know the production is there when he's on the ice but he has to stay healthy. That's a risk you run with every single player, but Gaborik is carving a bit of a Forsberg like path with his injuries as of late. Which I guess is fine as long as he's going to show up and lead the post season in g-notes haha.

Kane & Toews are each looking for $12 million a year. Then I read this stat on ESPN Chicago:
According to Capgeek.com, the Blackhawks have approximately $29.04 million available in cap space for 2015-16. Assuming Kane and Toews each are able to command $10 million per year, that would leave just more than $9 million -- under the current salary cap of $71.1 million -- for the team to sign its remaining 12 players.
I'M scared.

I'M scared. Yeah either one takes a paycut or you lose one of them. Or, alternatively, do what the Pens did and put all of your eggs in the basket of four players and sign schmucks to fill the voids and hope they play decently. Either way Chicago could be in trouble though.

Kane and Toews are both going to take around 10 million each a year and stay. That 12 million mark is just their ceiling. Ovechkin has the highest cap hit in the league at 9.538m and an 8 year deal at 10 each would put them both over that and the Suter and Parise deals. That essentially makes them both the highest paid players in the league over the course of their, now max, 8 year contracts. I mean Bowman can front load it so they are making as much as Crosby next year if that's what they want but they will just be handicapping their own chances to win and locking up cap space.
This is a game. You say 12, I say 8. You say 11, I say 9. Then we agree to 10 million each, go get pieces to support you and we win another Stanley Cup. Kane and Toews aren't going anywhere.

Hawks extend Smith and Raanta: www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=724105&navid=nhl:topheadsGlad this is done. Raanta is a devil we know versus one we don't and I think he'll improve. He has flashes of brilliance at times where he looks better than Crow. He seriously needs to work on his shootout technique this summer though because he got taken to the shed with his jock around his ankles plenty of times last year. Love Ben Smith, immensely. Great motor, finds the net and still has upside. He's a great 3rd line player but can play with pretty much every line. Absolutely vital to the penalty kill.

I can see Kane coming to Buffalo. Buffalo has the money and Kane wants to play for his hometown team.

You won't find any Hawks fan happier than me to see Raanta resigned. I said it before he ever suited up, one day, he'll take the starting job in Chicago. Kesler to Anaheim, can't say I saw that one coming. That was...unexpected. I can see Kane coming to Buffalo. Buffalo has the money and Kane wants to play for his hometown team. I know he's said before he wanted to play there. I could see Buffalo just throwing a crap ton of money at him to lure him there. But he'll never win there. James Neal just got traded to Nashville. This might be an interesting draft after all.
