Have any of you ever done this? I'm not talking about bandwagon fans who run with whoever the champs are.
Here's the deal. From the time I was about 8 I've claimed to be a Dallas Cowboys fan. But that was because dad was. I never REALLY watched football up until 2010. Now I absolutely love the sport.
My problem is that I have zero faith in then anymore. I like a few players such as Dez Bryant and DeMarco Murray. However as a collective unit I'm often disgusted. Romo can't make it happen when it counts and Jerry Jones won't make changes needed there. He also won't give things a chance to work before he bails (like firing Rob Ryan)
Quite frankly I just expect them to suck and it makes me not look forward to the season. I'd like to get behind an organization I have fun supporting but I'm torn over being "loyal."

My teams are weird, I didn't care about football until 2005. So i was 7 and picked the Colt's because I liked their mascot. Funny because my dad is a huge cowboy's fan and he was like as long as you stick to your team you can root for anyone... Except the eagles. The 2nd year i cheered for them they won the super bowl and i was hooked.
As for you, now that you're into the sport and if the decisions they make annoy you, I don't see a problem in switching teams.

I dont like switching teams. Whether the new team you root for is good or not, you're still not showing any loyalty. To me, if you're gonna be loyal to a team you need to stick with them. Ive been a 49ers fan since 1987. They're "my team"...however when it comes to college football, I claim no loyalty to any team. Ill root for Miami (childhood favorite), Tennessee (hometown favorite), Stanford (Ties to 49ers), South Carolina (freaking love going to games there) but I dont claim to be a fan of any.

I pretty much grew up into liking the Eagles as my dad was an Eagles fan. Around 2004-2005 was when I really started getting into it and it's a coincidence because that's the year they went to the Super Bowl. I'm really glad that I'm an Eagles fan and there's no other team I'd rather root for. I will never switch teams. I'll always be loyal to the Birds!
I do like the Texans but it's sort of just a joke but I will still support them when the do good.
E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!!

I've never switched teams, as all the teams I like for the most part were local. I have expanded and started to like other teams, especially during a bad run, but nothing will ever replace the originals for me. <3 Tampa Bay

I get where you're coming from but rooting for a team isn't always fun, speaking from experience here. Stay loyal through the lows, it makes the highs that much sweeter.

Since I live in New York, I liked the Jets and the Giants. But, my cousin, who also lives in New York, loves the Patriots. I looked up to him as the older brother I never had so I grew up liking the Pats and I still love them today.

If you have the ability to switch teams then you're probably not even really a fan to begin with. It's not even that I'm trying to be patronizing; I just can't see how you could suddenly stop caring about them unless you never really did.

Yeah it's rare but still. Then what? I look at it like this. I have my favorite teams: Steelers Pens Pirates Pitt Power Crew Chelsea Celtics But I also have favorite players in said sport. My favorite hockey team? Pens. Favorite player? Mikko Koivu. Therefore I root for him to have much success, and drooled this year when the Wild and Pens had a shot at meeting in the Cup Finals. Soccer, the Crew. But my favorite American player is Lando, captain of the arch-nemesis of almost every MLS team in the Galaxy. I hope he does well. Also look at college. I am a Pitt fan, but I go to Point Park. I am a Pioneer, not a Panther, but I root for Pitt except when they play Point Park (normally exhibition cupcake games for Pitt because we suck at every sport.) When it comes down to it: if the Pens play the Wild, I root for the Pens, Crew vs. Galaxy, Crew. But I deem it good to root for players too, but that might just be me.

My point is can you ever really just flip that switch and suddenly have another team replace the old one? Like if the Penguins were contracted you may start cheering for the Wild but would you really feel the same way about them as you did the Penguins? Have the same type of emotional investment during wins and losses? I doubt it.

I can walk to a Steelers, Pirates or Pens game in 5 minutes from where I live. Hometown goes a long way too towards if I would be bitter, and how long I would be neutral though.

I was born into being a Blue Jays fan since several people in the family worked for them at the time, growing up I would watch the games with my grandmother and I've stuck with it. It's pretty cool to be able to talk baseball with her still to this day. It just sucks that the first 2 years of my life were the glory years followed by 21 years of disappointment.

At this point, being a fan of the Cowboys is not entertaining to me. I just want to enjoy the games again. The sport as a whole I still really enjoy. That particular team...just irritated.

I grew up with the Jets, Nets, Yankees and Rangers as my four teams from the four major American sports. I did so because my brother liked them and I just went with it. When I actually really started to pay attention to sports around 2004, I noticed that I did not really like the Yankees team. With exception of Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Jorge Posada, Hideki Matsui and Mike Mussina I did not like the team. And I realized that I shouldn't just root for them because of my brother. So I wanted a new team. Come 2005, the Montreal Expos become the Washington Nationals. I decided to use them in a video game to build them into a winning franchise and I fell in love. I've been loyal to them ever since. Through 59 win seasons to the 2012 division title to the disappointment of 2013, I'm a Washington Nationals fan through and through.

I was always in a bit of a weird spot too.
Growing up, I never cared about football, or any sport for that matter. My dad would always watch Patriots games and I'd sometimes watch with him, but I didn't care. Sometimes I'd even root against them just be opposite of him.
I didn't get into football until I started college. I was pretty miserable at the first school I was at, and I frequently had nothing to do on Sundays, so I'd just watch football all day and night. I quickly grew to love it.
Being from New England, it seemed like I should automatically root for the Patriots, but something drew me away from them. I think it was because I was so accustomed to seeing them win all the time, I wanted a bit of a challenge, so to speak.
Inexplicably, I latched on to two teams with rookie quarterbacks, both rebuilding their franchises - the Ravens, and the Falcons.
I was partial to the Falcons at first. I went into the next season thinking they were my team. As the year progressed, though, I started seeing more Ravens games on TV, likely because I was watching CBS/AFC broadcasts with more regularity due to the Patriots. By the following season, I was fully entrenched with the Ravens and I haven't wavered since.
I still like and root for the Falcons over in the NFC, but I consider Baltimore to be my team. I can't explain to people why, or how it happened, but it did. Last year was the first time since becoming a fan that I had to watch the playoffs without a vested interest, but it didn't deter me.
Really, though, I love football now and there are very few teams I dislike. I can't stand the Steelers or the Giants, and I'm starting to dislike the 49ers. Still, though, I enjoy watching nearly every team.

Honestly, if you are going to switch teams every time things get frustrating or difficult, then you are going to be switching every few years.
I've been pulling for the Falcons for over 30 years. At least 20 years of that have been frustrating or difficult. The Cowboys have several Super Bowl wins, and my team has only been in it once and got blown out. I guess I don't understand why you would bother watching if you can't be loyal to your team. It sounds like you aren't interested if they aren't good.
Stick with your team through good times and bad, it's more rewarding when they do win.

The first football game I remember watching was the San Fran/Denver Super Bowl... I liked the Broncos uniforms, so they were my team... They had a nice run in the early 90'smaking the playoffs, ('93 was DEVASTATING, my cousin was a Raiders fan and they beat us in week 17 to make the playoffs, then again the next week in the opening round! I cried!) and then had a 7-9and 8-8 season. '96 came and we lost to Jacksonville in that classic Brunnel performance, once again I cried. Then we won the 'Bowl 2 years in a row... Living in a small town full of Chiefs fans, I f*cking loved it. All of my friends were Chiefs fans and I got to rub it in their face. The long and short of it is, I have quite the emotional connection t the Broncos and if you don't feel that way about Dallas then f*ck it, drop 'em man... But I can tell you that the moment Green Bay went for it on 4th down and came upshort... Good lord, that and Benoit winning the strap at WMXX might be the happiest 2 moments of my life. I swear, if Elway ever kills his family and himself someones going to find me hanging in a closet somewhere. Brad Did you ever watch True Detective?! T R W hahahahaha! I just saw that you replied while I was typing... Hehehe

So I guess I can't ever see myself not pulling for them. What I may do is just pick up a team from the other conference that I can support and I guess if it ever came down to Dallas vs that other team I'd have to go for Dallas. Lol
