Just thinking back to my childhood, here in Cleveland we got a pretty equal balence of WWF & NWA/WCW programing. I have two images of Ricky Steamboat etched in my mind, WWF Intercontinental champion in white tights & NWA WHC in green tights. Just wondering which Steamboat you guys tend to regard as the best. Or even narrow it down to WM3 or Chi-Town Rumble 89.

NWA Champion. He had a great match with Savage but everything else was very forgettable...His matches with Flair were some of the best ever...not just one but every match he had they tore the house down.

I'm sure he'll be better remembered as NWA Champion but I always see him as Intercontinental Champion. That's probably because I was always a WWF guy growing up though.

To me, Steamboat is a WCW guy.
When I think of Ricky, I think of the NWA Title, the WCW TV Titles he won, the Tag Title reigns with Dustin and Douglas, the US Title matches with Austin.
He was a WWE Superstar, but his IC Title reign lasted 2 months I think. It wasn't long.
He will always be a WCW/NWA guy to me.

Apart from watching vhs tapes, because I was born in 1992 Steamboat was before my time.
So to me I'll remember him most as "The Dragon" in his 1991 run, the six man tag from Summerslam 1991 is a favorite of mine. I also had his Hasbro figure in the same attire, so that was definitely how I will always think of him.

@cabbageconkers I can understand that, it was a cool reinvention of his character, perhaps a lilbit too gimmicky with all the fire breathing for my taste. hbkbigdaddycool Agreed. Steamboat did have some excellent matches with Steve Austin during his 92 wCw run.

He was still Ricky Steamboat after all. I loved the entrance attire. It was very cool.

Can't go wrong with either really.
I wanna say IC champion because the match with Savage was so good. But we got 3 great matches with Flair as opposed to just 1 with Savage, so I gotta go with NWA World Champion. Just wish Steamboat's reigns would have been as great as his title victories.

Those matches with Flair were unreal....BUT his reigns lacked. He was a better challenger than Champ. Vince never really forgave Steamboat over the IC title incident in 1987.....he held onto that grudge for a LONG time folks.

The only solece that can be found in that situation is that the man who beat him went on to perhaps be the greatest intercontinental champion of all time. It's hard to imagine if it went to plan and Butch Reed got the strap from Steamboat, as it was Reed booked to get the belt, but he no showed and it went to HTM.

Yeah I dunno about this Butch Reed plan. Reed himself says that he wasn't in line for it and the rumoured that he no showed that event is untrue. He can be seen in the background celebrating with Honky & the other heels. And theres no solace IMO for Steamboat....McMahon was malicious about it. He had Steamboat beaten by a comedy wrestler.....for spite. He had zero clue at the time how over Honky would get as a heel.....

Then he comes back and gets jobbed out in round 1 of the WM4 world title tournament...

Vince felt slighted because he had given Steamboat this massive honor/opportunity and he flung it back in his face..... Ive watched loads of shoots with guys who spoke about this and they all said this was the way Vinnie seen it. He did something similar with One Man Gang turning him into Akeem.

Speaking of Akeem, there's a brand new demolition shoot out there, and they said that demolition vs twin towers was booked solid to be a year long program, with the Towers winning the straps, but things were so hot back stage between Akeem & Bossman not being able to get along that they scrapped the whole thing, and Arn & Tully had just came into New York at the time and they ended up getting the straps instead of the twin towers.

JokerFCDang I just watched it two days ago on YouTube and its already gone it was pretty good, hour long shoot. Basically a timeline of demolition 87-91. Alot of the stuff we already know Randy Cooley this that and the other some inside info like the Towers story, and their opinions on turning face and back to heel (they hated it) they wanted to stay heel from the word go. Bill pushing Luscious Johnny out of the group in favor of Fuji. Barry still has a chip on his shoulder about the chair shot from Tully that cracked his skull. Really liking Bryan Adams as a person but hating him in demolition. The misconception of them being a Road Warriors ripoff, stating that it is something that was never said during their run, and is an internet creation after the fact. They said they could work and have great believable matches with everyone from the rockers, arn & tully to the twin towers & powers of pain, whereas L.O.D could only go out there and squash everyone. And Vince not letting them out of their contracts when Demolition had become a total joke because he wanted to kill them off so they couldn't work anywhere else, I.E. getting squashed at WM7 against two NJPW wrestlers bc Vince knew they had a good offer on the table to go to Japan and fued with Hansen & Vader.

Good question. For the longest time he was WWF IC Champ Steamboat to me.. and I kinda disregarded his WCW run. After becoming a more well rounded fan I gotta go WCW. I guess partially that was due to me not being a Flair fan (respect, but he's not my guy) and loving Savage.

NWA champ, slightly edging out IC champ if only because of the calibre of matches he had with Flair.

JokerFC It was with a dude I'm not too familiar with, heavy Boston accent in a studio with a talk show vibe to the interview.
