I'm a professional artist as well, but I really don't see a problem with someone making a copy of someone's piece to get it signed.
What is he supposed to do, contact the artist to let him know he is going to go meet Sting and he wants to make a copy of his painting to get signed? What's the artist going to say? "No, you have to buy a copy from me.", just to have the guy turn around and print it out anyway?
I draw Spiderman, Batman, etc. almost every day, and if someone took the time to contact me letting me know they were going to make a copy to be signed by (Let's say) Andrew Garfield, Christian Bale, etc. at a con or something, I'd (first) find it flattering because, out of all the art out there, this guy chose mine, and (second) might think the guy was a little weird for making such a big deal out of it. If I put it on the internet, I know it's going to be used for something... somewhere down the line.
True, we artists are taken for granted more often than not, but I don't own Spiderman, much like this artist isn't Sting, so I don't really see how I, or any other artist, would have a legal leg to stand on in a case like this anyway. If pics of these prints are on the web, I can almost guarantee Sting has signed one printed off at Kinkos before.
Does this artist give a percentage of his sales to Sting? If not, then the only person who should be complaining about all this should be Sting! I am no computer genius, but isn't there a way a pic can be displayed without being able to click and copy onto a desktop or other device? I know that I have right clicked on certain pics for sale on sites before to save and blow up for a better look, but got a warning letting me know they were the sole property of the owner or artist and couldn't.
If this was a big deal to the artist, I'm sure he'd save his work in a way so everyday viewers wouldn't be able to make copies to begin with.
That's just my opinion though.
BTW... I'd go for the darker, brooding Crow style Sting. That second one has a lot going on and his signature, if done with a bright paint pen or silver Sharpie style pen, would pop a lot more on the darker image without all that color. Again, just my opinion.
Short and sweet, it's just common courtesy. EDIT: Now, I might be overthinking the OP's actions, but hopefully he does buy whichever piece he chooses. If not, then my vent still stands. "common courtesy" is dead nowadays anyway isn't it? lol
I can completely understand where you are coming from as well.
Can I ask, what type of art do you do? It's always nice to have correspondence with another artist.

I like the first image better honestly. And it works better if Crow Sting is your favorite. Otherwise the second is nice cause of its bigger scope.

$25 won't kill you. Don't print someone else's work without purchasing a reproduction, or contacting the owner. That's just not right at all. I should know. I'm an artist and people don't give artists the credits we deserve. People take us for granted whether that is for music, paintings, or anything else involved in the art industry. No i completely understand. The second one will be ordered from Rob's store. The first isn't available yet, otherwise id buy it straight from him

I'd go with the first one, primarily because that's how he's going to look when you meet him.

I don't think there's a wrong answer, but personally I like the second a bit more.

It sure seems like it, haha. I do graphic design, and I also play music. Drums, guitar, and piano. $25 won't kill you.
