Alright, so I'm working on a band project, and I was wanting to know what is the best type of transportation to and from shows and for mini tours? Keep in mind we're only gonna be a 4 person band, and all the equipment. I want to stay in a budget of $5K. Any help is much appreciated!

with a basic drum kit & sound equipment...you kind of need a small trailer attached to a vehicle - there's not really any way around it because you have to have something safe enough for bad weather (for the equipment...can't just load it in a truck bed) and something that can be locked when you're eating/sleeping

from my experience what usually goes down is that if you're traveling to a different city for a show you'll contact the other bands playing the gig and sort out with them who's responsible for bringing drums (usually have to bring your own breakables - cymbals, snares, etc) and if it's possible to share amps (depending on styles/requirements). that's why often people in bands prefer amps with cabinets/heads, as they can just bring their heads when traveling and use the home guitarist's amp.
that's not always possible, and when it's not, you're going to need something larger than a typical family van. renting a van is an option, depending on your pay per gig/amount of dates you're planning to do as a mini tour. either way, networking with other bands is always a great way of cutting down the weight (literally!) of having to bring amps and full drum sets around. in most band circles this is considered a norm, so if you were planning a mini tour, you'd contact all the bands that you planned to play with on that tour and sort out the equipment before any dates so that everyone is prepared and aware of their responsibilities.
have fun!

If you're near Cali, hit these dudes up. A few of my friends that are in a band that live in CA say these guys are great: www.bandvan.com/If you're like me, my band uses a Chevy Express 3500. Don't buy anything Ford, they break down VERY easily if you travel long distances. Our trailer varies from each tour. Oh, depending on your area, Craigslist can be useful. That's where we bought our van. There was no problems with the van either.

I must only know selfish musicians and have been a selfish musician myself but I've never heard of sharing equipment & never would have myself.... especially with my drummer that I played with...if anyone got close to touching his kit - he'd get furious - his second kit cost like 4,000 & he'd never have let it get worn down from 3-4 drummers a night

Isn't a rite of passage of being in a band buying and travelling in a van?

There's no way you shouldn't be able to get way with something like an E350 or similar. The last band I was in never bothered to tour (and I could give you a whole other the read on my thoughts on young bands touring), but whenever we'd venture out to a show that didn't warrant five separate cars (or six, when we were rocking three guitarists for some reason), we managed to pack everything into a conversion van. Wouldn't be a smooth ride for extended trips, but for an hour or so out, you make do.
I also never realized that there were a multitude of bands out there unwilling to share in a back line setup. In all my years and all my bands, I've met one other band that vehemently opposed it. They were the same band that came up to our frontman after their set (with three bands left to play) at a DIY show we'd setup from the ground up and asked to be paid. Every other band played for free, but these divas needed their dues, I guess. They'd also already packed their things, and as soon as we scrounged together ten bucks to get them off our backs, they were gone as gone could be.
Guess it says something about the approach. They got kinda big, but I'll always have that story to share.

Thanks for the advice guys, and I want to clear something up: Someone earlier said that the mini-tour we're gonna be with other bands, not neccasarily. I mean, taking gigs as one band in let's say Louisville, then Lexington, then Bowling Green and Owensboro (I live in KY) in one week/weekend, not like a full blown tour with an opening act and such like that.

Wait, you're not going to be playing with other bands? Maybe it's just me, but that seems way unusual. Even around here, the biggest draws still pack in at least a three band bill. Even if you're not touring in tandem with one or two specific bands, I'd still imagine you'd be sharing a bill (you+band x+band y in one town, you+band z+band01 in the next), and it would still possibly be to the benefit of all to contact those bands ahead of time and arrange a back line. It saves you cargo space, and saves all the bands breakdown and setup time in between sets.

Sorry about the confusion. It could work, I don't know if the band will be too hospitable, but just incase, I'd like a vehicle that can go the distance and carry the load.

I was asking which is best. Hey! I'm an actor! What camera should I use to take my headshot with? Which is best? Canon or Nikon? That's what I meant.

Those Transit vans are sweet, too. I'd be all over that if I were in a touring band.
Off topic, but the thing in havingtroue with is the fact that it sounds like this project is barely off the ground and you're already planning tours. I've seen that serve as the stake through the heart of so many up and coming bands and yet they all follow that same path and I just don't get it.
