should've just given the AL MVP to Corey Kluber too whats the point then? why as a batter am i putting in 162 if i can just pitch good 25 games and win it I'm assuming it's because without Kershaw, the Dodgers likely wouldn't have made the playoffs, and as such, he was the most valuable player to that team. I don't agree with it, but I'm assuming that's it.

Pirates sign AJ Burnett.
It's been real, Liriano. But unless you lower your asking price that's your cue that you're out, same as Cervelli was Martin's.
I'm just happy, even if he sucks, there will be someone other than Gerritt Cole on the mound. I was getting worried we were gonna have to throw him out there 162 times next season.

Stanton is about to sign for THIRTEEN INGYEARS. Kershaw deserved the MVP, he impacted more batters than McCutchen or Stanton had at bats. I am a McCutchen fanboy but I am okay with Kershaw this year. Wish King Felix won in the AL tho

Thirteen years? Well, he'll be a Yankee soon enough then.

Finally got some defense out in center, Rajai is passable but Gose is overall solid defensively. Worried about the farm system because our top prospect could only get a potential platoon center fielder. Not too promising.

Blue Jays have signed C Russell Martin to a 5-year, $82M contract.
Atlanta Braves have traded OF Jason Heyward and RHP Jordan Walden to the St. Louis Cardinals for SP Shelby Miller & RHP Tyrell Jenkins.

TRW what do you think? Overall a change of scenery trade here but if Miller gets his crap together you have an ace.
Heyward needed out too, as long as hes healthy I think the crapty Cards can get a lot more out of him

I'm ok with it. Heyward couldn't stay healthy, and while he was awesome in the field, his power and offense never came around like it was supposed to for whatever reason. I'm fine with moving on, since all indications were that he wanted a big contract. I'll miss him though. We did need the pitching, but man we REALLY need some offense, and I have no idea where that is going to come from. Is Heyward going to reach his potential or is he Jeff Francouer? I was definitely weary about giving him a big contract. I just hope we can pay someone to take BJ Upton or Chris Johnson.
I still wish Fredi was gone.

A little sad to see J. Heyward go, but I don't think he is ever going to develop into a superstar, at least he wasn't here. All of our promising prospects (hitters) turn out to be flops for the most part.
Great that we added a pitcher, but we still need hitting. Need to take the time to rebuild in reality.

The Martin deal was horrible. It's one year past what anyone should have been willing to give him and he's going to be making $16m at 37. As a Cubs fan, I feel like we dodged a bullet. Plus, I still think last year was an anomaly year for him. If he can avg a 750 OPS over that contract I'll be blown away. I could have dealt with him at $64 and 4, knowing the last year or so would be a bust, but no thanks on the 5 years at over $16.
The Jason Heyward trade only makes me angry because of where he went honestly. His Rtot is 30. That makes him an absolute beast on defense. Even without his bat coming completely around, which I still don't believe is 100% developed, the guy is a solid 5-6 WAR. That's crazy value at what the Braves were paying him. The Braves couldn't keep him though because they aren't going to pay after next year, and they got a really good prospect and a legit 3, but I thought Heyward would be a Brave for 15 or so years. I think, given the circumstances, it worked out for both teams. Even with the health, if he gives the Cardinals a WAA around 5 for close to 140 games, the trade falls in their favor imo.

I concur. I think that's too much money for Russell Martin. I also feel that Giancarlo Stanton got too much.

Wow, the Jays REALLY messed up on that deal. Martin isn't even that good. They'll regret that deal before the first year is over, and that is not going to be movable via trade.
Heyward, however, I'm indifferent on right now. Miller is a good young pitcher, but Heyward has a lot of potential himself. As a Mets fan, I'm glad to see him leave.

You're a Mets fan, you have no sense of what's a "good" player. Kidding aside, Martin IS good though. Worth that long at his age? Hell no. But capitalize now while the iron's hot. He'll be solid for at least two, maybe three years before he pitfalls to God awful.

I've seen him have his moments, but not enough of them to warrant that deal. Ahem, we DO have DeGrom, Lagares, Harvey, Murphy, Syndergaard, Duda and Wright! We have some good pieces! We're just kind of...missing...anything that resembles an offense. Cuddyer could help us out there if he's healthy.

people were saying Russell Martin was crap when he was on the Yankees and he was only going to get worse etc.
he's a solid catcher. bottom line. only a year older than mccann....a year ahead in contract. he's been relatively healthy his whole career. i mean if the going rate for an experienced catcher who can hit average, sprinkle in some RBIs and HRs and call a great game with the pitching staff is 5/$80....it kind of makes sense to be honest.
plus its not like Martin has been playing since he's 21. He's only 9 season in, while mccann has 10
i was just surprised because i thought the Blue Jays had a good catcher already in Navarro. but whatever the Jays are like the mini-yankees now load up on "stars" and get nowhere. they just aren't spending as much

I concur. I think that's too much money for Russell Martin. I also feel that Giancarlo Stanton got too much. The Stanton deal is insane. The Marlins bribed him with every incentive possible. No trade, opt-out, guaranteed 25m figure through all of his declining years in his 30s. They are going to get amazing production for 5-7 years but they honestly better hope he ops out, which is probably what they are thinking. Stanton at 8 years $200m is an amazing deal imo, it's those post 32 years on that 13 year deal that should scare the sh*t out of Marlins fans, all 10 of them. The Marlins did what they had to do but man does it look crazy to everyone but the Yankees and Red Sox who were sitting around waiting for him. He's not going to win in Miami, so I expect him to get his $150 million or so and then sign a bigger deal come 2020 at 7 or 8 years, assuming he stays on pace. Stanton is set though either way, worst case scenario he rides that deal into the ground.

Massive deals to both Stanton and Martin. Martin is a solid catcher, but I don't think he's worth 5 years $82 million. Cubs probably dodged overpaying for a solid catcher. Stanton deal is just insane. Franchise player for Miami without a doubt, now he has the major deal to prove it.
Avila is coming back next year. I really don't know how long he'll last both with the Tigers and in the league. He takes a beating behind the dish. Still don't think Scherzer will sign. Selfishly, I'd like him to become a Cub so I can still root for him, but he'll get a big contract from any team that chooses to sign him.

Stanton and Martins deals are both back loaded, Stanton can opt out in 6 years. I dont get the outrage, read the details fellas. It kills the Marlins if he gets hurt and just sucks but as long as hes healthy, we know that wont happen. Smart move for Stanton.
Martin is a little bit more complicated but again the deal is backloaded. So the Jays can go out and sign more guys and deal with whatever happens later....later. 99% of all the big contracts suck, only one I can remember totally working was Manny Ramirez.
Jays needed a great catcher for their young arms, they paid for it. Stanton is a multiple time MVP winner if hes healthy.
