I think he kinda got screwed with the ref gimmick, and they never knew what to do with him after that. He could have been one of the best weasel heel midcarders they've ever had.

Guy is crazy talented. Listen to anyone who was in NXT with him talk about the guy. He's got an extremely rare gift in front of the camera imo. I don't think anything he ever did on the main roster let him demonstrate that gift but he seemingly had it from a charisma standpoint. His stuff in FCW/NXT was pretty much comedy gold. It's not like he's a super tiny guy either. I would have loved to see WWE at least give him a try as an actual worker.
I think he could have been a Heenan type of character as a manager or even commentator. At minimum try it out with him. Shame if this is true if you ask me.

But, why the hell was he a referee? Because WWE didn't think Punk could draw against Rock without the 434 day reign, and they needed a way to keep the belt on Punk in the cell. So they came up with the crappy crooked ref gimmick. |

Edit. Maddox was doing the "lost in a cave" videos back in JULY how the  have people not realized he was on the alumni page since before then.... He was "fired" on May 19th, and I'm pretty sure someone reported on this board his profile was moved to Alumni. was it actually put back there a couple of weeks ago? i don't remember seeing it |
