Hey everyone.
Im writing a paper on the toy collecting culture and was looking for some help with answers to contribute as to why we collect and we collect loose or MOC.
What lines do you collect?
Do you collect loose or MOC? Why?
What got you into collecting?

I collect mostly for nostalgia, TMNT is my #1, mostly because it's what I loved when I was a kid. And I mostly do MOC because I think it displays well in the packaging and holds value, although loose is more fun lol

I collect the DBZ figuarts line and I open them, because they are meant to be displayed. To me collecting MOC can be boring and can make you loose interest unless you plan on selling. Also you're not enjoying the figure by just looking at it when it's MOC you might as well not buy it and just look at a picture of it.

I collect mostly WWE figures and then movie & tv figures. I collect loose for space purposes. I just have so much stuff that it wouldn't even be reasonable to keep everything MOC. Plus, even though I don't play with anything I do like to be able to handle them and see them up close. It's really part of owning the figure imo. I like packaging and all but not enough that I won't open something. If I really want to keep something MOC I get two.
I got into collecting at pretty much birth I guess. I was always an action figure kid. I had a ton of Kenner toys, Ghostbusters, Beetlejuice, Starting Lineup and I always just liked figures of movies or cartoons I liked. Tons of He-man and Turtles stuff, Visionaries, Bravestarr, Swamp Thing, James Bond Jr. haha. I got into WWF collecting when the BCA stuff came out. I had a few Hasbro figures but I started buying my own WWF figures when I was 10-12. So I've done Star Wars and WWE for more than 20 years, on-and-off. I just never grew out of it. My parents also both facilitated it as my dad has always collected pins and stuff on his own so he used to help me hunt stuff for a big portion of my childhood and teen years.
When I went to college and then grad school I really kind of stopped, sans a few figures here and there. It was really Mattel getting the WWE line that sucked me back in full swing. I picked up E1 CM Punk on 1/1/10 and it just fed right into my addiction again. I think companies are going back and doing a lot of the stuff that was popular when I was younger, so like the Funko line with Rocketeer, Goonies, The Crow, etc. and that really feeds into the nostalgia factor for me. I think we all love stuff that appeals to our childhood and takes us back to that time.
I don't know, if there was just something I liked I always wanted figures of it. I see a movie or show, I want my favorite characters in figure form. I like an athlete, get me his figure. It's just how I am.

I collect Marvel Legends/Select (for larger characters) and DC Classics/Direct. The reasoning behind my collection should be evident: I've been reading comics for roughly 35 years.
There was a time when I was strictly a MOC collector, but I've shifted to loose collecting over the last few years. Not only does this save space so I can keep collecting, I began to see the effects of tight packaging on articulated joints. 90% of my collection is kept in Detolf cabinets now.

I collect both. I usually keep certain Hot Wheels cars MOC, such as treasure hunt cars and movie cars

Unless there's a special reason not to open them, I do. I currently have 6 toys I'm keeping on card. The SDCC crazy 88 Tarantino on card, as well as a green lantern signed by Mart Nodell, The Captain Action Flash Gordon and Ming, The SDCC Batusi Batman, and 60s Batman and robin two pack. The latter four are because of how cool they look in the box. Plus with the Batman stuff I have the regular figures loose, to the boxed ones behind them looks nice. I also have an extra penguin on card, but I'm not sure where he is.
One thing I'm still debating myself on are the Funko ReAction figures. I got my first three recently and I want to open them, but the package is so much a part of how cool they look I don't know if I want to mess with that. So for now they are still carded.
