Summer of 2004, when his rhymes became corny and he started using props.

I'm not going to lie, I think of the eras of HHH followed by Cena as some sort of nightmarish dimension X. I do respect both of them, for s sake Cena does leg drops of the top rope and had some great matches, but I cannot swallow the sneakers and jean shorts, just awful, all those memorable moments feature a goof in jorts. I think of tradition as meaning something in wrestling, like wiping your boots on the mat before entering the ring. All the other wrestlers put on their ridiculous patent leather boots and spandex and Cena is too good for it? I think he always laughs when someone brings it up and says he can't imagine himself in tights, way to bury decades of wrestling attire. If he actually wore long tights ala Sting and boots I think lots of older fans could embrace him easier. Am I saying I want to see Cena's shapely ass and legs? Not really, I just feel his attire is a kayfabe killer for me. Edit: But to answer the question, I noticed them right away in his debut vs Angle. Lots of potential, good look, sloppy in the ring. Then that damn Vanilla Ice nonsense. I do think he ramped his wrestling up at some point around the Punk feud so credit there, also the HBK matches.

When I see people draw comparisons to Hogan in the WWF compared to Cena... Here is what I think of most.
Hogan put his opponents over in promos. He made you think he could be beaten. He told stories with his eyes. He took beat downs. He sold both in promos and during the build up to the matches.
Cena basically does none of that.

I think Cena would look better in tights and wrestling boots but it won't happen.

I've hated him from the moment WWE made him "the guy". I respect him the person but his character is one of the all time worst. He's not a man, he is a little boy in a man's body. He wears sneakers, tells everyone how much he respects them all the time. smiles every time that people criticize him, spraypaints "JBL is poopy" etc. He's just not a man, which is why every guy over the age of 15 boos him every time they see him. Hogan, Austin, Rock, Triple H, HBK, Taker....all of the all time greats stood up for themselves, and if you ever screwed one of them over you knew the next night they were going to go out there and raise hell. They didn't praise their opponents all the time during their promos, they promoted themselves. Plus Cena is the first wrestler that was ever shoved down people's throats like this. All of those people mentioned before got over because the fans wanted them over. Fans have been booing Cena for ten years and yet he has been the only guy in the top spot for that entire time. None of those guys above ever got booed to this extent because fans were entertained by them. We have expressed time and time again that Cena isn't that entertaining and yet our boos are for no reason. He is the only wrestler that has ever gotten this treatment for this amount of time. Honestly I think Cena (not by his fault, but the company's fault) is the reason that WWE is putting such a poor product out now. They have put so much focus on him at the expense of tons of great up and comers to the point where they haven't had any other top good guys for ten years and currently don't have any lined up. In all honesty, the company is going to be better off once Cena finally leaves. I respect the guy, but his character has ruined the WWE in my opinion.

Yeah, a lot of this has to do with how wrestling is presented now as opposed to what it was like back then, but I always did get the impression that Hogan treated his matches as a life-and-death struggle, and by the end, even though he'd ultimately kick out of his opponents' finishers and steamroll them to win, he looked like he'd been through a war. He'd be dripping with sweat, beet red, and often bloodied. Sometimes Cena doesn't look like he's even broken a sweat and he's usually bouncing around the ring as if he just got there. Almost every small thing about Cena upsets me as a wrestling fan. A lot of the big things, too.

When I got back into wrestling at the end of 2003 I was not impressed with John Cena. I disliked his rapper gimmick; real reason for that is because I don't like rap. I still did not like him when he was transitioning to be the next WWE Champion. That being said, I have to admit he's a hard worker and does amazing things with kids. His wrestling abilities are average. Like people say he does do the same stuff all the time (cliche I know).
