Crow Sting. Based on a character created in 1989, represented from a movie that was, albeit a Cult Classic, released in 1994, during a time when WWF's rising top babyface was a beer drinking, ass-kicking, sh*t talking redneck. Sting didn't talk or wrestle for a ing year during a time when we had a Springer-obsessed society. It never should have worked and it was the most over Sting was in his entire career and generated the biggest PPV in WCW history. It was a total character 180 but he was still a babyface. And it was all based on the fact that Sting was the one guy that the nWo hadn't flattened......and people BELIEVED he would KILL Hogan when he got him. Then we got Starrcade 97........and Superbrawl 98. Jesus Christ Bischoff .

So true, why would a rich dude team with the IRS lol, it never made any sense but it worked Yup... one of my all-time favorite tag teams. The millionaire wants the irs on his side so he can fudge the numbers and keep him from paying taxes!

I'd say Sandman, but he isn't really a character. Why he shouldn't've worked? He sucks in the ring, drunk all the time, below average on the mic and did I mention he's terrible in the ring? Yet he got main event feuds, was massively over with the ECW crowd, and won the world championship 5 times. Hurricane is a good example that I don't think was brought up. Here we have a pretty good wrestler in Gregory Helms, and they dress him up like a superhero. And he makes the most of it, and gets incredibly over while looking like a million bucks. Public Enemy. They were chocolate shark in the ring. Their promos are cheesy af. Their gimmick wasn't even that good, but with the help of Heyman they somehow became the top tag team from 94-95.
That's what immediately comes to mind for me.

Undertaker-Who knew that Mean Mark working at a funeral home would go on to become the biggest legend of Wrestlemania? John Cena-Every wrestler who had a rapping gimmick never got over, but Cena made it work
Boogeyman-It was silly, but he was popular for a couple of years Demolition-They were seen as Road Warrior-ripoffs in S&M gear, but they were one of the all-time greatest WWF tag teams Somewhere P.N.News is crying in jealousy. Cena has to be the biggest example though. His gimmick started off as a joke on a Halloween episode of Smackdown and it's lasted this long. Sadly not only has it lasted but he is the top guy now. It's a very dark time in Pro wrestling. HBK's gimmick is also incredibly lame. WWF went from Big Muscular Men who were all about being tough. "The Immortal" Hulk Hogan, "The MACHO Man" Randy Savage, "The Ultimate Warrior", and then we got HBK the "Boy toy". It was a complete 180. We went from men who prided themselves on being tough to a guy who prided himself on being delicate. From his intro where he declared himself a boy toy and sexy boy, to his in ring prancing, to his out of the ring posing in adult gay mens magazines. And why did the WWF do that? Regardless, it was the best way to go and it opened up the door to many more opportunities.

HonkyTonkMan...I started watching wrestling in Jan 1987. I was young...15 and had no idea who Elvis was or the Colonel. Jimmy Hart was the Colonel etc. Years later I finally figured out it was all about Elvis. I must had been living in a cave!

Bret Hart & Shawn Michaels should be the top 2 names on the list. Like as was previously mentioned we had "manly men" as world champions building up to the early 90s and then BOOM, all of the sudden we have a guy who wears hot pink and a guy who acts like a stripper as Champion. Both have a crapton of ring talent but the more I look back on things, I can see why the New Generation era was one of the lowest points in wrestling.

True Story... When I was younger, my Dad and I would always watch wrestling together. Dad was also a huge Elvis fan. One day I walked into the living room while he was watching some sort of special on Elvis and the first thing I said was "That guy's totally ripping off The Honky Tonk Man". Dad bust out laughing for about five minutes before he could explain to me who Elvis was and that HTM was actually a parody of him.

For the short term, I'd say Eugene. He was pretty hot in the summer of 2004. No kidding. It is crazy how over Eugene was. I know I liked him a lot. He was funny and his matches were entertaining

Saying Kane does make a lot of sense.
Everything about him was so closely tied to The Undertaker, and if any other person played the Kane character it's hard to say if the character would of lasted past 1998. But Glen/Kane made it work so well, and he has had an amazing evolution that truly separated him away from The Undertaker. Sure they mention that they are Kayfabe Brothers quite frequently, and they have feuded dozens of times, but what I'm saying is Kane's moveset evolved, as did his character to the point that he's not just some guy who needs to rely on Taker's likeness.

Shawn Michaels hands down. Today he would've been doomed on the lower card with his sexy boy gimmick but he ended up being one of the greatest of all time back in the day.

I don't ever remember him having a gimmick he just seemed to be like an ordinary no nonsense wrestler who mainly cared about winning world titles.
The new generation had many weird characters but Bret stood out as being a proper wrestler who had no day job gimmick.

Bret wasnt necessarily a "character" but his look originally was, odd. Over time it was over looked as were many things but if I told you a guy with "greasy" hair wearing hot pink with hearts all over it and pink goggles (realistically they didnt look like sunglasses) would hold the same title as guys like Bruno Sammartino, Billy Graham, Hulk Hogan and the Ultimate Warrior...you'd probably raise your eyebrows a little.

definitely the 3MB
it is as goofy as it can get; yet Slater, McIntyre, and Mahal made it work
