I noticed when I went out shopping on Monday that the prices at Walmart and Target had gone up, strangely the elite prices at my TRU had dropped.. anyone else see that happen? Elites are $16.99 at my TRU, but they have been since I started collecting a few months ago. Geoffrey is a closet WWE fan. His favorite superstars are Sheamus and Alberto Del Rio.

Remember when Mattel said prices would never go up? Then they tried to blame it on the stores? They raised the prices of Elites on MattelShop to 19.99.
This is starting to get really out of hand. I don't know how they expect anybody to be able to afford this. GAS prices are going down, but Mattel TOY prices are going up.
Ridiculous. They should be embarrassed.

I see where you're coming from but in this case gas and toy prices don't have anything to do with each other.

Gas prices and toy prices are not directly connected to one another, but one would think that if it is possible to LOWER gas prices, then it should also be possible to at least PREVENT toy prices from raising so dramatically? Unless Mattel is more greedy than the gas companies.......

Gas prices at the moment are as low as they are because of way too much supply while demand stayed the same. You can't really compare the two right now.

Gas prices at the moment are as low as they are because of way too much supply while demand stayed the same. You can't really compare the two right now. The cost of production in China has increased steadily over the last 3-5 years. You're seeing it heavily with textiles across the board due to increased prices for cotton as well. Companies are trying to combat higher production costs by increasing the price of their products. I worked for an apparel company not that long ago and we essentially decided it was worth it to us to eat a dollar(s) on the profit in order to not raise the msrp, so forecasting volume/sales over a quarter(s)/year. I think what is happening with Mattel is that the prices are becoming more expensive for them and they are just passing the buck, or at least I would guess. The stores are likely passing the buck as well, making it more expensive to the end consumer. Either that, or somewhere along the line someone is getting greedy, which happens as well. I think the cost of toys has seen a really significant increase over the last 5 years or so, like unnatural growth even with normal inflation. It's not just Mattel WWE, action figures and toys in general have gotten expensive. Legos are crazy, Star Wars, Marvel, I would say the standard price for a quality 6" figure now is $20. That sucks, especially for people like myself and us collectors that buy stuff from multiple lines and try and keep up. Game of Thrones Legacy, WWE Elites, Walking Dead, Star Wars Black, TMNT Classics, anything NECA or Mezco, I mean I love having all of this stuff available and I want so much of it, but even just going from $10-15 a figure to $15-20 is making a huge difference on how much I can collect. Toys are an elastic good though, so there will come a time when the bubble bursts and everyone will need to take a step back imo.

Companies are trying to combat higher production costs by increasing the price of their products. That's it in a nutshell. The world is changing, and it SHOULD change. A big part of the reason the cost of production in China has increased steadily over the last 3-5 years is because wages and benefits have increased steadily over the last 3-5 years in addition to factories implementing safer working conditions. I try to keep that in mind when I see the price of my toys increase. It's not always easy being a self-centered bastard by nature, but I try.

This is getting crazy. I only collect flashbacks but that may change also The Only Elites I buy are flashbacks and that's usually one per set so It doesn't bother me that much

$20 Elites is a bit stiff. If I can save $20+ at the gas pump with lower prices why are toys costing me more? This hobby has its downfalls

I used to buy just about every elite twice, one to open the other to keep moc, I stopped doing that when elites prices rose beyond 16.99. Now I only do that with the flashbacks.
By the way, doesn't the price of gas directly affect the cost of goods? I figured production and transportation involve the consumption of oil.

A guy from Mattel even says it does in the quote below from 2011. In 1 to 3 years, toys should be either cheaper, or have things like better accessories and paint. Unless the toy makers know we'll keep buying despite the price.

I was surprised the basic sale lasted as long as it did at Walmart. I am also not surprised by the price increase on Elites. This is going to be the year of tough choices and a leaner collection.

I've given up on retail around me. Between WF's Classifieds, RSC, and Amazon Prime I get everything I need.

This means i will be even more picky about the elites i buy. This pretty much sums it up for me, I already am buying ONLY the ones I really want - I have to heavily consider which ones to buy with each wave, as I cannot afford to buy them all. Even higher prices mean I'll have to be even more selective..... and I rarely buy two of anything anymore (used to buy an extra to keep MOC quite often). Also, another reason I've been favoring Basics over the last year!
