No cursing, racism, etc. That stuff goes at the door. Certain arenas (looking at you, Scottrade Center) have some real pricks at the door who will give you grief for things WWE is perfectly fine with, especially if you don't happen to be a hot chick.
No following, @twitters, @instagrams, etc. That might make it through the doors but WWE officials will likely take it when you hold it up, unless they don't see it. Same goes for other wrestling promotions, Benoit, blatant Punk references, bring back anyone who was released, etc. If you go to enough shows, you'll get to know the sign confiscator guy quite well even if you don't deliberately try to be offensive.
My rule of thumb for sign making is... try to make something that a) you think people watcheing the show on TV would get some enjoyment from seeing and b) is relavent to the show/ppv/product/wrestlers in some way.
Oh, and be considerate of those around you at the show... as in don't hold up something constantly or throughout matches.

I never understood why people just don't bring blank bristol board and a sharpie with them, and then write out what they want to say then and hold it up in the crowd. It would save them from taking away your signs at the door.

That way people could make a sign that is prohibited. Checking them at the door makes sense
I was front row camera-side at the Barclay's Center in October. My friend and I had a Russian flag we put up to support Rusev during his promo prior to the Rock's surprise return, and somebody gave the word to the security next to us who told us to take it down. So I guess there are some guys they only want a specific response for.
Also I overheard the security members being told to stop people walking through the rows during matches to get on TV. And there was a guy who showed up in a full CM Punk bodysuit costume with all his tattoos painted on. They made him take it off and gave him a solid red leotard instead, which I assumed was a spare rosebud costume.

Now if you held something that said follow ______ would you get yelled at or just told to put it down?

The reprocussions depend on what exactly you try to advertise, but you're unlikely to get "yelled at" for anything unless you give officials a hard time.
Either way, the point of what I wrote before is that I don't recommend making "follow" signs at all.
