He was in and out during 1997 as Terry Funk.
He competed in the Royal Rumble and had a couple segments/matches on Shotgun Saturday Night and against Mick Foley.
I have no idea who came up with Chainsaw Charlie or why.
I think Jim Ross ended up calling him Terry Funk on commentary most of the time anyway.

There were some fears as to what Vince might do long term to "Terry Funk" and his legend status so Funk went with "Chainsaw Charlie" to diminish whatever damage Vince would have done to him.

I always assumed it was just Funk creating an alter-ego along the lines of Mick Foley's Cactus Jack. This is it 100%......I don't think anybody was going to be "fooled" into thinking this wasn't Terry Funk. It was an alter ego like Foleys 3 faces. |

Actually, Chainsaw Charlie was the original name that Terry Funk came up with for Corporal Kirchner while in Japan for IWA. He said to him, "Why not come down to the ring with a chainsaw, that would scare the hell out of the fans." Well Kirchner did do that, but as Leatherface from the Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies. So Funker used the name "Chainsaw Charlie" in the WWE then. So both Cactus and Chainsaw had 3 faces to choose from. Cactus with Cactus Jack, Dude Love and Mankind. Chainsaw with Chainsaw Charlie, Terry Funk and Flash Funk  haha I kid I kid! |

Branching off topic slightly but I never understood why Dory's name was changed to "Hoss" either. Bizarre since I would've still considered Dory the more well known of the Funks in 1985.

I always assumed it had to do with Funk's age. WWE was having a bit of a youth movement and Funk kinda went against that.

I still think it sucks that back in the BCA era that a Chainsaw Charlie figure was never created. How can we have the NAO vs. Cactus and Chainsaw then??
