I think it's because it's expensive to film or tape events or tv shows there. Apparently the WWE made almost no money and sometimes even lost money running taped shows at the garden.

It costs the WWE more to do live shows versus taped shows. Doesn't matter where the event is at. The WWE prefers to book shows at arena's where they can either break even or churn in a profit. One thing that attracted the WWF hosting WrestleMania's IV & V at Trump Plaza (Boardwalk Hall) was the Trump Organization allowed the WWF to keep 100% of the money. Doing house shows is a low risk option for the WWE. Since this is the case, the WWE doesn't have to worry about losing money when doing shows at Madison Square Garden.

How could that be the case? The WWE would make more money with a televised show over a house show that's never seen again. House shows only sell tickets but TV shows get ratings along with DVD sales.
Also the garden was a draw and everyone tuned in because you knew that you were in for an epic show.

Madison Square Garden also has its own television network which broadcasts pretty much all sporting events held in the arena. This may or may not affect how much WWE has to pay to air an event taking place there.

I don't think WWE will ever stop running the Garden, there's too much history, but evidently it stopped making sense from a business standpoint to run it like they used to. The owners of Madison Square Garden were given a ten-year operating permit which expires in 2023. The City of New York seemingly wants The Garden to relocate so they can modernize Penn Station. Having been to Penn Station on various occasions, it is a bonafide dump. Even the area where they had Shotgun Saturday Night at. That has been going on for quite some time, Jackie K Onassis somehow saved one of the buildings at some point, can't remember which one, either Penn or Grand Central. And there was an original MSG somewhere else before they moved to the current one. Huh, just read the old MSG is where the New York Life Building is, never knew that. (It was Grand Central Jackie O saved, but it related to the tearing down of the old Penn Station.) www.citylab.com/politics/2013/02/surprising-role-jackie-kennedy-playing-saving-grand-central-station/4596/Penn Station is directly under MSG for those who don't know and yea it's a dump. I do miss MSG shows on tv as well, love the front entrance, and the whole place is like a steep pit that focuses the energy down, perfect for WWE. Plus it was just always their home base arena of sorts and they have a loyal audience here.

I had no idea that they had their own channel Yea it was pretty awesome growing up, they've been playing old WWF house shows forever, before Classics on Demand I think. Was never sure how the rights on that worked. Not sure if they still play old WWF, I rarely watch tv anymore.
