The only thing I never cared for was his nWo turn. It was odd, made no sense, and served no purpose. I thought it had something to do with his connection to Scott Hall early in Hall's career. Can't quite remember but that's the explanation I thought existed, they may or may not have mentioned something on the air at the time. ***** I guess the story was always that Vince put him in polka dots to embarrass him, if he did, it didn't work on me, I liked Dusty a lot in the WWF, even going against Macho! I really liked the feuds with Macho, Dibiase, Bossman and I think HTM too. The one where I first really felt a connection was when the Bossman handcuffed him to the ropes and beat him bloody. WHEN YOU GONNA GET MAD BIG DUST? WHEN YOU GONNA GET EVEN BIG DUST? I suppose that was the same feeling as when the Horsemen broke his arm for older fans. I've seen a little here and there of his NWA career but yea I loved his WWF run, love his Legends figure. Both Ric Flair and Hulk Hogan have credited him as main inspirations which says something for sure. Hogan is like all Dusty + Graham isn't he? Goes without saying but it is incredible he did what he did looking the way he did. Just a wonderful, charming, compelling performer I always had fun watching and later listening to on WCW tv. "He kicked him in the mush, it ain't got nuttin' to do wit da mafia, Tony!!" is just one of countless hysterical lines he gave us, I'll miss him. edit: Also I thought it was the coolest thing at his HOF speech, when he took out a black and yellow polka dot handkerchief and owned it, just like he owned it during his WWF run, even it was meant to embarrass him. I think he blew his nose with it too. lol

Dusty is one of the greats. A genuine, funny, class act. We lost another legend today and it sucks. RIP.
The vignettes he was doing in WWF where he was a plumber, a sausage maker, etc. were so funny, he was a natural. So many memorable promos over the years as well.

my first actual exposure to Dusty was his time in the WWF. I knew him, knew of him, through magazines like PWI, Inside Wrestling, etc. , where I had learned - SHOCK! GASP! - there was wrestling OUTSIDE of Vince McMahon's circle ( we didn't get channels like TBS around here til early 1991, so I never saw any other promotions on TV until then). so I knew he was a former NWA world Champion when he came in. I would eventually see some of his matches by renting videos at my local Blockbuster in the early 90's, which carried a decent selection of NWA/WCW stuff - Starrcade 85, Starrcade 86, Starrcade 87, Starrcade 88, and a bunch of Great American Bash videos.

"Hard Times" is one of the best promos in Wrestling history. Great promo creator, Great wrestler, and just an incredible entertainer. R.I.P American Dream. We will miss you. Hard times just might be THE best promo of all time.

We should do a video career retrospective in here, Dusty was a very important guy. I'm no Dusty or NWA expert though, could use someone else's help. Reading through his wiki, I see some very interesting stuff right away. Started off with Murdoch as The Texas Outlaws, I knew that, but I did not know this little tidbit:
"Rhodes started his career as a rule-breaking heel, tagging with fellow Texan Dick Murdoch to form the tag team The Texas Outlaws in the American Wrestling Association. In 1974, Rhodes turned face after turning on tag team partner Pak Song and manager Gary Hart during a match in Florida against Eddie and Mike Graham. This led him to break out as a solo face superstar, primarily in Florida, referring to himself as "Stardust", the "White Soul King", and the "American Dream", a working class hero. Rhodes ascended to the top of several National Wrestling Alliance promotions, including those in Florida (where he also wrestled wearing a mask as "The Midnight Rider") and in Georgia."
Didn't realize it was a tribute by Cody, pretty damn cool! I can at least find some Texas Outlaws matches to start off.

Didn't know he had a 1977 feud with Superstar Billy Graham in the WWWF, that's awesome! Billy Graham on Dusty Rhodes feud. Florida Heavyweight Championship Tournament - 1977, referred to as Stardust! Someone else should continue if they'd like, I don't know nearly enough to credibly tell Dusty's tale.

I just wanted to share a quick personal story on Dusty:
I attended the Big Event VIII convention back on March 7th. Dusty Rhodes was scheduled to appear as a vendor guest and I anticipated his line would be quite long; keeping this in mind, I made sure to know when Dusty was scheduled to appear and, sure enough, I saw him coming in. I immediately hopped on his line and was about 5th in line. While I was waiting in line, NUMEROUS wrestlers approached Dusty just to say hello and chat a bit. I saw this throughout the day with various wrestlers interacting with one another but Dusty had, by far, the most attention from his peers. About 10 minutes of waiting in line, I met Dusty and he was an absolute class act. I was starstruck meeting such an icon.
Next to Dusty, the Dudley Boyz were scheduled to sign. D-Von was sitting at his table a lone and there was absolutely no sign of Bubba Ray, which was irritating me. I was on a strict schedule and Bubba showing up late was really grinding my gears. About 10 minutes later, this MASSIVE human being barrels through the crowd - something REALLY irksome because the room was JAM-PACKED with people and was REALLY small to begin with. This massive, rude person? Bubba Dudley. He immediately spots Dusty and says, "DUSTY RHODES! YOU ARE THE REASON I TOOK THIS BOOKING! I'M GONNA SIT NEXT TO YOU 'AND TALK LIKE DIS DA WHOLE NIGHT IF YA WHEEL!'" The room erupted with laughter and Dusty had a wide, wide smile on his face. It was just so awesome.
Hours later, I was waiting on Ric Flair's MASSIVE line. I was about 10 people away from meeting "The Nature Boy" when security interrupted the flow of the signing by pulling Flair aside. Moments later, Dusty Rhodes walked right by me and started chatting up with Flair. Apparently, a fan either paid or won a photo op with the two great 80 rivals. It was surreal to see the friendship between Flair and Rhodes and it's a memory that will stick with me forever.

Great thread and I love the comments posted by you guys.
I Will always admire Dusty for his class. The guy had swagger before swagger was a thing. He was one of the best talkers I've ever had the fortune to listen to and I will always appreciate everything he did to help the younger wrestlers out.
I love you Dusty and I hope that I can learn to be a little more like you everyday. RIP good sir.

Has there ever been someone so universally loved in wrestling as Dusty Rhodes?

The more I hear the impact Dusty Rhodes had on the industry, the more it saddens me he is gone. Hearing Scott Hall share his story had me in ****ing tears. I am glad he repaid Dusty Rhodes later in his career. It has been a few weeks since Dusty Rhodes' passing and my heart still ****ing hurts.
