I have been dying for an answer for the longest time now. I would like to ask you guys who is the #1, top superstar in WWE history? Really, is there an answer to this or is this just a matter of opinion?

Definitely a matter of opinion. Hulk Hogan, The Rock, Steve Austin, Bruno Sammartino, & John Cena have got to be top candidates though.

Depends on how you want to look at it.
Sammartino helped WWE become the top and take over the territory war and win that.
Hogan made WWE an entertainment juggernaut.
Austin/Rock helped WWE win the Monday Night Wars.
Cena has aided in keeping the product more than above water when Austin/Rock retired, not so much taking their place but trying to carry the torch.
Ultimately I would say Hogan when comparing, because the WWE might not have even been able to compete with WCW had Hogan not put them onto the pedestal that he did.
Just my take though.

There's no definitive answer. I tend to say Austin, but someone could make just as valid of a case for Hogan, Sammartino, etc.

Each era had their guy that cared wwe through their respective time period of wrestling like Hogan , Shawn micheals/undertaker, Austin/Rock , Cena , but there's really not one guy because they all had other wrestlers contributing to each era that are memorable and iconic like Macho man , Andre , warrior , Bert hart , Triple H , Brock ,Eddie, orton

Austin. He made the most money in the least time, was the most entertaining, and put the most eyes on the product.
From a kayfabe stand point, I can't see how it isn't Brock Lesnar.

Brian Pillman.
He was in a popular stable that had a high profile feud with Steve Austin then he lingered in the midcard and died. #1 in my book.

Hulk Hogan Without him most of us wouldn't be here. Yup. Even the people who hate Hogan can't deny what he did for wrestling in the 80s.

I always say Austin renovated the house Hogan built. So I'd go with one of them.

Every top star from every generation has made their own contributions to the business so their can't be no definitive #1 guy. Anyone could easily make an arguement for any well known wrestler about the title and why it should belong to them.

Go ask someone on the street about wrestling, their answer will most likely be Hogan.

Hulk Hogan or Steve Austin and whoever isn't number 1 is number 2. Cena would be a close third though.

Here's some food for thought. Many of the greatest wrestlers in the history of wrestling passed through the Capitol Wrestling Corporation turned World Wide Wrestling Federation that suddenly became less wide, & eventually stopped being a federation in order to be entertainment. However, many of them had their best matches/programs in other territories.
So the question is this. Are we talking about who is the best wrestler to ever work for WWE, or are we asking who has had the most success within the WWE?

It's debatable. For me it's between Stone Cold and Hulk Hogan (I'm not a big fan of Hogan).

from a business perspective, it's of course hulk hogan or steve austin. but from an overall 'who's number one' i'd say bret hart. had the longest tenure with the least sick days, was consistently one of if not the best match on the card, was a force in both tag team and singles wrestling, had successful heel and face runs, never badly injured an opponent, helped with a lot of younger stars. had a style that was both high impact and protective. i can't think of a better overall wrestler than bret hart.
