I was just sort of going through my "download" collection for my Playstation 3 and Xbox360/XB1, and I had noticed just how many of my favorite games I've played over the last year or so have been Telltale episodic games e.g. Walking Dead, Wolf Among Us (on the last chapter, and loved it so far), Borderlands, Game of Thrones (although it's my least favorite, I'm getting more into it as I play it more)... etc. Then there are some others that Telltale didn't make. A lot of these to me feel like modern-day point & click games that bring back memories of some of those I had played on PC many years ago, or even recently (some of them I have downloaded from Steam or Gog.com in recent times).
So I decided to instal some from Steam recently and amazingly they have been running on this old clunker of desktop w/ 1GB RAM. I forgot how good these games were, and also how bizarre at times they would get.... In hindsight, the new(er) stuff like Telltale has put out makes these games look like Manhunt on speed almost. But keep in mind, these are mostly PC games.
So I was curious if anyone else liked games of this genre, and if so what are some of your favorites? I could use suggestions if there are some fun ones out there I may have never played... I would post this in the retro board, but the revival thanks to Telltale games and others alike, not to mention stuff like Heavy Ran/Fahrenheit (Indigo Prophecy)/Beyond: Two Souls. All 3 which capture this element but in more complex ways.
One thing in common with these older games and the new ones is choices determine outcome. Here are some of my personal favorites and I'll maybe post back some tidbits about the games a little later on, or some cool screens. Most are cheap on Steam or Gog.
Harvester
This game is seriously f'd. There's a bunch of endings, different scenarios, the free ability to do most anything and in any order. You can also just run around the town of Harvest and kill everybody, or do other random play throughs. A long-play is about 5-6 hours. and worth it. There are lots of endings and in between goings-on but it is a fun game to replay and also play straight through. Note that this game is pretty gorey and violent for its time (94-96), and has cannibalism, incest, and other odd-as-hell scenarios thrown in.
Sanitarium
Similar in its weird factor to Harvester, the game wakes you up in a Sanitarium and you don't know why. Has some screwy stuff, tamer than Harvester, but still very odd. Crude 1990s graphics but it works well.
Tex Murphy: Under A Killing Moon
All Tex Murphy games for the most part are pretty damn fun. This just happens to be my favorite. It has a comical twist to the detective click+poin genre but still hangs onto that hard-boiled feeling you want from a detective game.
Blade Runner (Westwood Studios)
4 discs, tons of choices and different outcomes.... Quite possibly the finest c+p detective game of its time- and maybe ever. Way ahead of its time and I've yet to find a game like it or at least one that doesn't just copy the mold, lacking across the board. This one is completely unique and still ahead of its time.
Deja Vu 1/2: The Case Files of Ace Harding
There is a port with both of them, so I just listed both. This game pits you in Chicago for #1, solving a case after waking up with (surprise...) a bout of amnesia in a bathroom stall. From there, the case begins as you begin to figure out who you are, and how you got there. Deja Vu 2 takes place in Las Vegas and is a follow-up/sequel to the original, some years later. I haven't played it much but it holds the same fun p+c gameplay as the original.
Still Life
Like Blade Runner, this is another detective game in a league of its own. It went unnoticed by many, even with its release for the first Xbox. It is available on PC for cheap, though, and plays better than it would on console. Game takes place in Chicago with a sub-plot in Prague, and blends quite nicely. Cliffhang ending- but there is a pt.2 I have never tried. Great game otherwise.
Alright.. there's some favorites of mine. Anybody else into games like the aforementioned? Favorites or recommendations?
