CM Punk does not have years of BJJ training. Before signing with the UFC, his background consisted of 8 BJJ lessons and some boxing/kickboxing training with Shonie Carter in Chicago. Really? Today I learned. Can you put a source to that?. Still, I stand by my point that he'd clobber the fan. Punk is always talking about being a BJJ white belt for life and doesn't want to be ranked, but Rener Gracie has said he hasn't trained enough to be anything higher than that. www.bjjee.com/bjj-news/cm-punk-on-his-mma-level-ive-only-sparred-a-few-times-train-infrequently-with-rener-gracie/

I do remember that "white belt for life" quote from how ever long ago. I shall give that a read. Cheers!

Am I the only one annoyed when people call UFC Events or Fights "matches"?
This isn't meant to be a shot at the original poster. This is just the forth or fifth time over the last week where I've heard someone (Non-wrestling fans, mind you) refer to them as the "UFC Matches" or "That Ronda Rousey match tonight".
Weird.

To answer your question about sources Jay, MMAJunkie's did a piece on Punk a while back when started training with Roufosport in Milwaukee. He's been training with Rener Gracie for a while now in BJJ (Rener is a well respected coach in BJJ and MMA) and Duke Roufus is a former K-1 standout who trains Anthony Pettis (former UFC lightweight champion), Tyron Woodley (ranked no.4 at 170), Sergio Pettis (ranked no. 9 at 125, I believe) and Ben Askren (ranked no. 7 at 170 and undefeated Olympian in freestyle wrestling) just to name a couple notables. So the notion of a fan being remotely competitive is ludicrous. I am a martial arts practitioner (black belt in Chun Kuk Do, Chuck Norris's hybrid art) and I wouldn't even like my chances in the cage against Punk. Big bridge in skills and conditioning between a recreational martial artist that trains 3-4 times a week for a couple hours at a time, and a professional fighter who trains twice a day six days a week. I haven't heard anything about Shonie Carter being involved in Punk's training, though a guy with his experience couldn't hurt.

I know that a buyrate is of course a big reason why he was signed, but they wouldn't put him in the cage if he wasn't at least competent. Punk trains pretty darn hard, especially now that he's gearing up towards a fight in the near-distant future. With all those names helping to train him and Punk's attitude of seemingly a driven guy who's going to put the work in, Punk vs. a fan is no contest really.

It is no contest because the average fan, even with martial arts training, is not going to have the physical endurance to fight for three five minute rounds. With all the intricate physical details and muscle memory involved that make up a typical round, going one round is a stretch.
That's the thing we forget in all of this "Punk's a pro wrestler, he's not very tough" hogwash that's been going around. Pro wrestlers are professional athletes as well. Any endeavor that makes a person continually keep themselves in peak physical condition is an athlete by any standard, even if their craft is "scripted" around talking on a microphone. Reaction timing and instincts are things that can be trained, something this fan hasn't done very much of I'm sure. If that were the case, he'd have more respect for fighters and would stop trying to get himself famous off a pipe dream.

A fight? Yeah, I'm sure Punk would win.
But I'll whoop his skinny fat ass in ski-ball.

Punk did some boxing/kickboxing with Shonie Carter in a Chicago gym about 8-10 years ago, not currently. It would make sense, considering his ring work in ROH is worlds different than his WWE work. He utilized more kicks and muay thai esque techniques, so he probably had to get schooled on how to throw those techniques. He started training with Rener after he started WWE, so it wouldn't surprise me if he did work with Shonie Carter at some point. Dude's been around the game forever.
