It's not as if he contributed anything at all to the product, and it couldn't have been a case of just having him so Vince couldn't. Vince wouldn't have wanted him.
So why the hell did WCW bother with him? All he did was help to overpopulate and water down the NWO.

because he was a former WWF guy, and Eric was grabbing as many as he could for the nWo. didn't matter if you had value, or could actually perform,

The better question is why was Lanny Poffo?

Obviously because Virgil is the self-proclaimed MLK Jr of Pro-Wrestling.

If you told me Eric signed WWE's former janitor, I would believe you.

Virgil, Vincent, Shane, whatever you wanna call him.... probably the greatest wrestler to never hold a World Championship.
With that being said.... I'm clearly drunk.
But honestly, like others said, he got the job cause he was a former WWE guy. That is the only justification as to why guys like Steve Doll got hired.

The fans were so into it and wanted Virgil to get the win, and when he did, the pop from the crowd could rival any other pop at that event that night. Then a year later, we get Virgil getting squashed by Yokozuna at Survivor Series like Virgil was a jobber. I am not sure what happened in a years time, but Virgil definitely lost his stock when he lost the Million $ Title back to Ted DiBiase before Survivor Series 91.

Vince always had - and has - a bad habit of losing interest in wrestlers fast. I feel that's what happened to Virgil. he was hot, and it was a great feel-good story of him not only breaking free of his evil former employer, but also taking his most-prized possession. after he dropped it back to Ted, Vince was like " Ehh.... eff him,"

IMO Virgil/Vincent HAD a purpose @cabbageconkers ...he wasn't just hired "because he was Hogans buddy" as some have suggested.
1) 1st off & VERY important to Easy E? He was easily recognisable as ex WWF to the fanbase......particularly in this kind of role.
2) He has fulfilled this kind of role before....ie punchbag for the faces. You couldn't have the nWo getting beat up BUT you couldn't have the faces not getting any retribution either.....so Vincent was the sandbag. same as he was for Dibiase.....and pretty good at it too.
IMO he played an important role in the group(at the start) but he outlived his usefulness in 1997/98 as the group swelled. He should of lost a loser leaves town match to DDP to facilitate the Disciple taking over that role and to give WCW a friggin win.

I asked the same question in a thread a while back. Everytime I seen him on WCW I used to look at the guy and ask why on Earth is he even on the show?

He's one of many that WCW signed that you could say this about in all honesty. Gotta say that Lanny has always baffled me as there was no purpose other than the fact he was Macho's brother. Was weird seeing the Berzerker as John Nord (I think some would have barely recognised him)

If you told me Eric signed WWE's former janitor, I would believe you. Hacksaw says hi. But seriously at least Virgil was on screen and wrestled and did something from time to time. Lanny Poffo was signed so Savage was happy. I am sure all the big names had some one on the roster just to keep them happy. Virgil was a face many people would recognize so why not sign him so Vince couldn't use him?

Sole reason: it was just a small attempt to take a shot at Vince Mcmahon.
