I've watcheda good number of his promos and I just don't get it.
What makes him awful? They're usually pretty darn good.

For me personally he's just very bland.

He did struggle at times, you can see from some of his promos he seems to say the same sentence more than once (and indication he's lost his train of thought). Bret only truly became comfortable (and one of the best in my opinion) from 1996 onwards where everything started to become more reality based. Everything just clicked after that. His face to face promos with HBK in 96 and 97 are some of the most riveting stuff i've seen on TV in any medium. Even watching that stuff now gives me a great buzz. Basically what I'm saying is he struggled when the generic blue chipper promo, but when he had some juicy material to chew on, he was great!

Count me in as one of the group that thinks he was middling to fair on the Mic. However after his stint on Lonesome Dove in 1996? His confidence in relation to the camera improved drastically.
This was evident the moment he returned and started doing promos with Austin and beginning the his slow turn.

I don't think that Bret was great on the mic, but I thought he was good and always got his point across. Then after 1996, he got really good. There are certainly some gems from him in 1997.

the reason he always wore sunglasses in the hart foundation when he was teaming with neidhart was because he was so nervous he couldn't cut a promo without them. i imagine he's battled the nervousness ever since to some degree, overcoming it eventually.

After Mania 13, he had some great promos in my opinion. Especially his long one where he basically told Americans to kiss his ass.

I thought Bret was decent, but his bland, monotone voice didn't do it for some people

He wasn't bad, he just seemed not fully comfortable, and at times had a tendency to ramble....but he was by no means the worst.

He wasn't.
For a long time, Bret never really said anything groundbreaking on the mic but was always very believable. In fact, I feel he was underrated a lot on the mic. I don't think having Bret be like The Rock on the mic would've worked for his character. It wasn't him. He was a wrestler. A technician. Much like a Dynamite Kid, Dean Malenko and Chris Benoit who excelled in the ring but weren't known as fantastic mic workers.
However, unlike them, Bret did excel on the mic once he returned in late 1996. He cut a badass promo before his match with Austin at Survivor Series and continued all the way into his heel turn and eventual departure to WCW.
I like Bret's mic work. I always have.

I think he was fine on the mic, but was very wooden.... like it was hard for him to show any sort of emotion on it. Could do it in a match but just couldn't seem to do it with his voice.

His stuff from his his '96 return until Montreal was fantastic. Apart from that, his was passable.

I never once thought Bret was terrible or bland on the mic'.
Maybe it's because I am a Canadian too, and I wanna support Bret in every which way, but I never thought he was bad. He always entertained me when he spoke. Even as far back as 1992 when he came out to cut that promo with Mean Gene on Superstars of Wrestling after he won the WWE Title.

He was good on the mic. Not great, but good.

I love Bret but he sort of stuttered during his promos alot. Not really stuttering, but it seemed he struggled to get them out without alot of small errors that he would correct. He just didn't seem comfortable on the mic. He even said that many times that he was put with the Anvil because he wasn't stong on promos but Anvil was.

i was always into what he said. i guess a lot of people feel he should have had catchphrases like Austin or the Rock but that wasn't what he was all about. I agree sometimes he didn't seem that comfortable but he did what he needed and got his point across for the most part. Bret was all about ring work first and mic work was second. 96 and 97 was right on the money though.

When we think of his catchphrase 'The best there is, the best there was and the best there will be' the association is most definitely for his in-ring work, not his promos...but that's his strength and what his character is based upon...as K5 said, initially him wearing sunglasses helped mask his anxiety in front of the camera...
I've never minded his promos, as I've heard far worse, mainly from Lex Luger.

So what you guys are saying is, that when Bret was allowed to be more of himself he got better on the mic?
Never would have guessed.

I liked brets promos, but people thought he was bad because of his expressionless face and bland voice.
