In a sort of strange development, UFC announced that Rousey will be defending her title against Holly Holm on January 2nd. I could have sworn that this would have been Miesha Tate's match but I guess not. What do you UFC fans think?

I could go either way with it. Tate is obviously a game opponent that has improved a lot since the last time she fought Rousey, and she is arguably the number two girl in the division. But this is about the money that can be made, which certainly favors Holm in this case being undefeated and a World Championcaliber boxer.
As for the fight itself, I was intrigued after Tate's performance against Jessica Eye what she'd be able to do in the rematch now that she's shown some punching power. I guess it will have to wait though with Holm getting the shot, although this has to be just as intriguing. With Rousey wanting to strike more in her recent fights, I want to see how she does against Holm in that department with Holm's kickboxing skills. Three factors make this intriguing to me.
1. Would Rousey try to beat Holm at her own game? This factors in because Rousey has been so unstoppable that there's a level of invincibility there in her camp. But you're talking about going from girls that learned to strike when they got in MMA to a proven striker.
2. How does Rousey handle a southpaw? To my knowledge, Holm is the first lefty Rousey has faced, and with that will the different angles effect Rousey in stand up exchanges, where Holm has speed, power, and accuracy.
3. Kicking. Rousey has never fought a girl with a kicking game. Holm has a variety of kicks that can give Rousey problems. Front kicks, roundhouse kicks, side kicks, spinning back kicks, hook kicks. All it takes is for one to land.
Should be interesting with the style matchup. Holm has to be aggressive. Her last two fights have been decisions she could've and should've finished. This is her first (and let's be honest probably only) chance at Rousey, so the conservative approach isn't going to cut it. I'm not saying Rousey can't stand and trade with her, but I think she needs to go in grappled mode to expose Holm's improving, but still significantly weaker ground game. At the same time if Rousey elects to stand, she can not stand in front of Holm with her chin up, which is what she's shown a weakness toward in past fights. It'll be a tough fight, but I think Ronda will take the smart path and try to get this to the mat, where she is much more advanced.
Early line prediction: Rousey by sub, late Round 2.

I thought this fight would come late next year after Holm got an impressive win or 2 since both her fights in the UFC have been boring decisions. Miesha can sell a fight but since Ronda finished her twice I don't need to see a trilogy.

I just feel like they could have waited on Holm Vs Rousey. Holm has had two fights in the UFC so far, neither of which were particularly impressive wins. I feel like Holm is the more interesting matchup for Rousey in that the way she fights poses more questions of "how will Rousey handle *blank*?" But I think that the better fight right now in terms of buy rates and such would have been Tate Vs Rousey. Didn't they say originally that Tate was supposed to be next for Ronda anyways?

Welcome to UFC matchmaking my friend. While I think Tate/Rousey can be the more lucrative fight due to the "rivalry", there's something about undefeated fighters that has an intrigue. Holm's boxing credentials makes for an easy sell and plenty of scenario discussion for us and the analysts.

Haha I'm still pretty noob-ish when it comes to matchmaking in UFC and UFC in general, this just struck me as odd. Though in a weird way I also predicted Holm being next for Rousey (though I thought after the Tate fight) based solely on the fact that she's one of the only other fighters in Rousey's weight class that was undefeated. So maybe I'm catching on fast. Haha.

So maybe I'm catching on fast. Haha. A lot of times the UFC will favor a money making fight over on that makes sense. Example is Connor McGregor. If the guy wasn't a sound byte machine, he wouldn't be in the position he's in. Sure he's gotten in there and performed (albeit against guys that fought right into his game plan sans Mendes), but marketability will dictate matchups. Holm is the only fight left for Rousey other than Cyborg, and to be honest we shouldn't hold our breath for that one. While I think Tate did more to warrant the shot, the executives even said themselves we've already seen that fight. Unfortunately this is the dilemma of having such a dominant champion like Rousey, like Aldo in the 145 weight class. Title shots don't always go to the most deserving fighters because it's hard to sell a rematch unless it's razor close (I think Edgar is more deserving at 145 than McGregor, but hype talks).

Yaawwwwn. Ronda should just retire. She's not even 30. She has another 10 years or so of having to hear people tell her she's crapbecause she continues ducking Cyborg...

The fight has been moved up to November 14th at UFC 193 due to Robbie Lawler hurting his thumb. I would guess Lawler vs. Condit will happen in January.

i guess we will wait and see, Holm was prob the better choice , just on fact shes never been in there Rousey and it makes for more money on sales, then people knowing Rousey will dominate Tate. it makes sense. problem is, is Holm ready for Rousey? i highly doubt it.

The thing I'm most intrigued to see is if Holm's boxing background actually poses a threat to Rousey. We saw from the Bethe fight that Ronda's striking has gotten borderline scary but Holm is a champion boxer/kickboxer. After thinking about it, I'm more intrigued to see this now than I was when it was announced. I still think Ronda is gonna win.

Personally, I prefer this fight with Holm to another Miesha Tate fight (...even though Tate probably deserves it more).
The trouble with Rousey's opponents lately is that they all seem to charge her and be uber-aggressive - which plays right into her hands. With her great boxing background though, if Holm can box and move and counter Rousey for a while - while avoiding the takedowns, she might have more of a chance. It's a big ask though... I'm still heavily favouring Rousey.

Sometimes I wonder if the WWE writes the storylines for UFC.

From what I read, Rousey fought wild and desperately. Anyone watch it? Would that be an accurate description?

I guess Rhonda can go the WWE now - she's washed up. Totally got embarrassed and out classed.
