Lucha Underground Season 2 Episode 1 only on the El Rey Network Taped in Boyle Heights, California Air Date: January 27th.
‘El Jefe’ Dario Cueto is in the deep hot center of the desert of California, most specifically Death Valley. In the same clothes he had on when he left the Temple back in August, Cueto, now sporting a little beard, is trying to get any type of signal on his cellphone, prompting him to tell the still locked up Matanza that he would like an update on his Temple. In the distance, Black Lotus is trying to search for something to eat, or drink as their limited supply of both is almost done. Cueto finds a scorpion crossing his feet, picking up the poor animal and tossing it in the cage of the monstrous Matanza. Cueto tells Lotus to continue to search, he’s certain he will have an update soon.
Rows of the former Temple Believers are now replaced by skeletons and painted Dios de la Muertos faces as the once rowdy Lucha Underground believers are now replaced with the sound of the silent undead standing around the ring. Catrina steps out of Dario Cueto’s old office with a sick dastardly smile, welcoming everybody to her Temple of Death. Catrina reveals that she is now in charge and she will grant death on anybody and everybody who tries to cross her or get in the path of our Lucha Underground champion Mil Muertes. Catrina sarcastically announces to “ring the bell” for our first bout in the Temple of Death.
Mascarita Sagrada comes down the steps of the Temple of Death, which are now painted a dark purple, as the other parts of the Temple also reflect the macabre tone. As Sagrada enters the ring, ominous music plays as Lucha Underground champion Mil Muertes walks out of Catrina’s office. He enters the ring as a Melissa Santos introduces us to the first match.
Mascarita Sagrada vs. Mil Muertes - Matt Striker, alone at the broadcast booth, starts the match off saying the obvious: Mascarita Sagrada’s size gives Mil Muertes a huge advantage. Not one to be intimidated y size, Sagrada starts the match off with a few kicks to Muertes’ shins. Unfortunately for Mascarita, Mil is not fazed as he kicks the little person right in the face, kicking him right out of the ring. Mil follows through, with referee Justin Borden not even starting the count out knowing that if he counts out Muertes, Catrina would probably chop off his head. Muertes literally chucks Sagrada from the floor and over the top rope, the mini-estrella crashing hard on the mat.Muertes follows through with the Flatliner, completely dominating Mascarita Sagrada. Mil Muertes defeats Mascarita Sagrada.
Holding his Lucha Underground championship, Mil Muertes climbs up on top of the Temple of Death, where the local bands were situated last season. As he gets on top, he comfortably sits down on a throne that is surrounded by real life human skulls. Mil lets out a sick laugh, as referee Justin Borden scrapes Sagrada off the mat and carries him to the back in his arms.
Riding down the Golden State Freeway, Son of Havoc and Ivelisse are riding on their custom CP motorcycle, enjoying the free ride. After a few moments of riding, Angelico jumps off the side of the road onto the Freeway with his custom dirtbike. They nod to one another, engaging in a race to the Temple of Death. Son of Havoc and Ivelisse win the race as they arrive to the Temple. They enter the combat zone, but after pushing the doors open they come face to face with Catrina and the Disciples of Death. Not one word is said, as Catrina smiles and leaves the scene with the Lucha Underground Trios champions, Barrio Negro, El Siniestro de la Muerte, and Trece.
Elsewhere in the Temple of Death, the black painted locker room, Prince Puma is doing some stretching as Konnan reminds him that they did have a good Season last year, but Mil Muertes’ winning the Lucha Underground championship was just a minor setback. Konnan says he believes Prince Puma can achieve greatness once again, he just has to believe in himself. Suddenly, Johnny Mundo enters the locker room with his furry coat with a blonde bombshell, Taya (Known as Taya Valkyrie in AAA), by his side. Mundo tells the young Puma to leave “his” locker room, stating that he is not worthy anymore because he is no longer Lucha Underground champion. Puma goes to strike out of anger, but Konnan steps in the way to tell his protege to focus on tonight’s match. Taya, not wasting anytime to leave her mark, slaps the taste out of Konnan’s mouth before smiling and leaving the room alongside Johnny Mundo. Konnan holds his cheek while telling Puma to go out to the ring and do what he does best: win.
Prince Puma vs. Jack Evans - The two luchadors start the match circling one another, Konnan deciding to stay backstage as well. Evans gets the initial takedown, getting a quick one count before things start going to the air. Puma flies across the ring, delivering a sick dropkick, only for a near fall. Evans comes back and connects with a few high flying moves of his own. A few swift kicks later, Evans goes for another pinfall, once again getting a two count. Prince Puma focuses on a ground game for a bit, working the legs of the talented flyer. After hitting a sick stalling standing suplex, Prince Puma goes to the air and connects with the 630 Senton for the pinfall victory. Prince Puma defeats Jack Evans.
Outside of the Temple of Death, in the dark night, a flame of fire appears out of nowhere in front of the doors of Catrina’s Temple of Death as the flame takes the form of a human. Drago appears with his dragon wings as a light suddenly shines down upon him from the high sky of the night. The light gets brighter as Aero Star pops up beside him in a glowing suit, extending his hand to his friend. The two luchadors enter the Temple after shaking hands, ready for another Season of lucha action.
Drago and Aero Star vs. Cisco and Cortez Castro - The two luchadors from the Lucha Libre Familia, Cortez Castro and Cisco, start the match off with the experience advantage in tag team action as they pummel Aero Star in their corner, not letting him get the tag to the fired up Drago. Cisco gets a near fall, however he slips up with Aero Star amounts some offence with some quick kicks and forearms. Aero Star delivers a hurricanrana and makes the tag to Drago who clears house. Drago delivers a nice crossbody on Cisco as Aero Star jumps up on the top rope and delivers a sick plancha to the outside on Castro. Drago finishes Cisco with the Dragon’s Tail for the victory. Drago and Aero Star defeat Cisco and Cortez Castro.
Once again outside the Temple of Death, a beat up sports car enters the parking lot as the masked fan favorite Fenix exits his car with the Gift of the Gods championship around his waist. As he goes to enter the Temple of Death, two big-boned skeletons stop him at the door as Catrina comes out to speak with the masked marvel. Catrina reveals that Fenix will have to defend his Gift of the Gods championship against King Cuerno in two minutes. And should he lose, Mil Muertes will come down from his Throne of Skulls to destroy him. Fenix accepts the challenge, being the superhero that he is.
Lucha Underground Gift of the Gods Championship Match | Fenix © vs. King Cuerno - The resident hunter of Lucha Underground starts the match off with a big kick to the gut of the masked Fenix. Cuerno looks to end things early, trying to connect with the Thrill of the Hunt on his old rival. However Fenix had it well scouted, Striker pointing out that these two know each other well, as he reverses the finishing move with a hurricanrana that throws Cuerno to the outside and connects with a beautiful corkscrew seated senton over the top rope. After Fenix gets the near fall, he and Cuerno connect with some beautiful lucha libre moves. The Thrill of the Hunt is reversed once more by Fenix before he connects with the Fenix Driver for the victory to retain his Gift of the Gods championship. Fenix defeats King Cuerno to retain the Gift of the Gods championship.
Fenix clutches his Gift of the Gods championship as senior referee Marty Elias gives it to him and signals that he is the winner. As Fenix gets to his feet and celebrates the win, Lucha Underground champion Mil Muertes descends from his Throne of Skulls and smashes the smaller Fenix from behind with a huge forearm. Mil Muertes hits Fenix with the Flatliner, laying him out and holding the Lucha Underground championship in the air as he steps on the Gift of the Gods championship. Catrina comes out from her office, clapping for her champion. Fenix writhes in pain on the mat, as every single Lucha Underground referee refuses to help him as Catrina stares them down, Matt Striker noting that they could be assassinated should they not do what Catrina wants.
In a training dojo with the paintings of broken arms on the walls, the painted up Vampiro is carefully laying down his plans for his return to the Temple of Death alongside his protege Pentagon Jr. Pentagon listens closely as Vampiro promises to bring everybody to Hell with them. But before they do so, Pentagon goes over to the corner of the dojo where a tied up random pedestrian is tied up. Pentagon unties him, only to break his arm. The pedestrian screams in agony as Vampiro walks on over to bite him and suck his blood, effectively killing the random stranger. As blood pours from Vampiro’s mouth, the Cero Miedo master and protege exit the dojo to begin their trek to the Temple of Death.
