New Japan Pro Wrestling Wrestle Kingdom 10 January 4th 2016; Tokyo Dome
IWGP Heavyweight Championship Match Kazuchika Okada © vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi It was one year ago, at Wrestle Kingdom 9, that Hiroshi Tanahashi defeated Kazuchika Okada to retain the IWGP Heavyweight Championship. On that night Tanahashi said that Okada wasn’t ready to be the Ace of New Japan. Since then he’s kept to that claim, stating that while Okada might be ‘the man’ he isn’t the Ace, that honour belongs to Tanahashi. At Wrestle Kingdom 10 Tanahashi will cash in his G1 Climax Briefcase to challenge Okada with both men having a lot to prove. These men are not just battling for the right to be IWGP Heavyweight Champion, but to be called the rightful Ace of New Japan Pro Wrestling.
IWGP Intercontinental Championship Match Shinsuke Nakamura © vs. AJ Styles It was at Power Struggle that AJ Styles accepted Shinsuke Nakamura’s open challenge for the IWGP Intercontinental Championship at the Tokyo Dome. Now, despite only being cleared from a back injury just days ago, this first time ever match will go ahead as the co-leader of Chaos will go one on one with the leader of Bullet Club in a co-main event that is sure to blow people away. Having only met in the ring once before, in a tag team match back in 2008, it will be the King of Strong Style against the Phenomenal One, with Chaos and Bullet Club watching on.
Hirooki Goto vs. Tetsuya Naito Tetsuya Naito and his Los Ingobernables de Japón cohorts have made a serious enemy in Hirooki Goto, who is not impressed with their new attitudes. With both EVIL and BUSHI expected to be at ringside Goto knows that he’s going in at a disadvantage, so he’s announced that he’ll have Captain New Japan and perennial young lion Yohei Komatsu in his corner. Despite Naito’s attempts to sway Komatsu to the Los Ingobernables way of thinking the young lion will stand with his New Japan bretheren, in match where the winner will get the next shot at the IWGP Heavyweight Champion.
NEVER Openweight Championship Match Tomohiro Ishii © vs. Katsuyori Shibata As announced on December 10th NEVER Openweight Champion Tomohiro Ishii will defend against one of the few men who are as stiff as he is, Katsuyori Shibata. Stemming from the World Tag League, where Shibata pinned Ishii on both the opening and final day, this will be Shibata’s first ever shot at the NEVER Openweight Championship and you can be sure that Ishii is going to want to avenge those two pinfall losses.
IWGP Tag Team Championship Match Karl Anderson & Doc Gallows © vs. Great Bash Heel Great Bash Heel, the combined forces of Tobi Makabe and Tomoaki Honma, earned this title shot by winning the 2015 World Tag League back on December 9th, and Honma has made it clear this means a lot to him. Having never won a title in New Japan Honma is looking to finally break that unfortunate streak, while Bullet Club’s Karl Anderson & Doc Gallows are looking to spoil the party for the ultimate underdog and the Unchained Gorilla.
ROH World Championship Match Jay Lethal © vs. Michael Elgin On December 9th Jay Lethal requested a challenger for a title match at Wrestle Kingdom 10. Michael Elgin wasted no time in accepting the challenge that very night, cashing in on the title shot that he won by winning ROH’s Survival of the Fittest tournament. With Jay Lethal overcoming A.J. Styles at Final Battle the match was finally solidified so, for the first time ever, the ROH World Championship will be defended inside the Tokyo Dome!
IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship Match Kenny Omega © vs. KUSHIDA This is the third time that Kenny Omega and KUSHIDA have clashed over the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship. The first took place at Dominion 7.5 where KUSHIDA defeated Omega to win the title. The joy was short lived however, as Omega took the title right back at Destruction in Okayama. Now KUSHIDA gets one more match, one more chance to once again achieve his dream of being IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion, but the Cleaner has promised to sweep KUSHIDA out of New Japan once and for all.
NEVER Openweight Six Man Tag Team Championship Match Bullet Club vs. Toru Yano & The Briscoe Brothers When it was announced that the Bullet Club trio of Bad Luck Fale, Tama Tonga and Yujiro Takahashi would clash with Toru Yano and two mystery partners the big mystery was who would possibly want to team with the number one DVD salesman in Japan? The answer? Dem Boys The Briscoe Brothers, coming all the way from Ring of Honor in a match that promises to be entertaining on a variety of levels, especially upon the announcement that it will be to crown the inaugural NEVER Openweight Six Man Tag Team Champions!
IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship Match reDRagon © vs. Matt Sydal & Ricochet vs. Roppongi Vice vs. The Young Bucks It was on November 7th that Matt Sydal & Ricochet won the 2015 Super Jr. Tag Tournament to lay claim to this title match, however they weren’t the only ones laying claim. Roppongi Vice, who elimitated reDRagon from the tournament, and The Young Bucks, wanting their rematch for the titles, both did the same. Throw all four teams in one match and you’ve got one of the most exciting and thrilling contests at Wrestle Kingdom 10.
New Japan Rumble Exclusively on the New Japan World Pre Show Fifteen men will enter this match with the winner receiving the next shot at the IWGP Intercontinental Championship. New entries will enter each minute with eliminations occurring via pinfall, submission or being thrown over the top rope.

New Japan Pro Wrestling Wrestle Kingdom 10 January 4th 2016; Tokyo Dome
New Japan Rambo Exclusively on the New Japan World Pre Show | Entrant #1: Hiroyoshi Tenzan
Entrant #2: Yuji Nagata
The 2016 New Japan Rumble kicks off with two veterans as Tenzan and Nagata. Nagata is actually last year’s winner and he was looking to do so again, though he knew the odds were against him here thanks to his early entry. The fans here in the Tokyo Dome were ready for this fun opener ahead of the serious stuff tonight, and were cheering on both of these favourites as they went at it for the first minute ahead of the third entrant. Entrant #3: Cody Hall
Bullet Club’s resident young boy was next out, and immediately tried to make a name for himself by going to work on both Tenzan and Nagata. His arrogance played against him though as Tenzan and Nagata teamed up and nearly eliminated the big man twice in quick succession.
Entrant #4: Juice Robinson
The second young lion in the rumble entered next, and quickly allied himself with Cody Hall, pitting the lions against the veterans. Not even the speed and strength combo and Juice and Cody could overcome the experience of the veterans, failing at all attempts to get the elimination.
Entrant #5: EVIL
The most terrifying member of Los Ingobernables made a slow entrance to the ring, not really caring about proceedings and leaving the veterans and young lions to keep going at it. Nagata took Hall out with a big lariat before Juice took both Tenzan and Nagata to the canvas with a double dropkick. As soon as he was up though EVIL was suddenly behind him, nailing him with Evil (a self-titled STO) to get the pin and the first elimination.
Elimination #1: Juice Robinson (03:53, EVIL has 1 Elimination) Entrant #6: Yoshi-Hashi
Yohsi-Hashi was playing it smart here, not entering the ring immediately as EVIL went to work on everyone else. It was Tenzan who fought back with a few vicious strikes, but Yoshi-Hashi chose that as his moment to strike, turning the tides on the veterans.
Entrant #7: Satoshi Kojima
The Koji half of Tencozy hit the ring next and immediately went to assistance of his tag partner. Kojima and Tenzan were still fighting against the numbers when Cody Hall entered the fray, only for Nagata to come flying into things (far quicker than a man of his age should be capable of) and suddenly we had a huge three on three brawl going on.
Entrant #8: Jado
The Tokyo Dome popped at the return of Jado, who has been over in Pro-Wrestling NOAH on booking duties recently. Jado wasted no time in climbing to the top rope and, with all six men brawling, leaping straight off and taking all of them down in one go, including himself.
Entrant #9: Ryusuke Taguchi
With everyone in the ring having to work their way to their feet Taguchi used the opportunity to play to the fans. It’s sometimes hard to believe, but the Japanese fans do enjoy some Taguchi. Once he was in the ring he immediately launched into some of his infamous ass-based offence. He took out a few guys before Nagata grabbed him mid-ass-leap and hauled him over for a big German suplex.
Entrant #10: Sho Tanaka
The final young lion in the match hit the ring, and immediately went to work on everyone, sprinting across the ring and hitting everyone with absolutely everything in his arsenal, including an absolutely massive dropkick that sent Cody Hall over the top rope and to the floor, the young lion eliminating one of his own. Elimination #2: Cody Hall (08:35, Sho Tanaka has 1 Elimination) Entrant #11: Jushin “Thunder” Liger
The legendary Jushin Liger hit the ring to a huge pop, and that only got louder when he went toe to toe with Sho Tanaka. Everyone stood aside as Tanaka and Liger went to work on each other in a fast paced back and forth. Tanaka shockingly came out on top, scooping Liger to the ground and locking in the Boston crab, only for EVIL to come out of nowhere with a big boot, kicking off the latest huge match wide brawl.
Entrant #12: Tiger Mask
The second New Japan legend in as many minutes hits the ring and while he’s nowhere near as agile as Liger still seems to be he still gave it a good go, going at it with Jado, Taguchi and Tanaka even coming close to eliminating the young lion. EVIL continued his impressive run as he got the better of Tenzan but couldn’t eliminate the big man while Yoshi-Hashi got a near elimination on Liger.
Entrant #13: BUSHI
The second member of Los Ingobernables hit the ring and, within seconds, had sprayed Taguchi in the face with the black mist. Taguchi walked straight into the Evil STO and within seconds was thrown from the ring. EVIL and BUSHI went to work on the rest of the competitors, laying out Tanaka and Yoshi-Hashi and promptly throwing Jado from the ring much to the crowd’s chagrin.
Elimination #3: Ryusuke Taguchi (11:14, EVIL has 2 Eliminations) Elimination #4: Jado (11:46, EVIL has 3 Eliminations, BUSHI has 1 Elimination) Entrant #14: Mascara Dorada
The Tokyo Dome popped as Dorada hit the ring and immediately went after recent foe BUSHI, who he lost the CMLL World Welterweight title to on the road to Tokyo Dome. Before EVIL could get involved Tenzan had gone to work on him, the big man evening the odds. With Los Ingobernables occupied the rest of the field went at it as well, everyone battling it out for that shot at the IWGP Intercontinental Championship.
Entrant #15: Manabu Nakanishi
With thirteen minutes having passed Nakanishi made his way (slowly) down to the ring as the final entrant. He slid in and immediately caught a leaping Yoshi-Hashi and hauled him up to lock in the Argentine Neckbreaker Rack. Nakanishi kept Hashi in the rack and with nobody interrupting Hashi had no choice but to tap out. Nakanishi promptly, for good measure you’d assume since Yoshi-Hashi was already eliminated via submission, threw Hashi over the top rope to the floor from the Rack.
Elimination #5: Yoshi-Hashi (13:46, Manabu Nakanishi has 1 Elimination)
The match continued. EVIL and BUSHI were looking out for each other at every turn as were Kojima and Tenzan and Liger and Tiger Mask despite their recent match on the Road To shows. With Sho smartly laying low that left Nakanishi and Nagata to just shake their heads and go crazy on absolutely everyone, nailing elbows and lariats all over the place. In the madness Tiger Mask found himself thrown from the ring following Nagata’s Justice Knee before Tanaka was knocked on his ass by a running dropkick from Tanaka. Elimination #6: Tiger Mask (14:36, Yuji Nagata has 1 Elimination)
The crowd erupted as Nagata slowly got to his feet to be greeted by Sho Tanaka signalling him to bring it on. Everyone else in the ring just backed to the ropes, everyone wanting to see the young lion and the veteran Nagata go at it. And they did, but it didn’t turn out how everyone was expecting. Sho used his speed to outpace Nagata at every turn with a series of strikes. Sho even tried to lock in the Boston Crab (which should basically be called the Young Lion special by now) only for Nagata to power out, sending Tanaka straight into big EVIL. EVIL grabbed Tanaka by the throat and threw him over the top rope…
But Tanaka lands on the apron and proceeds to springboard off of the top rope, catching EVIL with a big dropkick that sends him straight into Nagata’s signature Backdrop Hold. Nagata and Tanaka ended up shaking hands, much to the crowds delight but as soon as Nagata turned around Tanaka dropkicked him straight over the top rope in the biggest moment of young Tanaka’s career! The crowd, and Yuji Nagata himself, can’t believe what they’ve just seen from the young lion. He gets no time to celebrate however as he finds himself nearly being knocked clean out by the Kojima Cutter, Nagata’s fellow veteran getting a measure of revenge on the Young Lion by eliminating him from the match.
Elimination #7: Yuji Nagata (16:02, Sho Tanaka has 2 Eliminations) Elimination #8: Sho Tanaka (16:11, Satoshi Kojima has 1 Elimination)
With the match down to seven it became a much more meticulous affair, as far as New Japan matches ever are. Things slowed down momentarily as EVIL took out both Tenzan and Nakanishi with a double lariat and then went to work on Kojima while BUSHI, Dorada and Liger competed in some back and forth junior action. It wasn’t until the two Los Ingobernables men switched things up that something happened. BUSHI looked in trouble at Dorada’s hands but an Irish whip went awry, BUSHI sliding through the legs of EVIL who then charged full force into Dorada, taking him down with a running Evil STO. BUSHI followed up with the MX to get the pin. Liger attempted to take BUSHI out there and then but suffered a spinning lariat from EVIL, who promptly pinned the Junior legend for another swift elimination.
Elimination #9: Mascara Dorada (17:57, Satoshi Kojima has 2 Eliminations) Elimination #10: Jushin “Thunder” Liger (18:15, EVIL has 4 Eliminations)
And then there were five. Nakanishi was basically immobile at this point, gassed and getting his breath back in the corner. As such Los Ingobernables and Tencozy went at it and it was vicious. The fight between the two teams went back and forth with plenty of elimination attempts, but every time anyone came close to being eliminated their partner made the quick save, knowing that even in this all against all match they didn’t want to be outnumbered. Everyone ultimately forgot about Nakanishi, right up until the moment when he came to the rescue of a very much losing Tencozy. The tides seemed to turn, right up until the moment where BUSHI somehow sprayed a second batch of black mist, this time into the eyes of Hiroyoshi Tenzan! Tenzan, blinded, lashed out at caught Nakanishi and, assuming that it was EVIL, followed up with a blind lariat that sent him tumbling out of the ring! EVIL immediately came from behind, throwing Tenzan out straight after him! Elimination #11: Manabu Nakanishi (20:43, Hiroyoshi Tenzan has 1 Elimination) Elimination #12: Hiroyoshi Tenzan (20:45, EVIL has 5 Eliminations)
On the outside Tenzan finally recovered his sight and, realizing what had happened, was understandably furious. Nakanishi took offence to the fact that Tenzan eliminated him when he was only trying to help and attacked his fellow veteran, who of course fought back. Tenzan and Nakanishi were eventually pulled apart by a host of officials which did little good for Kojima inside the ring as he realized he was outnumbered against the Los Ingobernables members. EVIL and BUSHI toyed with Kojima, beating on him and antagonising the crowd. Kojima fought back where he could but knew that he was fighting a losing battle, that was until he ducked right underneath an EVIL lariat that ended up striking BUSHI right into the ropes. Kojima quickly capitalised by throwing BUSHI over the top! Elimination #13: BUSHI (22:43, Satoshi Kojima has 3 Eliminations)
And then there were two. Satoshi Kojima and EVIL with a shot at the IWGP Intercontinental Championship on the line. EVIL wasted no time worrying about the fact that he just eliminated his own partner and instead once more went to work on Kojima. This time though the odds were even and Satoshi got in his fair share as the two went at it. EVIL attempted the Evil STO but Kojima managed to counter it, nearly hitting the Kojima Cutter only for EVIL to push him into the turnbuckle. EVIL went for the big splash but Kojima dodged and, as EVIL staggered out of the corner, managed to connect with the Kojima Cutter! Kojima went for the pinfall… and got it! Kojima got the win and made a quick exit before EVIL or BUSHI could get their hands on him! Satoshi Kojima won the New Japan Rumble and with it a shot at the IWGP Intercontinental Championship! | Match Time: 24:07 Match Rating: ***3/4 |

IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship Match
| reDRagon © vs. Matt Sydal & Ricochet vs. Roppongi Vice vs. The Young Bucks
| Wrestle Kingdom X officially kicked off with some high flying junior tag team action and, as the Tokyo Dome fans have become accustomed to, this one was fast paced, high octane and full of fun spots. With four Gaijin teams involved there had been talk about whether this would get the crowd into it but that was swiftly batted aside when the Tokyo Dome popped loudly for a double suicide dive courtesy of Sydal and Ricochet. From there this match was the usual four way junior tag with everyone getting their high spots in and plenty of near falls with no clear winner from the off.
The ending stretch is exactly what you’d expect. The Young Bucks found time for their ‘superkick party’, taking out Roppongi Vice before going for the Meltzer Driver on Fish. O’Reilly came in for the save, springboarding off of the ropes and stomping Matt Jackson right in the back of the head. From there reDRagon connected with Chasing the Dragon on Nick and looked to have things all sewn up… that was until a double springboard dropkick from Sydal and Ricochet sent both members of reDRagon to the outside. Sydal and Ricochet finished the champs off with a double suicide dive and then went up high, connecting with dual shooting star presses, which still gets a huge pop every time they do them to get the pinfall. One match down and one title change as Matt Sydal and Ricochet walk away as the new IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champions. | Match Time: 11:45 Match Rating: ***1/2 |
NEVER Openweight Six Man Tag Team Championship Match
| Bullet Club (w/ Cody Hall) vs. Toru Yano & The Briscoe Brothers
| Though the crowd are always into Yano this was not a great match by any stretch of the imagination, and you’ll find it hard to find anyone who’ll say otherwise. Yano was really the only highlight, with his interactions with Tonga and Takahashi getting some laughs, but aside from that there isn’t a lot to talk about. The Briscoe’s were passable here, not really getting a chance to shine, while Fale looked bad all around. There was an extended heat sequence as Mark Briscoe got worked over by the Bullet Club and eventually made the hot tag to Jay who, with a bit of help from a Yano low blow, took out both Tonga and Takahashi. Jay had some difficulty dealing with Fale but Yano again helped out by grabbing his leg. Mark came off the top with a big leg drop and Jay followed up with a huge top turnbuckle elbow drop and just like that Fale was cut down and Yano & The Briscoe Brothers had captured gold!
| Match Time: 10:03 Match Rating: ** |
IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship Match
| Kenny Omega © (w/ Cody Hall) vs. KUSHIDA | This was a fine step up over the previous dullness and straight from the entrances you knew this was going to be fun. KUSHIDA came out in the Derorean, only for Omega to top it by riding on top of a garbage truck! The Cleaner was looking to sweep KUSHIDA out of his was for good here tonight but the Time Splitter had other ideas and really took the fight to Omega from the start. Cody Hall, seeing Omega in trouble early on, attempted to get involved but just got a through the ropes dropkick to the face for his trouble, though the momentary distraction meant Omega could connect with the Dragon Rebirth suplex to take control. There was an extended heat sequence here as Omega worked over KUSHIDA and taunted the fans in the process, only for KUSHIDA to come right back with a wicked looking hurricanrana followed up with a double knee backbreaker for a near fall.
A fast paced back and forth stretch ended with Omega running to cover literally behind Cody Hall, only for KUSHIDA to leap over the top rope and take both Hall and Omega out. KUSHIDA tried to capitalise but by the time he got Omega back into the ring Kenny had the smarts to counter with a small package. KUSHIDA kicked out and swiftly went for the buzzsaw kick but Omega countered and lifted KUSHIDA up for the One Winged Angel. Somehow KUSHIDA managed to get out of Omega’s grip and, as he was falling down, gripping the arm and dragging Omega straight down and locking in the Hoverboard Lock! Omega held on as long as he could but, as with everyone else who’s been caught in the hold, had no choice but to tap out making KUSHIDA the new IWGP Junior Heavyweight champion! | Match Time: 10:25 Match Rating: ***1/2 |
ROH World Championship Match | Jay Lethal © (w/ Truth Martini) vs. Michael Elgin | This one struggled because a large portion of the Tokyo Dome either didn’t have a clue who Jay Lethal was or they just weren’t interested in him. Of course Michael Elgin got enough of a reaction for both of them, these New Japan fans absolutely love the powerhouse Gaijin, every time he hit a big power move they went crazy. As a result Jay Lethal kind of became hated just by association of being his opponent, of course that didn’t help that the New Japan fans had had enough of Truth Martini within the first three minutes of the match, he just doesn’t have the level of popularity that Bullet Club do to get away with being a dickish heel.
The match was firmly focused around Elgin being the power player and Lethal relying on speeds, smarts and Truth’s interference to keep himself in the match. Of course Lethal is notoriously good at what he does and this match is well worth a watch to see him and Elgin’s great back and forth interactions. Lethal basically tried to hit the Lethal Injection at every opportunity only for Elgin to counter him at every turn. Lethal nearly got the pin with the Hail to the King but Elgin powered straight out at two and then made a huge comeback. Truth’s interference kept being the difference maker until Elgin lifted Lethal straight overhead and full on threw him onto Martini, taking him out of action. A short time, and one Revolution Elgin Bomb later and we had a new ROH World Champion much to the delight of the Tokyo Dome! | Match Time: 11:30 Match Rating: ***1/2

IWGP Tag Team Championship Match
| Karl Anderson & Doc Gallows © (w/ Bullet Club) vs. Great Bash Heel | In terms of Guns and Gallows matches this was actually on the entertaining side, though as you’d expect that was through no help from Gallows. The Tokyo Dome were firmly behind GBH from the off, they love Honma here and wanted to see him pick up his first piece of gold in New Japan. That wasn’t going to be easy given that almost the entire Bullet Club was at ringside for this match minus AJ, who of course has that big Intercontinental Championship match coming up, and Kenny Omega who was licking his wounds. The “Biz Cliz” provided a considerable distraction for Great Bash Heel, putting them at a big disadvantage throughout.
That didn’t stop GBH from taking the fight to Guns and Gallows, especially Makabe who was the clear star of the match. In terms of in ring action it was all GBH and the only reason they couldn’t get the job done was because of Bullet Club’s constant interference. Makabe became increasingly furious and that let Anderson take control, capitalising on the distraction and very nearly finishing things with the Gun Stun. The match continued with Bullet Club now in firm control, that was until Honma began building up a head of steam, including hitting three straight Kokeshi’s on both members of Guns and Gallows. He finished it up by going up high and diving from the top turnbuckle, delivering a huge Kokeshi to the entire Bullet Club who were helping Gallows up on the outside! With the entire Bullet Club down Makabe delivered the King Kong Lariat and got the pinfall!
The crowd go absolutely crazy. Here in the Tokyo Dome Tomoaki Honma has won his first ever championship belt here in New Japan as Great Bash Heel mark the fourth title change of the night in impressive fashion!
| Match Time: in 14:15 Match Rating: ***1/2 |
NEVER Openweight Championship Match
| Tomohiro Ishii © vs. Katsuyori Shibata | Thus far the action had been fairly technical, but that was thrown right out of the window when these two stepped foot in the ring. Everyone knew what they were getting here and Ishii and Shibata didn’t disappoint, beating the holy hell out of each other for nearly fifteen minutes. Following epic, stiff encounters with Makabe and Honma many people were wondering what would happen when Ishii faced the younger, more agile Shibata. The answer? Pretty much the same thing, as Shibata wasn’t looking to use his agility or speed in this one, he just seemed happy to have an opponent who he could hit as hard as humanly possible and so he did exactly that.
There was no clear cut winner here. Shibata and Ishii went at it from the very beginning and it was difficult for either of them to get any kind of advantage because just when you think you’ve got Ishii or Shibata down they find another wind and start hitting harder than before. The match featured the same spots you found in those Makabe and Honma defences including the vicious palm strike flurries and the back and forth headbutts which Ishii came out on top of. The one moment you definitely wouldn’t have seen in those matches though was Shibata charging across the ring and diving through the ropes straight into a headbutt from Ishii on the outside. From there it seemed like the champion had things wrapped up but when Ishii went up for the big brainbuster Shibata slipped out and locked in a guillotine choke! Ishii refused to tap out but couldn’t escape and ended up passing out, at which point Shibata released the hold, sat Ishii up and delivered a knockout Penalty Kick to put Ishii down for the count! Shibata wins and becomes the new NEVER Openweight champion here at the Tokyo Dome!
| Match Time: 13:42 Match Rating: **** |
Grudge Match | Hirooki Goto (w/ Captain New Japan & Yohei Komatsu) vs. Tetsuya Naito (w/ EVIL & BUSHI) | If there was going to be one match that you could compare to New Japan’s American counterparts it would be this one, because when you’ve got Los Ingobernables involved you know there’s going to be some underhanded shenanigans going on. A lot of people saw this as the match that could make or break Naito’s heel push and luckily for him these two had great chemistry in the ring, with Naito’s “who gives a damn” attitude perfectly contrasting with Goto’s fighting mentality. Goto found himself consistently frustrated by Naito’s stalling, not to mention the constant presence of EVIL & BUSHI at ringside. Captain New Japan did his best to even the odds while Komatsu seemed somewhat conflicted, possibly swayed by Naito trying to recruit him in recent weeks.
The match went back and forth, every time Goto took control Los Ingobernables would come into play giving Naito the chance to get himself back into the swing of things. Even though Naito was acting as if the match didn’t mean anything to him, including taking a brief respite to sit and chill at the announce desk, it was clear he wanted the victory and the title shot that would come with it. He used every trick in his arsenal but just couldn’t put Goto away, which included Goto kicking out off Destino. Just as it looked like Goto was going to get the victory BUSHI jumped up on the ring apron, likely to spray the mist, only for Captain New Japan to yank him back down. The Captain was attacked by EVIL, the big man of Los Ingobernables dragging the Captain up the stage and beating the hell out of him in the process.
Yohei Komatsu suddenly leaped up onto the ring apron, calling Red Shoes Unno over and causing the distraction BUSHI needed to deliver the black mist. A second later and Naito had hit a second Destino, Komatsu leaping off of the apron to let Unno count the pin and give the victory to Tetsuya Naito. The crowd are shocked as Komatsu entered the ring and was embraced by Naito and BUSHI, seemingly taking Naito up on his offer to join Los Ingobernables de Japon and helping him bag himself a shot at the IWGP Heavyweight Championship at The New Beginning! | Match Time: 16:03 Match Rating: **** |
IWGP Intercontinental Championship Match
| Shinsuke Nakamura © vs. AJ Styles | It was time for the first of what could only be described as a monumental double main event. Following AJ Styles making his entrance literally carried out by the Bullet Club the ‘Biz Cliz’ leader surprisingly sent his group to the back, wanting a fair fight. Nakamura made a traditionally extravagant entrance in full king garb surrounded by a bevy of beautiful women that would even make Takahashi blush. As things got to it the Tokyo Dome were buzzing, knowing they were about to see not only a classic match but a first time ever bout as well and Nakamura and AJ didn’t want to disappoint, with both men having their A-grade working boots on from the off.
There was a tentative feeling out stage at the start with both men coming out pretty much even, just proving to each other what they already know, that they’re pretty evenly matched and that it’s going to take something special to finish this match. And so they went to work properly, working a fast paced match with both men trying to find the slightest weakness in the other that they could exploit. For Nakamura that weakness came quickly as he began working over AJ’s back, an injury to which recently caused him to pull out of the World Tag League. AJ found himself at a disadvantage, both having to find room for offence but also put a focus on protecting his back at the same time, something that isn’t easy against a man with Nakamura’s striking ability, not to mention his vast psychological experience.
AJ fought back though, hitting the kind of high risk moves that would make you wince given his recent back injury, and it seemed to be working until Nakamura connected with the Boma Ye for a near fall. Nakamura set up for a second Boma Ye but Styles dodged, connecting with the Pele Kick for a near fall of his own. Things heated up as both men sought out every opportunity to win. Nakamura countered a Styles Clash attempt into a Cross Armbreaker but Styles managed to reach the ropes. Nakamura hit a second Boma Ye but it still wasn’t enough for the win. Nakamura went up high, this time going for the Boma Ye from the second rope but Styles countered with a Boma Ye of his own! Styles followed up with the Styles Clash but, deciding to make sure the job was done, delivered a second Styles Clash for good measure! AJ made the cover and just like that we have a new IWGP Intercontinental Champion! | Match Time: 22:03 Match Rating: ****1/2 |
IWGP Heavyweight Championship Match | Kazuchika Okada © vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi | It was main event time and the Tokyo Dome was ready for this one right from the off. They didn’t need any fancy theatrics to get them pumped up, though that didn’t stop Tanahashi bringing a live guitar player with him to the ring and Okada having a huge flowing jacket. Tanahashi acted heelish prior to the match, as he has throughout much of the build since G1, laughing in Okada’s face and telling him not to cry when he loses like last time. Okada didn’t take kindly to this and slapped the taste right out of Tanahashi’s mouth and just like that the match was on and what a way to start it. The two erupted into a huge brawl, no feeling out process here, and just tried to beat some respect into the other. The brawl went to the outside with Tanahashi throwing Okada into the barricade and even getting in Gedo’s face.
Tanahashi was in control as he took the match back to the ring but that didn’t last long as Okada countered a top turnbuckle attempt with one of his absolutely picture perfect dropkicks which always gets a pop from the crowd. Okada took control here, working over the leg of Tanahashi in an attempt to weaken him and restrict his opportunities to go up high for his High Fly Flow. That’s easier said than done of course as Tanahashi struck back with a Sling Blade out of nowhere and from there the match went back into his hands. Tanahashi, not one to be outdone, began working over the arm in an attempt to weaken any Rainmaker attempt and that became the story of the match, both men working over the other in an attempt to weaken their chances at hitting the big finish. Tanahashi even hit a High Fly Flow exclusively onto the side and arm of Okada that, while only getting a near fall, definitely did some damage.
Okada got in his fair share of offence here but it was a consistent uphill battle. He even managed to counter a second Sling Blade and pull Tanahashi in and connect with the Rainmaker but only managed a near fall! Okada went for a second Rainmaker right away but Tanahashi countered this time and yanked Okada down and locked in Shinsuke Nakamura’s signature Cross Armbreaker to the injured arm! Okada seemed destined to tap out but somehow fought through, reaching the ropes and breaking the hold. The crowd were going crazy at this point for every near finish and rightfully so, this one was off the chain. Tanahashi went up top for a second High Fly Flow but Okada managed to pop up and connect with a huge dropkick! He pulled Tanahashi up, lifted him and connected with the Kneeling Reverse Piledriver… but only for a near fall!
Okada wanted to finish things, pulling Tanahashi up and going for, and connecting with, a second Rainmaker… but again Tanahashi kicks out! Okada began wailing on Tanahashi with fists and then went for a third Rainmaker only for Tanahashi to counter with the Sling Blade! The challenger went up top but the leg got the best of him and he took too long, which means as he came down Okada rolled out of the way, grabbed Tanahashi as he rose and connected with a big Rainmaker! Okada held the arm in pain but made the cover… and that’s it! Okada wins! Okada got the pinfall! The crowd go crazy as Kazuchika Okada was handed the IWGP Heavyweight Championship! Tanahashi got to his feet, realizing that he’d lost the match and, in a show of sportsmanship, offered his hand to Okada. The Rainmaker took his hand, shook it and said that he’s the Ace now and Tanahashi nodded, agreeing but warning that he’ll be back. Tanahashi left the ring, giving Okada the stage to celebrate as the new Ace of New Japan Pro Wrestling and IWGP Heavyweight Champion!

Glad you made things slightly different from the Actual show, tho I am surprised you had Styles beat Nakamura for the Intercontinental Title. I am glad however that Ropangi Vice won the Jr Tag titles instead of Young Bucks winning them back. Naito defeating Goto was the better booking decision as well. Looking forward to Okada vs Naito, and I am also looking forward to Kojima vs Styles.

Really well done write up. I liked how things were different and I loved some of the booking decisions. Styles with the IC Title is interesting, the Bucks didn't win and Naito won. I hope you head towards Naito/Okada, though I'd want to see Naito with the belt. Looking forward to more. Glad you kept the Shibata win intact.

New Japan Pro Wrestling New Years Dash!! January 5th 2016; Korakuen Hall
- The show kicked off with New Japan’s president, Kitani Takaaki, thanking everyone for coming tonight, for making Wrestle Kingdom X such an amazing show and wishing everyone a happy new year!
1. FINAL SHOWDOWN BEFORE EXCURSION) Yohei Komatsu (w/ Los Ingobernables) Defeated Sho Tanaka in 08:32 with the One Legged Boston Crab. Sho didn’t seem happy with Komatsu about aligning himself with Los Ingobernables and it looks like these two will carry this over to CMLL. A solid back and forth match ended with BUSHI spraying the mist in Sho’s eyes and Komatsu locking in that signature young lion boston crab for the submission win. Lots of heat on Komatsu, this will be remembered by the New Japan faithful. ***
2.) reDRagon Defeated Jay White & Dave Finlay Jr. in 07:11 with Chasing the Dragon on Jay White. With Tanaka and Komatsu heading to CMLL it’s time for White & Dave Finlay Jr. to take their spots as the top young lions. Here they put up quite the fight but just couldn’t overcome reDRagon, who declared they’re coming for their titles at the New Beginning! **1/2
3.) Jay Lethal (w/ Truth Martini) Defeated Juice Robinson in 06:43 with the Lethal Injection. A match with a lot more back and forth than people were expecting. Juice looked better in there than he has in most of his New Japan run, but the crowd just weren’t into this match at all. *1/2
4. CMLL WORLD WELTERWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH) BUSHI © (w/ Los Ingobernables) Defeated Mascara Dorada in 13:41 with MX. Dorada was trying to win back the gold here but with Los Ingobernables at ringside that seemed like an impossible task. BUSHI is no slouch anyway, he really took the fight to Dorada, and with the added insurance of some Ingobernables shenanigans there was just no way for Dorada to find the win. BUSHI retains, and Los Ingobernables success continues. ***1/2
5.) Tencozy & Great Bash Heel Defeated AJ Styles, Cody Hall, Karl Anderson & Doc Gallows in 16:42 with the Koji Cutter on Hall. A solid contest that focused heavily on building up the rematch between GBH and Anderson and Gallows. The real story came after the match when Satoshi Kojima, fresh off his Rambo victory at Wrestle Kingdom X, officially laid down a challenge for the IWGP Intercontinental Championship at the New Beginning. The rest of the Bullet Club told AJ to refuse, that Kojima wasn’t worth it, but AJ wasn’t having it and accepted the challenge to make it official! **1/2
6.) Hiroshi Tanahashi, Michael Elgin, Ricochet & Matt Sydal Defeated Shisuke Nakamura, Tomohiro Ishii & Roppongi Vice in 17:11 with the High Fly Flow on Berreta. A big, quick fire eight man tag match with plenty of action but likely not a whole lot of story implications. Both Tanahashi and Nakamura took back seats here for the other six to get the spotlight before coming in towards the end for a stand-off that really popped the fans. Tanahashi and Nakamura gave a short burst of back and forth that really reminds you why these two are such great opponents. In the end though it was Berreta taking the fall and Tanahashi taking a microphone post-match to remind the fans that he might not be the ace anymore, but he’s not going anywhere. ***1/2
7.) Tetsuya Naito & EVIL (w/ BUSHI) Defeated Kazuchika Okada & YOSHI-HASHI in 13:53 with the Destino on YOSHI-HASHI. A solid enough match with some appetite whetting Okada / Naito interactions and a BUSHI mist-assisted finish to give Los Ingobernables the clean sweep for the night. The real action happened after the bell when Naito officially challenged Okada for the belt at the New Beginning, saying it’s about time he stopped getting held down and got what he deserved. Okada reminded Naito that he’s beaten him before, at Wrestle Kingdom no less, and that he’s happy to do it again. At the New Beginning he’ll give Naito what he deserves, a beating! Naito played it off as if he didn’t care but it was clear he’s focused on becoming the IWGP Heavyweight Champion, he’s just got to go through Okada to do it. ***
8. NEVER OPENWEIGHT SIX-MAN TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH) Toru Yano & The Briscoes © Defeated Bad Luck Fale, Tama Tonga & Yujiro Takahashi in 16:32 with the Springboard Doomsday Device on Takahashi. This is what the new NEVER Six-Man Tag Team Championships should be used as, a way to make these multi-cam house shows seem like a much bigger deal. This did the job. The Briscoe’s are getting over nicely and they seemed more than happy at really getting to let loose and hit a bit harder while Yano’s comedy spots always seem to get a good reaction. In the end the result was very much the same as a bit of Yano shenanegens gave the Briscoes the chance to hit the Springboard Doomsday Device and finish Takahashi for their first defence. ***

New Japan Puro-Newswire
06/01/16: The biggest story coming out of Wrestle Kingdom X week is that World Wrestling Entertainment have reached out to four of New Japan’s biggest stars. Reportedly Shinsuke Nakamura, AJ Styles, Karl Anderson and Doc Gallows have all been offered contracts and we’re hearing that at least two of those four are very close to signing. New Japan have apparently opened talks with all four to try and keep them on board but with both AJ and Gallows working on open contracts and Nakamura and Anderson’s contracts expiring at the end of January they seem to have a mountain to climb.
What is interesting however is that all four men are featured on the cards for The New Beginning shows, so New Japan must have some agreement of keeping them at least to those dates.
10/01/16: In an update on the recent reports, World Wrestling Entertainment have also reached out to New Japan stars Rocky Romero, Bad Luck Fale and Tama Tonga. The word is that all three are also in negotiations with New Japan over new contracts and may be using the WWE offers as leverage to get better deals and a better position in the company.
13/01/16: New Japan Pro Wrestling have confirmed that former Young Lion Kamaitachi (Hiromu Takahashi) will be returning from excursion on the upcoming Road to the New Beginning tour. He will continue to go under the Kamaitachi name that he has been using in CMLL, likely due to the similarities between his birth name and that of Yujiro Takahashi’s. His first match, and the rest of the Road to the New Beginning shows, were announced this morning by New Japan and can be found on our upcoming shows page.
13/01/16: Notably those Road to the New Beginning shows feature all seven of the New Japan stars rumoured to be in talks with WWE, possibly meaning they will be staying with New Japan at least for the foreseeable future.
15/01/16: In surprising news for New Japan Pro Wrestling we can now confirm that Shinsuke Nakamura has handed in his notice and will be leaving New Japan after the New Beginning shows in February. Nakamura is a multi-time IWGP Heavyweight and IWGP Intercontinental Champion and has headlined Wrestle Kingdom in the past. He’s considered a huge fan favourite and many were expecting him to stay on with New Japan but that is now known to not be the case. No news on who his final opponent will be, but we do know it will be on one of the New Beginning shows.
17/01/16: In more bad news for New Japan fans we can confirm that both Karl Anderson and Doc Gallows will be finishing up with the company at the New Beginning shows and will then be reporting down to Florida to WWE’s performance centre. They will be finishing up with a rematch for the IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Championships against Great Bash Heel. Anderson and Gallows have been a huge part of the heavyweight tag division over the past few years and this will come as another blow for New Japan. There is still no word on the status of current IWGP Intercontinental Champion AJ Styles or Rocky Romero, Bad Luck Fale and Tama Tonga.

Very interesting start. I like some of the booking changes made to the WK results but I personally would have had Goto win here and saved Naito's shot for him possibly winning the New Japan Cup and cashing in at Dominion. Good stuff though, I look forward to it.

New Japan Puro-Newswire
19/01/16: In the first bit of good news for New Japan Pro Wrestling in the past two weeks Rocky Romero, Bad Luck Fale and Tama Tonga have all reportedly signed new contracts with the company, turning down World Wrestling Entertainment. Romero was only offered a trainer deal with WWE and didn’t want to wrap up his wrestling career just yet, while Fale and Tonga got the improved deals they were seeking almost immediately after Karl Anderson and Doc Gallows were confirmed to be leaving. The status of AJ Styles is still unknown.
21/01/16: Kenny Omega uploaded a video to his official youtube page today where he called out Shinsuke Nakamura about signing with WWE, saying that it was a travesty and that Nakamura is running because he knows his time as the top draw in New Japan is up. Omega went on to challenge Nakamura to a match at the New Beginning, saying that he wasn’t going to be junior heavyweight anymore and that he was here to be a heavyweight, and that he’d clean up the mess Nakamura was leaving.
23/01/16: Two days after Kenny Omega posted the video challenging Shinsuke Nakamura to a final match at The New Beginning the official New Japan website has confirmed that the match will be going ahead on the New Beginning in Niigata show. The updated cards for both New Beginning shows are as follows:
NJPW The New Beginning in Osaka
IWGP HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH) Kazuchika Okada © vs. Tetsuya Naito NEVER OPENWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH) Katsuyori Shibata © vs. Tomohiro Ishii Shinsuke Nakamura & Roppongi Vice vs. Kenny Omega & The Young Bucks AJ Styles, Bad Luck Fale & Tama Tonga vs. Tencozy & Manabu Nakanishi IWGP JUNIOR HEAVYWEIGHT TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH) Matt Sydal & Ricochet © vs. reDRagon

25/01/16: In surprising news AJ Styles has confirmed that he will be remaining with New Japan wrestling for as long as he is IWGP Intercontinental Champion, wanting to pay back the New Japan fans by being the best Intercontinental Champion possible before he even considers leaving elsewhere. Reportedly AJ has signed a placeholder deal with World Wrestling Entertainment but has negotiated a later leaving date than Nakamura, Anderson and Gallows as he didn’t want to leave New Japan in the lurch when they reportedly have a big angle planned for him and the Intercontinental Championship.
