So, with the recent rumors of AJ Styles signing with WWE, I've dusted off his TNA DVD's and been watching them over the past couple of weeks.
Does Don West annoy anyone else? I get that he was trying to make everything sound huge, and to an extent that's good, but to me it feels like he took it too far. In this match Im watching, he was basically screaming already within the first five minutes.
I feel like that should be saved for key moments. Maybe it's just me.

Some hated him, I loved him. He at least tried to get you invested in the product, unlike the announcers of both WWE and TNA today.

Nah, I loved West.
TNA never had a better commentary team than him and Tenay, imo.

Nah, I loved West. TNA never had a better commentary team than him and Tenay, imo. Indeed. Josh Mathews is one of the worst leading men I've ever heard. Pope screaming "DADDY!" the whole time is even worse. |

Indeed. Josh Mathews is one of the worst leading men I've ever heard. Pope screaming "DADDY!" the whole time is even worse. Just another thing contributing to TNA's utter blandness in 2016. I used to think Pope was going to be TNA's next big star due to his mic skills. Boy, was I wrong. Mic skills do not equate to commentating skills apparently. |

He wasn't perfect, but I thought he did a good job. I'm guessing age. I know some people were sick of him, too. People thought Tenay & Tazz were bad, but compared to this, they were above-average. |

Don West and Mike Tenay were the voice of TNA when they left it was all down hill.

TNA needed someone like Don West during those years alongside Tenay (who I feel is best as a historian/fact-giver) to give a different feel; having two babyface play-by-play commentators with different tempos to their delivery was very cool...but by 2009 it had run its course, which I guess TNA realised as well, making West turn heel and then manage Amazing Red.
His background in hyping products translated well at the time, and overall, I didn't mind him...

He was ing incredible and probably one of the most underrated commentators. The guy was so invested into the product and it showed on air. Him and Tenay are one of my favorite teams. |

KEN GRIFFEY JR ROOKIE CARD!!!!!!! Ha ha ha ha ha!!! I used to love watching him hype up baseball cards late night on TV. "And if you call now, not only will you get Ken Griffey Jr's rookie card, but we will also throw in.... FRANK THOMAS UPPERDECK 91 FOR FREE!!!" But to the point of West being on commentary, I remember Jeff Jarrett said he wanted a colour commentator who was seen as a fan. Who reacted as fans would react. Instead of just calling the match with Tenay, he actually showed excitement for things because he didn't know what was coming. |

I was a big fan of Don West as a commentator and loved his enthusiasm, something that is severely lacking with todays announcers like Michael Cole, Josh Matthews, Byron Saxton, etc. He also did a great job with ShopTNA and could sell ice to an eskimo. It looks like the quality of products and customer service has went down since he left.

Back when the weekly ppv still happened I would keep track of how many different silk shirts he had. 5 total Maybe. Lol.
I met him at a house show once. He gave me two free dvds because we were talking about the pope.

at times his yelling was a bit overdone, but he at least was energized and focused on the event and matches happening. something tna needed at that time. they shouldn't have got rid of him.
