Saturday Night's main event voting will be going by popular vote. I have a couple of judges who aren't feeling up to it, and I screwed up by not letting everybody know in advance. Sorry for the mixup, I'll get judging in order before the PPV.
Match 1: Tibbs
Kenny. The head, as many have said, kills this. It's kind of frightening. And I think it's because of how dark the mouth is. I like that you decided to give it some definition, because that is easily lost with a skintone, but the definition is to dark. Try just mixing a little pink with your skintone and using that for the lip definition. And I might catch heat from some people for this.. but maybe not paint the skintone. The hair also seems to lack a bit of texture, which I kind of get with Sabin's weird bowl cut thing he has going now, but it needs some. I would've liked a smaller torso for him.. I think this torso is too big, even with the attempt at making him less muscular, which was a good call.
Tibbs. I really like this custom. It's funny, creative, good attention to detail. The fanny pack and Ed Hardy shirt are genius! I don't know that it needed to be sculpted, though. I like the idea, and I give you props for trying it, but the biggest issues I have come from the over sculpting. The joint where the shorts meet the legs is odd. I feel like the legs meld into the shorts too much. The cargo shorts look good, but the front of them needs more detail.. where's the zipper?? Also, the band for the fanny pack looks a little rushed and not cleaned up -- it doesn't quite meet the pack itself perfectly. But the painting looks pretty good, the skintone is nice, though maybe a bit light for the well-done Hulkster. And the sculpting is reasonably smooth. Nice job.
nydream. I really do think you just keep getting better and better. The biggest problem with this custom is cleaning up your lines. It's hard, and it's certainly tedious, but you gotta do it. Go slowly over the edges of your lines with the surrounding color for a smooth edge. It will make a ton of difference. The skintone looks nice. One odd thing is it seems in some places that the black is shiny and in some it is matte. I don't know if you aren't sealing it uniformly, but you should check that out.
Match 2: JPD
jpd. Close match. I like the way this turned out a lot. Using the entire Umaga figure worked out really well for you, but I don't think the head still looks like Umaga, which is great. The skintone is really good, and the hair and tongue look great. My one suggestion is that the logos on the sides really could've used another coat of paint to make them pop out more.
texacide. I like this figure a lot and the painting is (as always) superbly smooth. I don't think you painted the skintone (if you did.. nice Jakks color), which I am all in favor of not doing when it's not necessary. Where I don't like it is the head, which I feel should be fatter. The expression is good, but the shape is not right, which is really an issue for the custom.
Match 3: Riot Squad
Stunner. I am going to set aside the fact that I hate the look of these figures in general for this. My biggest problem with this figure is how skinny he is, and how the head seems to fit awkwardly on the body.. like it's a little small, or perched on the neck. Other than that, the painting and likeness is great. I'd really like to see the one that broke, because you pulled out a good figure quickly.
Import. Nice effort with the sculpting. It's ultra smooth, which I've really come to expect from you. The head looks great, and I REALLY like the tattoo work, great faded color. Here are my problems: The sculpting of the joints where the arms meet the torso looks a little.. webbed. Like especially the left one.. it looks like the arm comes from mid-torso. I've never done a posed custom, so I don't know the logistics, but I'd suggest tightening up the arm joints net time.
wwe4ever. I like the painting of AMW and the skintone. The torso sculpt lacks a bit of definition and the back looks oddly rough. It was a nice effort to sculpt the pads, and add wrinkles, but this type of sculpting will render the figure not playable. If you're sculpting over the joints, you might as well sculpt the whole thing. A couple things seem to be off center, like the Wildcat logo and the mustache. The proportion of the mustache makes me wonder where his mouth is. This isn't so bad of a custom, just not the quality necessary for tag titles.
deen. I really think you nailed the head on this. Really smooth skintone, LOVE the torso choice. It doesn't look like the elbow pads are playable but you made an effort to make the knee pads playable.. I can't tell if they actually work, but it's good effort at least. Nice texture on them as well. The logo on the tights is really nice. Great custom. You've come so far, nice work.
