Not really. Cena is a clean cut, all american boy. Basically he's Captain America. Someone that parents wouldn't mind their kids to look u to. Stone Cold sold huge merch, sure. But it was a different time, a different product. One that was geared towards teenagers and adults. The current product is still geared towards children, or families. So while guys like Ambrose are popular, he's rough around the edges, and crazy. He's never going to tap into the child market in the same way Cena does, and I honestly don't think Roman will either. The kind of crowd that Ambrose, or a Ziggler, or a Kevin Owens appeals to aren't as willing to spend their money on the merchandise and buy tickets to see them compete as Cena's are. It's as plain as day, otherwise the numbers would be different. Cena has been out of the main event scene now for a good 2 years, he's still shifting more merch than anyone else. Ambrose is Deadpool, Cena is Captain America. What we need is Iron Man... because Tony Stark would be really entertaining on the mic.... They could recycle Ted DiBiase's theme for him.

CM Punk was moving some serious merchandise during his time and I remember reading that he passed Cena for a little while, which is probably why he had the heel turn and didn't get to main event much. Reigns just isn't gonna be that guy, but we are probably a long way from them giving up on forcing the issue.

This is entirely on WWE for not creating more stars in the YEARS they've had to do so.
Roman Reigns can still be the guy. Just stop forcing him down peoples' throats and get competent creators on the team.
Ambrose, Styles, Rollins, Kalisto, Balor, Wyatt, Owens -- etc, etc, etc...They could all be top sellers across the board, with appeal from top to bottom. But WWE has made it a habit to put their stock in 1-3 guys, and leave it at that.
But when you don't have Cena, or Orton, and nobody gives a sh*t about Sheamus, what can you do?
They're now having to scramble to make a star out of someone, because their foresight was awful, to say the least. And Reigns suffers from this lack of foresight by WWE. He doesn't benefit.
WWE has the best talent in the world working for it. The best performers, bar none. But their writers are sh*t. The shot callers are sh*t, and nobody seems to care beyond the stock performance that have any say within the company. Yes, this is a business. But it's an entertainment business. Lethargy is the enemy of enticement. When you stop putting out a product for people to give a damn about, people stop giving a damn. They'll find their entertainment elsewhere.
Why is Lucha Underground better, in every way, than WWE right now? Because the entertainment value is there. The creativity is there. The people involved give a damn about the product they're putting out. WWE has no competition, because they bought out their #1 competitor, or because their competition is run by blithering idiots. Not because they're a better product. And someone will try to say "better" is a subjective term. When it comes to entertainment value? Sure. When it comes to quality? No. There is good, and there is bad. WWE's product is bad right now. And that's even more painful considering the roster they have to work with.

Well maybe if the colors of Cena's shirts didn't get brighter and uglier each time, sales would stay consistent. Orange and forest green? Really?

The current WWE roster is the best they've ever had. They shouldn't be struggling.

If Reigns doesn't connect with the kiddies, he can't be the Cena. I'm sure when Cena returns his merch will fly. On the other hand, I don't know about the kiddies, but I'm 18-34, I'd buy an Ambrose shirt, I damn sure wouldn't buy any Reigns crap. They do have merch options; Bryan being one of the biggest. I know the arguments for and against bringing him back, but if he's at least on tv he will give the merch sales a boost. The 'Yes' stuff is something pretty much everyone will buy. I can't say that putting Ambrose in Reigns spot will just suddenly make all merch sales fly, but I am sure he'll beat Reigns.
So lets just have Ambrose take Fastlane and meet HHH at Wrestlemania just to be sure.

We're fed up of seeing the Hogan type booking Hogan Cena and now Reigns have all gotten the same type of push they're booked TOO strong, you know they're going to win there's no challenge. That way of booking only works for Lesnar because he's a rarity on our screens when he shows up on u know crap going down and the show is worth watching.
There was a point where Ambrose wad coming close or beating Cena I think. I reckon Ambrose should get the shock win at Fast lane.

His lower merch sales are obviously mainly due to the fact his been out for a number of months recently. I'm sure his merch sales will kickout at 2 when he returns. Lol I love this post

I'm a Reigns fan but I think he would be better as a heel.

It's their own fault in so many ways. Ambrose or Rollins upon return could be and should be Huge! Does WWE realize that Ambrose is way more over than Reigns will probably ever be? Obviously not. WWE should not make the mistake of having Reigns winning in the Main Event of Wrestlemania, Imagine the pop Ambrose would get if he defeated Triple H at Mania to be the World Champion.....

This might not be a problem, if...you know...the WWE built other credible stars. I think their best hope is a babyface Seth Rollins to be honest.

meh, slow news day Cena's been on and off WWE TV for 6 months, and now he's out longer. kids arent going to shows to see Cena and begging their parents for a $30 t-shirt.
when Cena is back full time his merch will start flying again.
problem is the WWE has the stars to be able to fill the void, but they aren't properly using anybody besides what they think they should be doing with Reigns.

I thought so, couldn't quite remember. Roman should join The Authority, he could be world champion with them behind him doing his talking, ring wise he's fine, just the microphone work blows. I'd have Dean win at Fastlane with an interference from Bray taking out Lesnar Dean pins Lesnar, Roman is outside afetr going through the announce table/ Lesnar vs Wyatt at Wrestlemania AJ vs Roman AJ needs to prove himself against the last world champion. Reigns looses. Gets a bit pissy after the match and wont shake AJ's hand. Dean vs Triple H, Reigns comes out and helps Triple H. Somehow Dean manages to pick up the win. RAW - Triple H invokes his re-match clause at Extreme Rules, but puts Roman in his place.

He's old, and old people HATE change. He grew up in the age of 80's super hero wrestlers, and a lot of mid to late 90s soap operas (when kayfabe was alive) He refuses to believe that people don't want that anymore, he refuses to believe that kayfabe is dead, and he REFUSES to take no for an answer. Vince would rather be forcefully castrated than allow Reigns to take a backseat to more talented stars.

While I don't necessarily put much stock in this report, I absolutely think there is something to the fact that they've had sales almost constantly on WWE Shop. I've bought more shirts from them than I ever have in the past, because they can be had for good prices way more frequently than they used to.
Hell, I used to look forward to going to live events so I could grab a shirt without paying shipping. Now I never buy them at shows because I can get them cheaper with their sales online.
I'm sure a decline in Cena sales is related to his time off of TV to some extent, and also because, you know, the only star they care about building isn't a star at all.
CM Punk predicted all of this stuff, and people scoffed at him, but he was right about virtually all of it.

BULLSHIT. He's been hurt most of the year. Of course his numbers would be down.
