*since I was a big fan.
Hi WF,
Happy Mania Season.
So I only really check out the goings on of WWE around Wrestlemania time these days, mainly to see if my guy The Undertaker is still carding the big event. I usually end up sticking around in the news for a few days after before I tire of it all.
One thing I noticed when watching recent clips is how much I dislike Michael Cole. A man who was shown great loyalty and passion to WWE over many years, some would probably agree that he is a staple in the announce team of any show. Others may be more sensible and realise he's annoying as f. Although its hard to disagree that he creates a lot of 'theatre' in his dramatic callings of stunts, spots, big moments... I feel it's time he was relegated to the back! (I sometimes just have to mute the volume).
What does everyone think of Michael Cole? Is he too legendary to remove - has he earned his stripes? or is he not as good on the headset as WWE can get?
What is the general opinion of the newest guy at the table? I've never heard of him before but he seems like a good commentator. Byron?
Does WWE miss Jim Ross? Do you miss Jim Ross? and what is your PREFERRED arrangement?
Lets get a meaty thread going on this subject as I'm interested to know the fans view!

Bryon is pretty bland, half the time I forget he is there. I like the team of Micheal Cole and Jerry Lawler.

Cole is the second worst, only jbl is worse. Both need to go as far as i am concerned
While i do miss good old jr, wwe needs to work on building new one
Graves and the other guy who did takeover were pretty good

Michael Cole is actually a great commentator. He's proven that time and time again. Unfortunately he's become one of the biggest casualties of the backstage crew have no idea what the they're doing. He's fed his lines. It's completely not his fault that the commentators have been giving lousy performances for years. Saxton on the other hand is horrendous and needs to go ASAP. As good as JR was at calling matches, his clear bias kind of ruins him for me. Heel or face, he would only sell for people he liked in real life. Best commentary team: Monsoon and Heenan. Followed by Monsoon and Ventura (Heenan/McMahon and Lawler/Ross were also great together).

What does everyone think of Michael Cole? Is he too legendary to remove - has he earned his stripes? or is he not as good on the headset as WWE can get? I've never liked Cole's commentary. I appreciate what he does as a company man, but as 'the voice of WWE', I couldn't care less about him. As a matter of fact, I mute him as much as possible. What is the general opinion of the newest guy at the table? I've never heard of him before but he seems like a good commentator. Byron? He seems to be the guy stating really obvious stuff and his patter is quite cringeworthy...again, a mute button situation where possible. Does WWE miss Jim Ross? Do you miss Jim Ross? and what is your PREFERRED arrangement? WWE's mistreatment of JR over the years has soured me on the thought of ever seeing him in a WWE commentary situation again. I don't miss JR, but I consider him as one of the greats. I don't have a preferred arrangement truth be told; I either listen to Japanese commentary or none at all. Thank you. Hi there. My answers are after your questions. Cheers.

Ehh...I only really dislike JBL. At least Cole tries when he feels like it. JBL is just on loop of "HIGHLIGHT!" And some kind of insult to Byron.
Didn't JR ask to not be told what was going to happen so he could call shows in suspense and surprise? Like, he had a basic script outline of what matches were happening and the shoutouts to commercial sponsors he had to do throughout the show and that was it? I wish they would do that. Let them be as much fans as they are workers so it comes across as realistic.
Like Mania, beyond the "holy crap" reaction Cole, JBL and Byron gave at Shane jumping (they knew he would but still it's a holy crap moment that he did it anyways) there are ringside pictures of Cole reading from his script about what to say after the initial OMG happened. Stupid to me.

My preferred team is Corey Graves and Tom Phillips.

Vince is to blame. Vince is to blame. Vince is to blame.
It's him shouting in the ears of Cole and JBL that ruins them.
Even Byron, during last year's post-WM RAW, suffered when he was the one being directed (I really like Byron otherwise).
Just watch Cole during the 'Beast in the East' Japan special. Watch JBL's stuff from his past commentary runs. Byron's stuff in NXT.
Hell, look at how much better Lawler has gotten since moving to SD, how much better Byron is there. How much more awesome Ranallo, Tom Phillips & Corey Graves all are because they get their direction from HHH and not VKM.
It's all Vince.

I was very anti-Cole up until the Beast in the East event. Seeing him with a bit more freedom really made me rethink my thoughts on the commentary team. Now part of it comes down to the delivery, I don't think Michael Cole can sell those OMG moments like JR could, even ignoring the lines the emotion that comes through JR's voice sounds so much more genuine. But I think if the commentary team was given more space to breathe it wouldn't be as bad. When you think about it doing that job would be rough - having to call shows in real time with heavy directions and full lines coming through the earpiece at the same time. But yeah, the best commentary right now is on Smackdown with Ranallo. He knows how to make a match matter.

I was a big fan of Regal doing commentary in NXT. The ending to the Paige vs Emma match where he knew the technical name to the PTO is brilliant with how excited he gets. Can't remember the name myself.

I'd get rid of the three man teams, doesn't work. If they do a brand split I'd re-do the announce teams. RAW, Mauro and I wanna say Zeb, I feel Mauro's passion and Zeb's history with the business they could be good, plus I wanna see Zeb on TV again. SmackDown I'd have Byron and maybe Rich Brennan. He was doing ok on SmackDown last year and hasn't done much since.

i think that one dude with the glasses for nxt has the best voice in wrestling commentary today.
jbl has his moments, but the others can go.

I just hate that they don't let Cole call moves and actually call the action and put over the talent and the moves to help build the match. That's why I like Ranallo so much.

1) I used to like Michael Cole as a backstage interviewer, and as an announcer on Sunday Night Heat. Unfortunately, through no fault of his own, he has been thrusted in the role of corporate shill. He is the Tony Schiavone of WWE, and that's not a bad thing. It's just his role. Know who's bad? Josh Matthews, but he's TNA's problem.
2) I think I read it somewhere on this board (or maybe FB) that an announcer's job is to make it so that a blind man can understand the action happening in the ring. Now, I would take that to mean that there's an assumption that a blind man had at one point seen Neville's Red Arrow or Zack Ryder's Rough Ryder or AJ Style's Style Clash etc. etc., and assuming that to be the case, I can safely say nope. Not happening here. I once listened to an entire match while cleaning my room, and didn't even know someone won until his music played. It wasn't until I checked online that I found out the match ended by DQ or something (Memory is fuzzy). Again, part of the problem is there constant shilling of WWE Apps, Trends, and other nonsense.
3) Mauro has found a good blend of being able to commentate and shill. Might be because he adds a breath of fresh air to the product since he's new, but I really enjoy his commentary and his voice. Reminds me a little of Scott Hudson from WCW, who I thought was underrated.
4) Maggle.
5) I often thought it would be cool to watch an entire episode of Raw or Smackdown and go on Periscope and do play by play. However, I fear doing that because it's a hard job. The announcers are lucky that they have notes and are fed lines at certain points. Sometimes the action is so frantic that to call the match move for move would be a tongue twister as you search for different ways to say chinlock and punches in a way that makes it dramatic. They have a hard job, so I try to cut them some slack. (Side note: I think I will try to do a Periscope play by play one night. Just to see if I'm correct with that tongue twister comment. Might be hilarious in the same sense that watching a cat fall down a flight of stairs is hilarious (see Simpsons, Homer Jay when he was taking Polaroids of himself showing sadness until the cat fell down the stairs and he took a Polaroid of himself showing laughter).

Cole is awful, and has been for a few years. My favorites are Mauro, Graves, Regal (when he commentated), Philips, Brennan, and Byron.

I think JR, King (heel) and Mauro would be a cool team.

The current Raw/PPV announce team is the worst WWE has ever had IMO. All 3 of them are just awful at what they are doing, and it takes away from the product. I don't care for Bryon much but he works better with King & MR on Smackdown than he does on RAW. I wish the SD team was the RAW/PPV team.
I do miss JR, but I have to live with that because I know he will never be a full time announcer in WWE again.

I really like the new guy from MMA and I loathe the King; he's a disgusting, dirty old man who's time is long over.
I think the rest would be fine if they were told before the show things they need to emphasize and push and then were left alone. I've heard that people actually talk in their ear while they're trying to announce the show.

They're all good, but Vince is what is holding them back.
My favorite commentator EVER is Joey Styles. That man can call a match like no other. I'd love to see him on RAW.
