If downloading music becomes illegal, then they would have to stop selling CD Burners. And it still wouldn't stop. slick signing off...

First of all downloading mp3s in Canada is perfectly legal. Uploading isn't. And I believe Heidencrap is right. I have heard nothing on the subject nor have any of my friends or my brother (who has actually researched all laws involved in the downloading of mp3s issue).
As for the comment from »Šlick«. Heidencrap is right there as well. CD and DVD burners have many uses other than for downloading mp3s. Backing up files, burning your home movies into a format that can be played on some DVD players, hard drive ghosting. Or on any computer that has TV in and TV recording capabilities, you can record a TV show and burn it to a CD or DVD and it fall into the same laws that deal with VHS.
Now as for whether we will eventually lose the legal ability to download mp3s. We pay for the legal right to burn mp3s, back up our music CDs. Every time you buy an audio cassette tape (if you can even find a store that carries those now), CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW you pay a hidden tax (a copyright tax). That tax is supposed to go to the Canadian music industry (wouldn't suprise me if the goverment takes a cut of that tax for themselves). The moment it becomes illegal to download mp3s, then that tax serves no purpose and should be be removed. And since when has the government passed on an opportunity to take more money from us?

And who buys CD burners anymore other than to replace a dead drive. They are pretty much standard on new systems anymore. Like I stated in my previous post, CD and DVD burners do have alot of legal uses (and since burning mp3s to CD for your own personal use is legal in Canada it falls under legal uses as well). Now heres a tip for anyone who is running Win XP and has reformatted too many times or has made more than the "allowed hardware upgrades". Buy yourself a DVD burner for your system and a program called Norton Ghost. Do a barebones setup of your system installing just Win XP and the necessary Windows Updates. Then use Ghost to make a ghosting image of your hard drive. Burn that image to a DVD. This way next time you need to reformat for whatever reason, just run Ghost and use the DVDs ghost image. It "resets" your system back to just the drivers (some guys I know do a seperate ghosting session so they have a copy that has all their programs preinstalled next time they have to reformat their system)

Lots of people buy CD burners to back up files. I'm a flash animator and I use one to back up my files plus I use it to make back ups of my CD collection, which is legal no matter where you're located.

Actually CD Burners can be very useful in order to keep your files incase of a memory loss, As for the downloading music, I'm not quite sure whats happening, until I hear it on the news I'll still Download

Even if they do make it illegal, its hard to stop it. Too many people have the ability and know-how to do it and keep it going.
I feel it's a lost cause.
I personally don't download music. Only wrestling matches.
Fight The Power. Support Indy Wrestling. Download the 'E'

Wow, something I knew along time ago. Basically the politicians are finally putting into words the one question that nobody would give an official answer on. This has been the way the copyright laws have pretty much been since the whole mp3 issue reared it head. We have always had the right to download mp3s but it was illegal to share them (which they are now finally stating).
Robby Wreckless, you are kind of right and wrong. All thats illegal is the sharing (uploading) of files. As long as you only download and not share your files, they aren't doing jack (and probably because that in itself would be too hard to monitor). All we have to do is let the people in countries not bound by these laws upload the files to us. Yes people have the know-how to get around it, but its so much easier to let other countries host the files, or even use IP spoofing to look like your computer is using an ISP overseas (one of my favs back when I was into playing with IRC "war" apps).
